    What was most interesting about Wolf Hall is that (for better or for worse) it gives a very different perspective on the same historical figures that we've become so familiar with.
    However, Henry VIII is still a rotter.

    • @ThatFlower12
      @ThatFlower12 4 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      Priyesh Soni well clearly no one knows him personally but someone who murders two of his 6 wifes can be actually called a rotter. He wasn’t a pleasent person and you don’t need to know him to know that

    • @camhamster3891
      @camhamster3891 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      @Priyesh Soni The head injury isn't proven or likely to have changed Henry's personality, as the sort of behavior that happened after, also happened before. Claire Ridgway has an interesting video on the subject, examining contemporary accounts of the incident.
      In short, Henry was a rotter.
      The "morals of today" argument is dubious too. There were many well behaved and gentle people back then too, even among the monarchs.
      I suggest you take your own advice.

      Brandy H sources that were there said he did. However, it is also stated that those sources just hated Anne and wanted to show that she was the only one who was very happy; those sources might have wanted to show Henry in a more sentimental way, so we will never know if Henry did cry over the last letter. However, it is certain that days after Catherine died, Anne grew worried because she knew that Henry could do with her as he did to Catherine, and he wouldn't have the pressure to return to his first wife. Anne realised with Catherine dead her position was more precarious than when Catherine was alive because with Catherine dead Henry can do what he want, like getting rid of Anne.

    Luckily for elizabeth resembled her father, that is what "saves" her later on. The reformation of the church in England did not really start until Edward. The differences between the churches under Henry were minor. In public, Henry and Anne celebrated Catherine's death but in private, he mourned her. Poor Anne refers to the fact that she pushed Henry to cast aside catherine and she only gave him a daughter as well. 1536 is the year of the three queens as Catherine dies in January, Anne in May and Henry marries Jane Seymour.

    Henry VIII was a tyrant , but he was a popular tyrant. Believe it or not. Everyone was scared of returning to the carnage of the civil wars, and the only way this could clearly be avoided would be if Henry had a son. That’s why Henry made great use of Parliament , because it gave him the ability to show that the Commons were on side , through out the reign, obviously Some of this was done through coercion. People had felt much more confident rebelling against Richard III after his son had died. It’s much to great an undertaking to bring down a dynasty of male family members... It takes just one knockout blow to destroy a king without an heir.

    I find it adorable that Henry would carry Elizabeth when she was still a princess. I, however, recalled he hated Elizabeth the most not only because she was a girl, but Anne Boleyn's daughter. So he kept his distance and neglected her all her years.
    Despite this Elizabeth wanted to please her father and wanted his devotion and love like he did with Edward.

But if he never gets to play RIII, he could play RIII's father, Richard, Duke of York - if someone ever makes a movie or TV series that covers the early part of the Wars of the Roses as well. Wont be long now before Anne turns into a six fingered witch and falls dramatically out of favour.
    Unfortunately for her, thanks to this series, I have no sympathy for her.

      Ali CG Well this series is not that accurate. Many people knew Anne was innocent. Much of the negative propaganda was out about by her enemies. Some didn't like Jane Seymour either, and some didn't even like Katherine of Aragon. But only Anne Boleyn's grave has red roses put on it every year on the anniversary of her death and have been for over 50 years. Don't take a cheaply made inaccurate TV series as gospel.

      Juanita Richards yup~ as a woman I have immense respect and admiration for her. there's a certain sense that anne was a woman who was born before her time - she had too much independence of thought and personality for that time period. despite her short tenure as queen, she pushed for immense reformation within England and was instrumental in bringing visibility to the alternative, protestant approach towards religious worship.

      Cecilia L Tai Yes, and she was ,more of an intellectual than the king. She showed him up and he couldn't bear it. He made sure none of the others had that intellectual capacity, except for Katherine Parr who became a famous author pf religious books, even arguing with the king over his reversing the reformation, and nearly was arrested for it. Henry taught her an almighty lesson. He was a puffed up egotistical bigot who thought he was the last word and authority on every subject under the sun.

      +Juanita Richards Well, considering England, he was the last word and authority by the right of men and god at this time.

      It's worth noting that Henry was considered a formidable intellectual, certainly a heavyweight in comparison to Francis I across the Channel, with whom he was often compared. He had been brought up in the expectation that he would eventually become the Archbishop of Canterbury. He was very thoroughly educated, engaged in scholarly discourse with some of the leading intellectuals of the time, including his friend Thomas More, and Erasmus, and wrote a number of influential pamphlets on various topics.
      Anne was clearly intelligent, and strong willed. She achieved a remarkable thing, transcending the boundaries of her social status and gender far beyond what would have been thought possible, using the few tools at her disposal as a woman from a gentry family. But it's unlikely that she was 'more of an intellectual' than Henry, because she simply wouldn't have had access to the sort of education necessary to match his grasp of law, Latin and Greek, theology, literature, history etc.

    I can believe he killed my great grandmother through 15 times who is Anne Boleyn and I have her necklace so Elizabeth is my cousin through 15 times I have the b necklace and I wear it all the time

      Lily Elliker it’s impossible for you to be a direct descendent of Anne Boleyn. She only had one daughter Queen Elizabeth Tudor. Elizabeth was famously the virgin queen and had no children so Anne’s posterity ended with Elizabeth.
      Perhaps you are related to Anne by being a descendent of one of her siblings, but like I said it’s impossible to be Anne descendant.
