Lol, I have a sister like that. She doesn't mind geckos/lizards(I had a leopard gecko that she liked years ago). But she doesn't like snakes as pets. Not afraid of them persay, but she just doesn't find them cute, lol
I bought mine from Petco. He was the only one left and they said he was too aggressive to hold and was probably going to be put down. The thermometer in his cage said it was at 78 degrees and the humidity was at 10%. I couldn’t leave him there. It’s been a year and he is still going strong.
Seemed like he was miserable I can't believe they were just going to put him down they didn't even know how to take care of him glad you took him it really shows how much they give a fuck about the animals
J&J 81 I think the only part about buying online that irks me is you don’t know. You just don’t. what if you get it and it has kinks? Or mites, or an RI? Some people are not ethical and sell regardless of the health of their animals. I will never buy online because of it. Not saying that those things are suuuuper huge issues but there are bigger issues, and I’d rather go to a breeder in person so I can see what I’m purchasing. I’m sure in later years with more research and the ability to post videos of each individual snake, things will change, but for me I just don’t know if I could take the chance!!
paige pawlawski he does have good sales, and I understand that people have opinions, but Brian isn’t very well at taking care of his reptiles. I just personally wouldn’t support him.
Normals are really underrated. My first ball python is 100% het pied - visually, she looks like a normal - but just in case I ever start breeding, I’d like to have a gene or two to play with.
I can't keep normals in stock they are very high in demand in my area. And I get 50 for males and 75 for females. And my babies are way healthier and better quality than what you get at a chain pet store for 79.99.
Meg R.L. My first ball python who is 8 months now is a 50% her hypo. When she’s old enough to breed in a year or two Im hoping for some ghost maybe hehehe
I’ve been waiting 23 years! I’ve wanted a ball python since I was 8! I have 3 kids 6yrs-12yrs and they all love snakes so I’m excited to finally add one (or who knows, maybe I’ll breed!) to our family!

After doing my research for about 2 months watching all your videos, I finally purchased my first ball python yesterday! It’s a male pastel yellow belly juvenile thats a few months old and already transitioned to frozen thawed hoppers. Thank you for your consistent posting and sharing your knowledge!
I convinced my parents to finally get a ball python and I showed them some of your videos and they got super considerate after they saw your videos so thank you!
In my own personal opinion, they're both great for first snakes, but for two different reasons. Ball pythons are far more docile but can be hard to get feeding and hard to get acclimated to their new environment. Their docility can turn over into timidity, which can be frustrating and hard for a beginner to know what to do. Boas are good for beginners because I would argue that they are more Hardy and more resistant to small mistakes in husbandry, and feeding them will almost never be an issue. But, they can be quite bitey and defensive as babies, and if not handled out of fear, they can carry that bitey defensiveness over into adulthood, and then that's a problem. So they're both good, but for two different reasons.
I am thinking about getting one from petco, this one girl actually owns ball pythons and taught us all about it and we even got to touch it! She was so nice and helpful.
I want a ball python so bad. I have been saving money for years, and I finally found out what I wanted to spend it on. I have like no friends. The closest thing I have is my brothers dog. I am very lonley. But I'm 14. My mom thinks it will get out. I would make sure it didnt. Now I am very many sadness.
I’m fourteen and i just moved so i have no friends as well. i’ve been asking for a ball python for years and my mom is finally considering it :D it might take a while for your parent to warm up to them but if you keep on educating them on how amazing these snakes are they usually will start warming up to getting one
The slide on top cage will prevent any escaping, heating pads underneath the cage and some warm lights, make sure the cage is 3’x18” so you don’t need a new cage for it, other then that just handle it slowly and consistently, if it snaps at you don’t react much and don’t put it down for a few weeks, they are shy and can be skittish…
I love my normal ball python. She’s got some cool hets, but what really drew me to her was just how alert and aware she seemed. She’s a great companion when I’m reading or doing my makeup, totally content to just hang off my neck or my wrist. She looooves to eat and I can’t wait for her to reach her full size. I think it’s pretty incredible that I’ll probably still have her when I’m in my fifties.
There is a family run store around where I live, they breed fish and reptiles as well as tarantulas, they are an amazing store, I have only ever bought fish from them but I’m going today to get a ball python. Edit: oh also this store is a vendor for reptile shows, usually at shows they have different types of geckos and tarantulas, rarely do they do snakes at shows. Also are people really squeamish about feeding live, I feed my king snake live and it’s never bothered me.
Some big chain pet stores ban feeding live, they run into problems with hatchling ball pythons because that's really what they need to get them started.
My oldest ball python is a 13 yr old male. He's still going strong and love taking him out on warm sunny days. I now have 2 beautiful females and he definitely taken a liking to Nova, a 4 1/2 ft female. Hoping to pair them up next year and the other female, sunshine, is 5 years old and has a male to pair up with as well that belongs to a buddy of mine. Fingers crossed for babies next year.
I started with a pair of het pied and didn't breed them for years. Now I just filled up my 5 draw boaphile rack. I just got a pewter pied female possibly leopard to go with my pewter het pied male. It was labeled black pastel/pastel but upon advice from other breeders said he was a pewter. So I bit the bullet and got her. Can't wait to see these babies. You are right about getting them. I collect other stuff and once you get 1 you have to get more. I bought that rack so I limited myself to 5 BPs or I would have 30 or more. Yes absolutely buy a female whatever morph you like if you are a 1st time buyer. You will get your money back from buying the snake & tank & accessories for the tank.
Great enthusiasm I’ve been wanting to get one for a few years now but the dead mice gross me out been watching videos of feedings but seeing it in person still gets me
I’m like a huge animal person and I thought feedings would be awful but they aren’t that bad. You get used to it. I used frozen thaw, that’s the best option
Mine was in 2012. " Lily " was a normal ball ... an emaciated female from a Craigslist ad. $ 25 dollars. Had her vetted and made sure she was well cared for. I rehome her in 2016 to a guy that really wanted her. Went to a good home. Over the years I have sold and bought different morphs ... still evolving to this day. I do stick with Co Doms pretty much. Just love my foundation bloodlines❤
Just went to reptacon and got one nearly exactly the same as the one you’re holding in the video, she’s gorgeous, I like how I’m literally still watching this even though I already have her 😂
This is really great information. I’m leaving for Basic Training in September and I’m looking to get everything set up for a ball python when I come back. Thanks for the video!
Great info!! I was looking into getting a Ball Python but wasn't sure of their temperament but now I know. My kids want one but I had to be safe getting them a snake they'll be safe with. I appreciate all the info thank you!!
Same I'm doing so much damn research and now I'm looking at this morph I want and almost fully have my mom convinced to buy me one. I originally wanted a "classic" ball python but now I'm looking at this Cinnamon Banana ball morph. Hopefully my mom will say yes and I hope I'm able to be the best snake parent I can be
I’m so glad you mentioned not to go to the main chain pet stores. I knew someone who worked in one and they noticed how bad their environment was but when he brought it to light they didn’t care one little bit…
I unfortanantly bought my first snake from a pet store a few years ago I did all the research bought an encloser had it set up for a month before buying the snake it died with in a week. It put me off snakes for a few months I went to a retile expo just to look and ended up leaving with a cheap ball python I got for $80 and iv had her ever since. I got lucky with her she has a crazy prey drive never has refused food.
Would you mind posting all of the exact tools that you recommended maybe with link to where I could get this stuff online maybe in the video description? I would like to buy all of the stuff first and have it ready to go before I buy my snake.
Okay so, I ended up with a ball python...from a pet mill...he was starving...I could see his skin drooping. He's gained weight, but his weight progression has slowed. He's been eating small mice. How do I switch him to rat pups? I don't want him stuck on mice. And I've seen mixed reviews about feeding him every 5 days...which is what im wanting to do. He's had his first bowel movement for me. He's at over 7 meals at this point. I know it was a lot! You are one of the most experienced TH-camrs I watch!
I just bought a ball today. used to have a nice size collection but couldn’t bring them when i moved to colorado. im getting a boa next week! i cant wait for the reptile expo in august! gonna add much more to my collection!
Been waiting and researching for years. long time. Today my mom caved in a bit and we got some substrate and stuff to slowly build the tank up and eventually.... maybe put in a BP?
I've been wanting a ball python snake since I got involved in the reptile community. It's been so many months, or even years? I have watched so many educational videos on how to maintain your snake, their housing, how to bathe, when to bathe, heat burns, etc. but my parents are terrified of snakes and don't want another pet (i own a dog already). Making jokes that my python would eat the dog etc. It's sad really, hah. When I'm 18 I'm definately getting myself a pretty snake. This infortmation was really helpful, thank you! 💖
I also live in Colorado I live near Denver in city called Broomfield and I love snakes but my parents don’t like the idea of keeping snakes in the hiuse
Half logs are good enrichment - my BP is shy and uses it as cover to go from his warm hide to his cool hide, he also likes to have half his body out of his cool hide and he will rest his head on the half log when he wants to just look around or something
I just bought a normal Male ball python from a reptile store the other day. I paid $200 though lol. I've always wanted a python and it was love at first sight. :)
i have been asking my mom for a ball python for about a year now and i FINALLY have the space in my room im still trying to convince her wish me luck!!!
PLZ HELP- I have had 3 different ball pythons now & all 3 have died within the first 2-3 days of owning them. I followed googles suggestions and bought a 25 gallon starter tank, also didn’t even fill it all the way, maybe 3 quarters at most. The first day the ball pythons usually very active and swimming around but then by the second or third day they are floating at the surface. All the water I use has been dechlorinated as well. What am I doing wrong?
Hey Chris great video as always. Have you tried thawing out your rodents in a bucket of warm water then put them under the heat lamp? It really speeds up the time and evenly thaws them out. I dry them off a little with a towel before I put them under the lamp but it's saved me hours waiting for my rodents to thaw, not to mention the rodents are cleaner when you feed them to your snakes and you don't risk getting them to hot under the heat lamp. Keep up the great work I really dig your videos.
I would like a cool morphs but the problem is I am on a tight budget so if you know some $100 cool morphs pls tell me It would be a great help👍👍I subscribed👍
Thank you for posting this. I know it's a few yrs old, but my son is very interested in getting a ball python. I corrupted my kid to them. I got a month old when I was about 28 and she was an amazing girl. Fed her pinkies, and up to jumbos.
Are you going to be at the reptile expo here in Denver in october!? I just purchased a yellowbelly pied het Lav female from mutation creation. I had no clue you were in Co!
I'm using CHE on my new ball tanks because I didnt want to invest in a bunch of heat pads. I just messed around and bought a few different wattages until I got one that worked right for each enclosure. I dont really have a problem with humidity due to my substrate. Its a jungle mix and bark mixture. I wet it up every now and then, but I have to do that regardless of my heat source due to ambient humidity.
I want to adopt a wild type... I think they're absolutely beautiful. Mostly I love the ball personality. I see them for adoption at a local reptile pet store, hopefully someday!
My first is a normal (she seems to be a reduced pattern she's missing all her alien heads and just hady one keyhole, then two odd shaped spots, and she has that gravely pattern I thought were mites at the beginning 😂 no clue what she is) Went to a let store early with my son one morning and she had came in that same morning just as I was getting there and looking at the reptile section like I always do, and was still in the travel container. She was so active and inquisitive....I had to being her home. 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂 Great decision. She's well behaved and a beauty. Now I'm getting #2 this week. He's a banana with some others co doms mixed in. Idk if I'll ever breed but I'm happy to have them. 😁
As I live with my brother, he is allergic to dogs and I absolutely love dogs. I do own a bearded dragon but I’m really interested in ball pythons so thank you!!
I just got my first ball python(and my first snake, yeee) a week ago Wednesday. I actually got her from a local rescue, so she came with set up and everything. I need to change her to substrate though, she's currently on the reptile rugs. Which aren't terrible, but substrate would be a lot easier to clean waste out of, lol. Not sure on the age, but they think she's maybe got another foot before full length, so maybe around 5 years or less? They told me she was a normal Morph, but showing pics of her to other owners/people that know, they say she might be a Fire morph, and looking at pics online she does look very similar, lol.
Yes a pet store sold me one that had not even had its first meal . They told me it had ate . I was livid that pet store is horrible. The store is in Longview Texas just sayin . The manager said oh we weren't supposed to sell this one.
I have a question for you Chris, what is the best way to contact you, in order to ask questions? The one I’d like to know is for the spag moss you use in the containers, where do you buy the netting? What is it called? Just netting.... You should make a page on Facebook/etc, so peoples questions can get answered..
You can post questions under any video here on TH-cam and I'll see them. I used to buy the red netting with the bigger holes but I had a king snake get stuck and injured trying to crawl through it, I took a pretty good bite trying to get him out LOL. I'd recommend using nylon stockings or they actually sell nylon disposable socks that are really cheap.
Chris Hardwick do you get any banana/coral glow/enchi pythons for sell on morph market, juvenile or young adult. I like the yellow color with the black spots.
Can you do a video on the VE 300? Would that work for multiple under tank heaters, or is it more for running heat tape? Im at the point where I dont have enough snakes for a whole rack but I also dont want to invest in a bunch of display tanks with UTH. I would build a rack with more capacity than I need, but I dont want to be stuck running more heat tape than necessary.
What do you think about getting a Phytons from the rescue centres which I can get the animal checked by the vet? Reticulated, Royal and Ball Phytons are there waiting to be adopted. You are expert and I need your advice. This will be my first exotic animal. If you recommend, which type of phyton above-mentioned do you recommend for a beginner?
Royal and ball pythons are the same thing, if that's a full Mainland retic it can get over 300 pounds, unless you have a whole team of people willing to help you I'd stay away from the retic. You may be OK if it has dwarf or super dwarf in the genetics but may be impossible to know at a rescue.
Let the addiction begin
I'm so scared I'm going to be hooked. As a current rat lover and will always be, I'm worried I'll never be able to have rats loll

Put down a snake? That's nuts, you can easily tame down a ball python. You should have them ship it to me LOL.
Seemed like he was miserable I can't believe they were just going to put him down they didn't even know how to take care of him glad you took him it really shows how much they give a fuck about the animals

Ooooor I totally totally recommend bhbreptiles! The breeder has a TH-cam channel and is very good at what he does!

hey man, this was so helpful thank you! (hopefully getting a ball python soon after the lockdown)
Glad it helped!
Always have loved loved loved snakes and plan to get one after I move out and become stable. Early research lol
I currently have rats and am worried that they may hurt my baby snake hence why I'm waiting until older
Nice!
How'd it go
I've been wanting a ball python snake since I got involved in the reptile community.
I put the heat mat under the tank, 1 inch of substrate & buried the probe into the substrate. Is that going to be accurate enough ?
I just bought a normal Male ball python from a reptile store the other day. I paid $200 though lol. I've always wanted a python and it was love at first sight. :)
Great video Chris. Very helpful and informational!
Vpi axanthic het albino was my first snake living in a fb70 5 high rack now with my calico pastel, bumbleebee, my florida king and a okeetee corn.
i have been asking my mom for a ball python for about a year now and i FINALLY have the space in my room
im still trying to convince her wish me luck!!!
That rack system tho “goals” I have 4 enclosures in my room and I’m looking for more so I need to try the rack thing great video btw
A little 420 ball python run on lol
This video is amazing, I learned a lot.
Thank you!
Just went to a reptile show and bough a ball python for $75 it's a month and a half years old
Congrats!
Do you have like saw scaled viper snakes or inland taipan snakes?
I Love your videos, my favorites are you & Garrick Demeyer.
Thanks, I appreciate the comment!
Yeah I love this channel and gerrick is a cool cat he does tend to rub people the wrong way lol.
How do you socialize with all those snakes? Like I'm about to adopt a 2 ft ball python she's already used to being held and stuff but you have so many
I don't really care about cool morphs! I just want a snake because they make cool and fun pets! Great vid learned a lot!
They do make great pets!
I would like a cool morphs but the problem is I am on a tight budget so if you know some $100 cool morphs pls tell me It would be a great help👍👍I subscribed👍
I need some help. I want a ball python
But I live in a hot country,Thailand.
Will I still need a heat mat for the cage setup?
Maybe you won't!
Chris Hardwick thx!
Thank you for posting this. I know it's a few yrs old, but my son is very interested in getting a ball python. I corrupted my kid to them. I got a month old when I was about 28 and she was an amazing girl. Fed her pinkies, and up to jumbos.
Hey! I’m in Colorado too! Awesome that we have cool people here
Are you going to be at the reptile expo here in Denver in october!? I just purchased a yellowbelly pied het Lav female from mutation creation. I had no clue you were in Co!
Yes, I'll be at the Denver Repticon, October 19-20, 2019.
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures awesome! We will come find you! We live in Parker. Will you have any snakes for sell? If so, what morphs do you have?
I'm using CHE on my new ball tanks because I didnt want to invest in a bunch of heat pads. I just messed around and bought a few different wattages until I got one that worked right for each enclosure. I dont really have a problem with humidity due to my substrate. Its a jungle mix and bark mixture. I wet it up every now and then, but I have to do that regardless of my heat source due to ambient humidity.
I want to adopt a wild type... I think they're absolutely beautiful. Mostly I love the ball personality. I see them for adoption at a local reptile pet store, hopefully someday!
What about costs for feeding?
I just got my ball python yesterday and i love it. Can you keep snakes together?
My first is a normal (she seems to be a reduced pattern she's missing all her alien heads and just hady one keyhole, then two odd shaped spots, and she has that gravely pattern I thought were mites at the beginning 😂 no clue what she is)
Went to a let store early with my son one morning and she had came in that same morning just as I was getting there and looking at the reptile section like I always do, and was still in the travel container. She was so active and inquisitive....I had to being her home. 🤷🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️😂
Great decision.
She's well behaved and a beauty.
Now I'm getting #2 this week. He's a banana with some others co doms mixed in. Idk if I'll ever breed but I'm happy to have them. 😁
I’m sorry if I missed it in the video but is there any breeders you recommend to buy a ball python from
I would try a local reptile show.
This mans is almost hearting every positive comment thats some commitment
I used to heart them all, now I actually respond to every comment! I'm a full time TH-camr now, it's my job LOL.
This is what makes a great TH-camr you have helped me a lot because I was thinking about getting a ball python thanks dude!
Very informative channel! I would get a BP soon and I have learned alot from you. 🙂 Greetings from Norway
I had to do a Google search to see where Norway was, I wasn't sure. I zoomed in, I think I see your house!
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures Hahahaha! You are funny! A small country on the other side of the pond. 😂 We are your allies. 🙂
do you know where i can get a book on how breed ball python genetics
what size of an enclousure should i get
Maybe this will help you out:
th-cam.com/video/8ecHE6D0uj4/w-d-xo.html
A baby ball needs a 20g long when full size go up to a 40g breeding tank ur snake should be able to stretch 100% out
How is that U hide if you place it against the glass with a black paper covering glass so it's kinda a wall?
As I live with my brother, he is allergic to dogs and I absolutely love dogs. I do own a bearded dragon but I’m really interested in ball pythons so thank you!!
Also, I’m wondering are plain white ball pythons rare? I’m not sure but they are very pretty to me and I’m not looking for anything over $100
Syder • I have never seen one under $2000 but then again I’d probably buy one if I had the money they are so pretty
Nvm here’s one www.morphmarket.com/us/c/reptiles/pythons/ball-pythons/236125
But it’s not really under $100 sorry
I just got my first ball python(and my first snake, yeee) a week ago Wednesday. I actually got her from a local rescue, so she came with set up and everything. I need to change her to substrate though, she's currently on the reptile rugs. Which aren't terrible, but substrate would be a lot easier to clean waste out of, lol. Not sure on the age, but they think she's maybe got another foot before full length, so maybe around 5 years or less? They told me she was a normal Morph, but showing pics of her to other owners/people that know, they say she might be a Fire morph, and looking at pics online she does look very similar, lol.
I just got a baby male and he is so sweet and pretty he is pastel and his name is Kyle I’m gonna try to feed him this weekend
Awesome!
Lol crazy the scaleless head is the closes you got to a normal but it’s one of the most wanted snakes out there right now
My male normal has an amazing tracking on his belly which I hope to get a female firefly later on but what would a normal × firefly would make?
Hey Chris is there another bedding beside the coconut bedding?
Some people use ecoearth, shredded aspen or newspaper.
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures which one is the batter of those?
Hey man. I’m thinking about importing a wild baby anaconda from Ecuador. Do you think it’s a good idea for my first snake?
I have some Coral Glows on there now, maybe next year I'll have some with Enchi.
Would newspaper fare any better than paper towels?
Maybe so!
I just bought my new baby Mojave python he is the sweetest little thing
Can you do a video on the VE 300? Would that work for multiple under tank heaters, or is it more for running heat tape? Im at the point where I dont have enough snakes for a whole rack but I also dont want to invest in a bunch of display tanks with UTH. I would build a rack with more capacity than I need, but I dont want to be stuck running more heat tape than necessary.
Can I feed them live mice and are they comfortable with being handled?
Great information, thanks for sharing!
You bet!
How often do you do maintenance in your ball pythons enclosure?
Once a day!
@@ChrisHardwickanimaladventures then Ball Phytons are the best for me I think as a beginner.
How can I buy one from you. I have one that's about 3 years old and I'm ready for another one
