I dont think everyday people realize the level of technical skill and knowledge it takes to build and envision this. Im in awe and I've been a woodworker my entire life, and I'm sure many other's on here are as well and It can't be said enough how incredible this man is.

My first boss, a carpenter of North Kohala, even when I was just new to his shop, showed such wonders as sighting in a job site with his naked eye using the horizon and a ' sighting stick! Always perfect level and better than a transit of other skills. I was only starting at his own company and wished I could have worked for him longer and learned more. Such a master, in a time of rush , rush, he always took the time to care and do the work if a skilled man. Many man could only wish to work as well. Just as this master we watch now, Grand Pa's a gem!
Wow! I am a retired Mechanical Engineer and this is such a wake up call, to use our natural abilities. He makes it look so easy but in reality this man possesses an awesome talent with wood and basic hand tools. A delight to watch you sir.

I have worked with power tools most of my life, recently I have been doing small projects using only hand tools and it is very rewarding. Another awesome video and keep up the amazing work.

I grew up on a farm using Roy Underhill’s philosophy of woodworking and the necessity of thrift.

I really appreciate the close up of how the tools are used to make mortars and tendons. I want to build a table for a new telescope but I didn't want to just screw the legs together. This helps me understand how the tools should be used.

Woodworkings for decades, Grandpa gets his own annual ring on the thumb.
To construct something like this using only simple hand tools requires a level of skill you do not see much of today. You need more than knowledge of the tools and the techniques, you also need to know how wood works and behaves to make sure those tools and techniques will produce the desired result. I would hope to have even a third of this mans skill and knowledge.

I guess in his life you had to make do with what you had at the time and developed extraordinary skills out of necessity. Imagine him let loose in a fully equipped workshop.
I would be thrilled if I can reach 1/4 of his craftsmanship in my lifetime. It's my hobby this is or was his livelihood. Excellent!

That’s hysterical ! I feel the same way when I watch some of these old masters. Another channel that will make you want to stop wood working is Stinnets Sticks.
Know how you feel after watching this old guy I just shake my head, let him loose in a fully equipped workshop God knows what he'd build (probably a 500 floor skyscraper)

@Apentogo it'll last longer than you might think it will. It's not like it's going to be left out in the elements. As for the tenons, that goes with any tenon joint. However, I'm sure he's already well aware of it and will tend to it as need arises.

This man is a natural Master Craftsman, he can make tools to work with and beautiful utensils and keepsakes and toys. He is a remarkable man and is the Grandest Grandfather in the world. I would love to own something he made with his own hands. A wonderful wonderful person, we love Grandpa.
I watch 20 videos on how to sharpen a wood chisel scary sharp and I’m slowly learning how to use them. I’m learning quickly a bad chisel can be sharpen very sharp but the edge need constant care, a great tool can work smoother and longer with less down time. Grandpa amu is only showing the fun parts not the constant resharpening. Massive respect good tight joints that don’t need glue ,mind blown! Stay safe and heathy thanks for sharing.

As many others have said, not only do you need to know about wood and its properties, but you also need to have deep knowledge of mechanical engineering, motive power, and so on and so forth. It's pretty close to the english pole lathe, but using rubber instead of a pole to provide the pull back motion. The traditional pole lathe looks easier to use though. Before you try planning what you want to build I'd look at a few pole and treadle lathe designs, I'm sure youtube and the net will have thousands of design variations.

What’s a three jaw chuck? What’s it for?
It's for gripping the workpiece while he's turning it. Traditional three jaw chucks for woodturning sell for hundreds of dollars.

@@神崎アオイ-o4o no. Once he's holding it in place he can turn it round. As long as he doesn't move it in the "chuck" it will stay cylindrical. I have chucked Square stock and turned it round on my lathe before.
Back in grandpa days, there was no diy TH-cam. They just did stuff, built things and mastered Diy 🙏

Who needs power tools or cnc machines when you have old man strength and ingenuity.
After watching the construction and installation of the driveshaft, including the two bearings, can anyone deny that Grandpa Amu is the "Master of the Press Fit"? It is amazing that he can achieve such precision joinery with the hand tools that he has at his disposal.
There is one omitted step that I would like to see. The center of the chuck has to be aligned with the pointy end of the spindle on the tailstock. The two elements must be colinear if the lathe is to work when both ends of the working piece need to be held fast. It seems to me that this is a difficult step and one that is not shown.
Nonetheless, the man is a craftsman and a genius. His son and daughter-in-law do a wonderful job of capturing his essence. Notice, for example, that he is never in a hurry.
If you look, the chuck actually has a small amount of wobble (not criticizing at all) so I'm thinking that centering actually wasn't a step. I'm pretty sure he just trusted his layout and marking skills along with comparing the pieces next to each other before assembly to get the alignment. I think it is literally just him trusting his many years of experience.

I’ve learned a lot from this old timer, Grandpa Amu is without a doubt a master carpenter and not just that he’s a master inventor, - if I’d live around this guys house I’d be staying over just to see what else I can learn also I like the fact that he employs the no nails tradition somehow everything is stronger and last longer, I thank you for your teachings- I’m a fan of your work,- my profession on the other hand instead of wood and hardly any tools, I get to use everything metal to repair/replace or make parts and pieces, I might just change it for carpentry so I won’t get to work on cold metal every morning, still making stuff is fun and satisfying at the end of the day.
