    I think the most notable and interesting depictions of Dwarves in fiction are, Tolkin's Dwarves in LotR, The Dwarves of Orzammar in Dragon Age, and the Dwemer in The Elder Scrolls.
    The first is Tolkin's depiction and he's pretty much the godfather of modern fantasy, the second is an interesting take on their culture with ancestor worship as a corner stone of their civilization, and the third is a sub-species of Elves that used science and sorcery to create amazing technologies no other race in TES has been able to replicate fore they vanished over 4,000 years ago by the time of the first TES game.

    The dwarves tried the hardest out of all beings on Middle Earth. They genuinely cared about every race, except Orcs in which they hated passionately. The Dwarves mined into mountains living in precarious circumstances, surrounded by goblins, orcs and other creatures. They all but established the Kingdom of Dale, while providing the city with everything it needed to survive. Except food and sustenance in which Dale provided for the Dwarves. The Dwarves defended Eriador for as long as they could, while trying to advance middle earth's industrial base. That's how they awoke a Balrog. The Dwarves always lived next to danger, which is why they rarely experienced peace. That, and they absolutely would not compromise with Orcs.

    • @lucam7042
      @lucam7042 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      That's partly true, though the Dwarves didn't care for EVERY race out there, and they didn't protect Eriador as long as they could. They only aided their friends when they could, like when they helped the Elves or Eregion, or the Men of Dale. A great example of this is how in the First Age we don't hear much of Durin's folk, only the Dwarves of the West, which were the Firebeards and Broadbeams. Durin's folk kept to themselves until the Balrog finally awoke. The point is that the Dwarves aren't the most caring of folk, and this was proven when they killed the High King of Doriath over a Trinket.

      Aaand out of all the races they got fucked the most and were cryminally underused by Tolkien. It felt like he just HATED Dwarves.
      Fans of Dwarves: What happened with Dwarves at the end of it all? Elves get to heaven and Hobbits still exists (judging from Hobbit book) so they get something right?
      Tolkien: Fuck you and fuck them, they did nothing except for cleaning their old house (Moria) of orc scum and then died off. The end.
      Like seriously. WTF!?

    Interesting note, according to the Silmarillion, the Dwarves ended up short because they shrank under the hammer of Aulë who was ready to destroy them after accepting his wrong-doing. "Then Aulië took up a great hammer to smite the dwares and he wept." "And the dwarves shrank from the hammer and were afraid" They begged for mercy. Iluvatar then said "Thy offer I accepted even as it was made..." Awesome work :)

    I agree. I would add that mastering the ax is no small feat even for so brawny a race as they. All the weight is at the end of the haft, and in other hands the ax can be clumsy compared to a sword.

    • @TheExploringSeries
      @TheExploringSeries  8 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      Unfortunately, it's not really clear. Dwarves believe that when they die, Aulë will watch over them in the Halls of Mandos until the Last Battle, when they will return to help rebuild the world. Elves believed that Dwarves just returned to the earth when they die. Tolkien never really stated outright what happens to them.

    I've been going back and revisiting Lord of the rings now in my adulthood not having really done so since I was a child.
    And it occurs to me now, how alone Gimli is throughout the trilogy. Legolas always gets to be surrounded by elves, and Aragorn by men, and Gimli is always the only dwarf. I much prefer him in the books astute honorable and grandiose, an equal to Legolas in ability as sometimes Gimli is the winner and sometimes Legolas, in their friendly play.
    I caught myself saying man there should have been a whole bunch more about dwarves
    Dwarves are freaking awesome. Even throughout the Hobbit you almost learn more about elves
    dwarf lore is always a side-note it seems even when they're front and center always some place that used to belong to dwarves but doesn't any more

    I'm surprised there are no records of half-dwarves in Middle Earth's history despite the fact that Thorin Oakensheild looked more like a man than a dwarf in The Hobbit Trilogy.

  • @spartanlibertarian520
    @spartanlibertarian520 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I appreciate the thought that went into this video, but there was simply too much flawed or incorrect information provided. I'll provide an example: When Eru came to know of Aule's creation and disobedience, he ordered them to be destroyed as punishment. Aule had given them free will and agency, however, so they cowered in fear when Aule went to obey Eru's command. Seeing that they had wills of their own (rather than mindless creatures motivated solely by Aule's thought and will, as Melkor would have done), Eru decided to spare them, on the condition that they and his first-born shall always be at odds with one another.

    • @TheExploringSeries
      @TheExploringSeries  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That would imply that beings other than Eru could create true life. In fact, Eru's words in the Silmarillion seem to directly contradict yours: "Why hast thou done this? Why dost thou attempt a thing which thou knowest is beyond thy power and thy authority? For thou hast from me as a gift thy own bring only, and no more; and therefore the creatures of thy hand and mind can live only by that being, moving when thou thinkest to move them, and if thy thought be elsewhere, standing idle. Is that thy desire?"

    • @spartanlibertarian520
      @spartanlibertarian520 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheExploringSeries And yet the fact that they cowered, or reacted at all, to Aule's actions showed that they had minds of their own. They might have only been able to act when Aule gave thought to them, but they were distinct from him and possessed self-awareness. They were up to that point without a soul, which was later granted by Eru. Aule had the power to create things, as did all the Valar, but they could not create a soul. Only Eru had that power. So yes, they had self-awareness and did not wish to perish, but neither did they possess a soul. That was what was given to them when Eru blessed them.

    • @TheExploringSeries
      @TheExploringSeries  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Perhaps others can disagree with me, but I didn't interpret the text that way. The dwarves went from "...the creatures of thy hand and mind can
      live only by that being, moving when thou thinkest to move them," to "Dost thou not see that these things have now a life of their own, and speak with their own voices?" And right after this, Aulë gives thanks to Eru. I think most people interepret it this way, as you're the first to bring this up. Also, as more of a factual thing, Eru did not order Aulë to destroy the dwarves, Aulë just assumed he should do so.

    Do you know if there's any credence to the theory that the Arkenstone is one of the Silmarils?

    • @TheExploringSeries
      @TheExploringSeries  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That theory basically comes from the Arkenstone being a highly lustrous jewel that everybody wants, as well as Tolkien basically using the old English from of Arkenstone to originally describe the Silmarils. The problem is that The Hobbit states that the Dwarves dug and cut the Arkenstone out of the mountain, so I doubt it was meant to be a Silmaril.

      The dwarves believed that their spirits would gather in Aüle's halls after death. After all, they were granted life and spirits as any other race by the main goddess. Humans were believed to travel to the main goddess after death since she loved them so which made the elves super bitter and jealous since they just go to Mandos.

      In the books Sauron attacks Lothlorien, Mirkwood, Dale and Erebor as well, not only Minas Tirith. The Battle of Dale was a battle fought between the Kingdom of Dale(45.000 men) allied with the Dwarves of Erebor(55.000 dwarves), against the Easterlings of Rhûn(200.000 easterlings) in the valley of Dale during the War of the Ring in the late Third Age. A few sturdy warriors led by Brand(the son of Bain and the grandson of Bard the Bowman) and Dáin II Ironfoot fought bravely before the Gate of Lonely Mountain, which was not taken. In the end, Dáin was killed as he stood defending the body of his ally Brand. Meanwhile, the defenders of the Mountain were able to withstand the siege. To the misfortune of the Easterlings, the forces of Gondor and Rohan defeated the main power of Sauron in the southern theatre, causing the northern army to lose heart. Seeing the morale of their foes being sapped by news of victory in the south, the Armies of Dale and Erebor under the new Kings, Bard II and Thorin III Stonehelm managed to lift the siege and drove the Easterlings out of Dale.

      While the 3 silmarils would worth 30,000,000 each of them and the light of the two tress would worth 3X of trillion all the wealth of moria and erebor is enough to buy the 2 trees of light
