We read about half of this document for my GED class the past couple of days. It's very interesting, and helps explain why certain things are the way they are in American politics.

Yep... democracy is causing problems... Luckily, it is explicitly stated in our founding documents that we are a REPUBLIC, not a democracy. Khan was wrong when he thought that Madison was explaining a "flavor of democracy." He was actually explaining why democracy in a republic is a bad thing.

I'd argue that his views may be less elitest and more idealist, as to finding a more suitable representative in a more populous republic.

A republic is not a flavor of democracy... A republic does not have political factions, whereas a democracy does. Madison was pointing out why democracy was a bad thing in the republic that was founded.

To what extent do political parties represent the factions Madison warned against in Federalist 10?

I see political parties as evidence of the factions Madison mentioned along with interest groups in general.

This is clearly a democrat take on what Madison wrote about our republic. Food for thought: "democracy" was never once mentioned in the US Constitution nor the Declaration of Independence. The word "REPUBLIC" on the other hand, is mentioned. It's almost as if they gave us a republic, not a democracy, because they knew that political parties were bad, and democracy necessarily will create at least 2 political parties of opposition, each being able to remove the freedom of the other side... Democracy is 2 wolves and a sheep voting on what's for dinner, and our founding fathers knew this, which was why they gave us a REPUBLIC, not a democracy.
