My initial ranking for Lux Æterna (with a score of 16) is 44/116. It’s right below Dyers Eve, and just above Fight Fire with Fire (both also have 16 points, but my old ranking system is weighted toward composition). Composition - it’s fun, but the structure is Verse-Chorus-Verse-Chorus-Solo-Verse-Chorus, just like every other song. There are really only a couple riffs, so it’s standard Metallica. It’s a 2. Memorability - It was stuck in my head RIGHT AWAY, and the chorus is just too easy to sing. The references to past albums and influences draws out the nostalgia, and it’s been in my head for the last 24 hours since I heard it. That’s a 4. Emotional Response: Watch my reaction again. 4. I love it. Instrumentation: Would have been higher, but Kirk’s solo is kinda lazy, and the outro didn’t need a tag on the end. That’s a 3. Lyrics: Not as deep as Load/Reload, and the -tion rhymes are a bit overdone by now, but I dig the message and enjoy how it feels to sing, so it’s a 3.
I agree with your ranking. I really like their new song too (except for Kirk’s solo, which I hate, except for the first bit). And I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed seeing your reaction! You were like a kid at Christmas. 😂
Nice react Hey dude, You must be check it out VOB (Voice of Baceprot) They's metal girl band from Indonesia And they's ever perform in 5 country of Europe They's have ENTER SANDMAN COVER
Thanking for the ranking. I figured you'd say something about not going back to the main riff between the 1-&-&-& hits, and the third verse -- instead, just going directly to the third verse.
This song is about bringing the fans from the old generation and the new generation together. Uniting as one. The smile you had throughout the video shows they set out what they wanted to do to their listeners.
Do not. Do not retire the Metallica ranking list. Once the full album is released you have to do a full ranking and see where these new songs land. You can't leave out the newest album.!!!!!!
@@MidnightNotionMine was Death Magnetic, and it was a landmark moment in my life. It was about a year after I started really getting into music , and they were my favorite band. It was amazing getting into the band just as they rediscovered themselves. A magical time.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m Bryce of Midnight Notion, singer, songwriter, musician, and a *big* fan of Metallica, but I have no idea what my favorite Metallica song is. Could it be Lux Aeterna? Let’s…just Rocker Review it this time.
James mentioned in an interview that it was just a fun song, an easy to song to write, and yeah kind of a throwback to Kill 'Em All...I'm really stoked to hear the next singles! (Hard to tell in the video, but I'm pretty sure that's the old flying V James used from Kill 'Em All and Ride the Lightning days...He still uses it when recording!)
That's what I got from the message of the song. It's a love song to the fans, a battle cry. This will 100% be kicking off the opening night of each of the night 1 shows of the no repeat tour.
The entire song sounds like a love letter to Kill 'Em All. Musically: The main riff sounds like a discarded idea from "Hit the Lights". It's so Diamond Head-y that I expect Baby James to travel forward in time and sue Papa Het for that riff. G5 (third measure of verse) is a chord they almost always play as a transition/passing chord, rather than the anchor chord as it is here. "Jump in the Fire" is in G minor (not that they play it as written anymore). The solo modulating to Bb could also be a callback to the solo of "Jump in the Fire", as the backing riff switches from Bb5 to G5. That middle riff is "stolen" from Hit the Lights -- Baby James will have two riffs to sue over. As you pointed out, this song goes from A, to E during the solo (to Bb), then back to A, like "Seek and Destroy" does. The song also makes use of open-string octaves (the landing notes of the main riff) and double-stops, aka reverse power chords, which were a hallmark of Kill Em All specifically, as they moved away from them on later albums. The fake-out ending coming back in with double bass is right out of "Overkill" by Motörhead -- in the Kill 'Em All days, Metallica described themselves as a cross between Motörhead and Diamond Head. Lyrically: The subject matter is very similar to "Hit the Lights" and "Whiplash" -- "Lux Æterna" means "eternal light"; essentially, "Hit the Lights Forever". The phrase "Full speed or nothing" is directly out of "Motorbreath" - "Don't stop for nothing; it's full speed or nothing!" "Frenzied sensation" might be a callback to the lyric from "Whiplash", "In your frenzied madness with your leather and your spikes". "Lightning the nation" may be a nod to the Diamond Head album Lightning to the Nations, Diamond Head being one of early Metallica's primary influences, especially for James. Basically, they're saying "We will never stop, we will never quit, 'cause YOU'RE Metallica!" I doubt it's related to the 2019 French film of the same name. 🤣
I really like this one! It's got that fun vibe to it. It feels way more focused than Hardwired for sure! Also there's a part that's soo Iron Maiden. Around 4:52 with the Guitar and Snare
Also I'm thinking this album has songs that sound like each album on purpose. Seems like an ode to every album they have ever produced. Hence the first one we hear is a kill em all vibe. Just a thought
I really, really don’t like the James writing trope of rhyming -tion words, but, musically, this song is so fun. James’ voice sounds as good as it ever has, Lars’ drumming is appropriate and tight, Kirk’s soloing is greatly improved from Hardwired, the production is much more audibly pleasing than their previous album as well. I’m really excited for this album!
Sounds really good friend GD reaction to it the 6song off the album so it could be intense album or 77 minutes of everything else done in life for them
This was the best of the four singles, with 72 Seasons close second. The old-school, thrashy main riff, constant double kick, and James's singing were on point. It's a bit like another favourite, Hit The Lights, but for a new generation, through fresh eyes, and an ode to the ever-growing Metallica community. Stand up to your demons, and keep that spark of youth burning. Hot Take: I personally believe the album should have been called Lux Æterna. I appreciate how Lars is simply keeping the beat, and does not overdo his fills, like on You Must Burn. The final "light it" at the end was really cool. However, Kirk's solo was really underwhelming. It sounded like he got his fingers tangled in the strings halfway through. It started off promising, before dissolving into whammy bar noises. Minor Rant: I think that Metallica should really chill with the "-tion" words. It sounds like the band ran out of lyrics, and it got old really quickly. Otherwise, strong evidence that Lars can still double-kick. 18/20
I'm curious about the time signatures, too! I thought it was just my bad sense of timing, but you're probably right that something a little quirky is happening.
It’s definitely in 4/4. That off-beat landing that feels like the A of 4 is actually the A of 1. It’s unnatural to accent that beat, but it’s the same kind of backwards riff as BBS, Ain’t My Bitch, and Ride the Lightning.

I just hope the rest of the album doesn't sound "beneath" this track , I doubt so. I hope there are a few neck bracing songs on the album, and maybe something a little bit different too. There'll probably be a couple of tracks that embrace the Nothing Else Matters kinda vibe, but surely there must be some balls out hard stuff too. Can't wait for the album.
Agreed! Someone else mentioned something about referencing all their previous works, and I’d actually love that. Some ridiculous thrash metal with quirky time signature changes intermixed with ballads like Fade and Sanitarium and Unforgiven III, then some grungy southern rock like Load/Reload and some disgusting Nu Metal like St. Anger. I don’t know why, but that concept is exactly what I’d like.
@Midnight Notion: You're counting it at half speed. Its about 264 bpm. The first four notes are eighth notes, so that accent note (the octave A) lands on the & of 2.
Music theory is goofy - we can all accomplish the same thing in different ways, and at the end of the day, it doesn’t make much of a difference as long as the musicians can play it together. I see it as a drummer: there are half-time grooves where the snare accent is on the 3, straight grooves where the snares are on 2 and 4, and punk/thrash beats where the snares are on the & of every beat. This song is that last one. If I were to write it out on paper, I’d have four snares per measure, where you’d have only two, and I think that’s twice as many measures than necessary. Filling the song up with 16th notes might look messy, but I think it conveys how fast the song is, and that’s why I count it this way. 😊
