My grandmother used to run a lunch shack, go to rodios and surve burgers and hot dogs. Everything was prepaired the week before and frozen. All the patties taken from fresh beef, formed into balls, and frozen, cheese freshly sliced, so on and so forth. It was alot of work, and the lines can be up to 50 people waiting to order.

our last one was about 3 years ago, she was planing to retire it and sell off the shell she used for the shack.

It is so completely and utterly worth it. Almost too good to eat but impossible not to when you can smell it frying.

Hey guys, Floridian here so I know my way around a good cuban and I just want to say that if a cuban is just "a fancy ham and cheese sandwich" then british tea is just "fancy water." Cubans in Florida is like BBQ in Texas, not only is a huge part of our culture but also a widely compeditive thing and restaurants are always trying to prove they have the best cuban. The Cuban is truly an art, from the unique Cuban bread it must be served on to the debates on whether or not salami or mayo belongs on it. It is THE best sandwich in the world when done correctly and it is very easy to mess up. My personal favorite place to get a cuban is at the Colombia, and a side 1905 salad. Have fun drinking your "fancy water" but I approve of this cuban.
Agreed, I am for the salami personally. I used to make the Cubans at La Teresita (Pinellas resteraunt) so I am somewhat biased in that...
I maybe late but I agree with Columbia but I say with a full 1905.
Native Floridian here (but living abroad). Colombia is great. But the best Cubans are from mom and pop food shops found in the most unexpected places. The bread and the roasted pork are key. I have had so many versions, most with pickled peppers, some with Italian dressing instead of mustard (Tampa area, Ybor city, settled by Italians and then Cubans). I had Cuban friends who just brined and marinated a pig in the bathtub with ice, dug a pit in the back yard, put the pig in and covered it with banana leaves and smoldering charcoal. Then they left it all day or overnight. Sometimes they glazed it with guava juice (never seen rum in the mix but why not? Works for me!) I think the most important thing is to follow it up with a sweet, dark and hot cafecito and a dessert of guava jelly and cheese! Thanks for this, it brings back wonderful memories!

Guys, calm down. Even Babish has rehashed recipes from other people. That's what happens with cooking channels. Everyone will want to try to make Gordon Ramsay's scrambled eggs or Louis CK's fried chicken. It's no different than making food from movie's or shows.

I was just in Tampa and was so sad at the way they prepared the cubano where we ate. This is the way they should be made and it is amazing how so few ingrediants can come together into an extraordinary meal. Other treats from there are the Deviled crabs and Stuffed potatoes. Both are excellent and worth a try. Great job!

Accidentally came across your channel looking for random recipes to try. I've been watching your videos everyday for the last two weeks. This is one of the more doable recipes that I'm going to try. Lol Babish does not have the sole rights to recreating famous movie foods. This is not a new idea. Feast of Fiction is another great channel with this concept. Relax, and just make your damn Cuban sandwich.

@@peterromo8220 Taste is very subjective. What may be a better 'twist' to you may be a 'no-go area' to me. These are just guidelines and points of inspiration. You can take any recipe where you want to take it.

Guys, FYI, people have been doing food from movies before Binging With Babish.
I have to admit that I have not seen the movie. Being from Florida I have eaten many many Cuban sandwiches, the original Cuban sandwich was made in Tampa to feed the cigar workers. The sandwich has to be made on Cuban bread, yellow mustard on both sides of the bread, boiled ham, sliced pork (yours looked right) Genoa or hard salami, Swiss cheese, and dill pickle slices. Press the sandwich, yumm.

Binging with Babish didn't come up with the concept of making fictional food. He just happens to do it... and so is sorted. It's the same thing as saying "(insert chef) cooked steak. Nobody else can cook steak". If this video still bothers you, please just don't watch it...

I was wondering about that mojo too. Never seen rum, oregano, or that much salt and sugar in mojo because it's not really a brine. I usually throw in a little cumin and lime too. Not to mention those pickle quarters and the fact it wasn't pressed enough. It's probably not terrible, but definitely a departure from a classic Cubano. Still makes me hungry.

I don't know if anyone else has seen the movie but "Simply Irresistible" with Sarah Michelle Gellar. In the desert scene at the restaurant there are apples that when you cut into them, custard or crème pat (don't know how to spell it) sort of oozes from the middle. Like a chocolate lava cake, but the cake is an apple.
Damn, it's like 9:45am. I had a decent breakfast this morning, but watching this made me drool.
