Judge Dredd Tropes and a Visit to London - Comic Tropes (Episode 11)

- This episode, I visit London and go to Forbidden Planet to get a back issue of England's popular Judge Dredd comic book by 2000 AD. I list the tropes you could expect to find in a Dredd comic, read part of the Block Mania storyline and count up the tropes. Then I drink a British beer for every trope he encounters.

Honestly that's how more tourists should do it. Maybe not comic shops specifically but they should skip the landmarks.

We had great weather during our visit in August. Loved exploring London and Cardiff. We plan to go back and explore more of the countryside and head up to Edinburgh next time.
Edinburgh's fantastic. One half is fairly cosmopolitan, then across the river is like something from an old Hammer horror movie, complete with a big Castle right bang in the middle. Make sure and go on one of the historical night time ghost tours whilst you are there. It takes you through the old half of the city, into old taverns, into the graveyard 'Burke and Hare' used to rob, and down through the creepy underground city vaults. Its well worth it. We had some old dude as a guide who looked exactly like Matthew Hopkins Witchfinder General (complete with hat and cape). He was a proper character.
If you're heading up to Edinburgh you should stop off in North Yorkshire on your way. Beautiful part of the country and the setting for the opening of American Werewolf in London.
I kinda hate sunny weather. I'd happily trade places with any brit.

There is so much in Dredd that rings so true in 2020 it's now like reading a newspaper, not a comic.
I think they're letting crime go, 1) as part of the multi-faceted attack (every kind of war but "conventional" or what people would think of as war) to break the one country left that could really stand up to a one world government hell becoming reality and/or 2) to get the people SO scared and crime be so rampant that the general populace will welcome total totalitarianism and military martial law.
SIDE NOTE: Frank Millers' Robocop series from AVAST is a AMAZING read and also very reminiscent in parts of todays goings on. That's actually how I learned about the 'Night of the Long Knives' and today I refer to the summer of 2020 as the Summer of the Long Knives as it was similar in purpose and result to a degree, especially in places like NYC.
Not sure how much you check new comments on old videos: I've been going through your back catalogue of videos and this one feels special. Your dive thru Judge Dredd is much more casual but the overall vibe of the video is "excited friend shares video diary from Britain" and I love it. I look up to you and your content (I hope to make videos of my own on comic books) and this video really just makes me feel good. Like everything will be alright. Hope you're doing well and getting plenty of time to read.
What about the #1 Dredd trope? Never taking off helmet or at least cropping or obscuring his upper face?

Loved 2000 AD because of Brian Bolland's work on Dredd and Alan Davis's work on D.R. and Quinch. They were so different from the standard comic fare that we were offered by American Comics that were being produced when I was a kid. And the weekly anthology aspect was terrific.
Only just discovered your channel and am working my way through it, but glad that Dredd got an early entry. I grew up reading 2000AD - as a Brit growing up in a village in Hampshire, it was the only comic I could regularly get my hands on.
A lot of Dredd's 80s run was a biting satire of British culture and politics, told through the medium of an American fascist supercop, written by mostly British or European writers and artists. It was entry level politics for a bunch of British kids and has served me well over the years, never more so than the current time.
I hope you keep up the passion and enthusiasm.
I always saw Dredd as a satire of American cop movies like Bullitt, Dirty Harry etc and the myriad ways they seem unintentionally comical to UK audiences
@@Tsotha Oh, absolutely. You have to remember the extent to which American media and politics impacted the UK, especially in the 80s. As a character, Dredd was the ultimate expression of the fascistic supercop, but as a comic strip it was a dissection of British politics and culture.

I'm glad you did this video. I just picked up a collection of Dredd stories from 2000A.D. and I'm liking the art style a lot. The Brits really knew how to pack a lot of story and visual information in only 5 or so pages. I'm a little (only a little) disappointed with how simple the stories are so far, but I imagine they'll really pick up steam when they figured out the character and the world he lives in.
Near the end, those are bacon snacks, bacon chips. You can easily get them in movie theaters here in Sweden =)

You had a pretty damn good selection of beers there. Hobgoblin is a favourite of mine (The lighter version, Hobgoblin Gold is even nicer...). Also, the Crabbies' stuff is far too easy to drink. It's the best hair of the dog.

I do forget that some people haven’t had drinks like hobgoblin and Speckled Hen before, especially bacon crisps, those are a classic; it’s interesting to see people trying mundane UK stuff.

Oh Rogue Trooper is great. I used to go to youth theatre with Dave Gibbons son as a kid so I have signed Rogue Trooper and Watchmen stuff. My favourite was actually Strontium Dog. Mutant bounty hunters kick arse!

That's a great one! I love the part where there's this huge monster lumbering up, I mean stories tall, and it turns out to be Quinch's mother. "Care for a scone?"

Not really a "pun" so much as a reference. There's no play on words -- the blocks are just named after famous people.
Like the "Lincon" parkway and "Malcom X" Blvd.

@@paulheap1982 no, but still is not a pun. An example would be, lets say, a character opens package of ham and the brand is John Hamm. Or even a block named Robert Block (after Psycho's writer Robert Bloch). The block names are just humorous references, but not puns. It has to have a play with words.

Probably the best Judge Dredd storyline is _America_ - its so good, it kind of ruined the character...
(spoilers ahead, read a few Dredd stories before reading _America_ some recommendations include:
_Apocalypse War_ (this video discusses the prologue, _Block Mania_ ), The Dark Judge trilogy, _The Cursed Earth_ , _The Day the Law Died_ , and _The Judge Child Quest_ . There are good stories after _America_ as well, but it was more difficult to write for him at that point)
...By ruining the character I mean that for the dozen or so years of stories before _America_ Dredd is the protagonist but there's always a subtext that he might not be the good guy. By being told by a character that was in love with a revolutionary, _America_ makes it clear that Dredd is not a hero at all, but actually a sort of anti-Superman. If Superman stands for truth, justice, and the American way - Mega-City One asks the question: what if the American way has nothing to do with truth or justice? Judge Dredd is the answer to that question. Dredd works entirely within the law (of Mega City One, he doesn't give a drok about the laws of other mega cities), but the law enables him to be a monster. That's why the "worse than fascism" trope mentioned in this video works is an important insight.
Awesome that you came to my city! I discovered your channel a few months ago. Hobgoblin made me lol, when I drink with certain friends there's a rule that there needs to be at least one bottle of it involved.
I haven't read 2000AD for a while, but I wonder how many other cities apart from Mega City 1 they've fleshed out properly. I remember Mega City 2 and Brit-Cit would pop up, and I vaguely remember that Armitage series fleshing out the latter, but not much of it since I was a kid. I also remember being blown away by Frank Quitely's art on Shimura and the world of Hondo City.
Dredd and Lemmy - the best badasses out of England
Wow. I found my guide for when I go to know england :) . I buy the complete cases file 1 this week. First time publish in Brasil and got all hardcovers editions until now. Best british comic in my opinion. Old speckled hen is my favorite beer in the world, unhappiness is pretty expansive here :(

Denmark street was great in the late 80s. All the best guitar shops and Forbidden Planet, all in one place. London has become a hipsterised shadow of its former self, unfortunately. I was lucky enough to do my degree at London Uni back in those days.

Watching in 2020 and live in the UK and yes somehow Coronation Street is still running and is actually the longest running Tv show of all time debuting in 1965 the year the before Dr Who
Not true. Coronation Street first aired in 1960 (and is still going in 2024 as I type this), whereas Doctor Who first aired in 1963.

As a kid, Forbidden Planet in Union Square, NYC was actually the very first comic book store I'd ever gone into. I was about 10, probably 1990 when it was still on the corner of Broadway and 12th (?) street in its original location! Was a way better shop than the one it's in now across Broadway. I always thought it started HERE not in London!

Dark They Were & Golden Eyed was the best comic book shop in London in the 1970's. It predated FP by a number of years.

Dredd is a Scottish book actually. Not English. Don't want to be petty but DC Thomson is a Dundee based publisher. So Dredd is a Scottish creation.
Hi Skunkape, I'm a Brit and really enjoyed this video.
My top tip is to get hold of the collections of the 2000AD strip Savage, by Pat Mills and Charlie Adlard (Walking Dead). It is set in the ABC Warriors/Nemesis universe and is one of the best dark satires that 2000AD has produced.

No problem! I don't think volume 1 is in print, Amazon seems to be doing the speculative thing where a used or new copy has a ridiculous price. It's possible the Rebellion website has it for tablets.

He's been my favorite since around 87. I have all the Eagle comics and a lot of Quality comics, buncha the DC stuff, and a few imported 2000 AD issues.

Most of the Dredd stories I've read come from the Eagle reprints, and I found that Dredd was surprisingly compassionate. But that's just a small sample of decades of stories.

Another British/French comic you can do is Requiem: Vampire Knight by Pat Mills. It's very cynical and the story is bonkers but really good.
Oh, hi! - you just caught me wondering if this video is so old that I've not just caught you doing something.
Nobody in comics that is close to human (ie not a god or super/ paranormally powered being) has a higher kill count than Dreed. He destroyed an entire Mega City with millions of people on top of his normal killing.
Our beer is quite a bit stronger than American beer, so I'm not surprised you were getting tipsy if you were downing bottles one after another.

Ahh 2000AD, Judge Dredd is one of my favourite comic characters. Culturally my country and England are practically the same, so 2000AD and the Megazine always appeal to me that bit more. It's kine of sad that 2000AD doesn't get the recognition it deserves. Also do some Garth Ennis and Patrick Mills tropes, Mills was born in Ireland but grew up in England, and Ennis is a fellow Irish man. Also if you like Judge Dredd, read the story Necropolis, it is amazing, also the Cursed Earth, Day of Chaos, America, Mechanismo, and the Apocalypse War to name a few. What I love about 2000AD is the fact that it isn't just satire, it's a statement upon society itself, the comics are oozing with depth. Edit: Also, I know this isn't 2000AD, but I recommend checking out a comic called Carnage: Mind Bomb, by Warren Ellis, it's like Marvels answer to Arkham Asylum, it goes into the mind of Cletus Cassiday, and you actually find yourself agreeing with his outlook on life. And if you get a chance come visit Ireland, I'd recommend places like Donegal, Cork and even Dublin. I'm so glad I subscribed to your channel, your passion for comics is very very clear.

If you ever do visit Ireland, be sure to check out some Irish comics, granted our comics aren't all that amazing yet, but there are one or two stand out Irish comics out there, there is one Irish comic based on the fable of Brian Boru, I think it's called Chluainn Na Dearg, which roughly translates to Red Wolf. I give it another ten years before Ireland finds its footing with comics, right now Irish comic creators are either going with historical comics, or superhero stuff, which is all well and good, but we need to do something more original. The UK had that same problem with comics, before 2000AD they were mainly doing war comics, then they got experimental with the likes of Starlord and 2000AD and then that's when UK comics took off. There are amazing Irish comic creators out there tho, like Stephen Mooney, Garth Ennis, and Patrick Mills.
Peaked my interest here with the Irish creators, I'm gonna need to have a look for some of those guys stuff. as an Englishman with Irish heritage, I always want to see Ireland succeed in every way possible...gives me a strange sense of pride even though I've never even been there.

Hobgoblin and Old Speckled Hen are loooovely beers. Proper good ale. Newcastle Brown is very similar.

Really enjoyed this video a lot...however, with the greatest of respect (If I remember correctly) John Wagner is an American-born Scot, who moved back to Scotland with his Scottish mother when he was a young kid, and Carlos Ezquerra was from Spain ...so between that and the fact that 2000AD/Judge Dredd were sold all over the UK means that those comics were not just 'England's comic book'.
I loved 2000AD back when you could get comics from outside the USA. All that's shut down now. Humor magazines, comics, comic zines like 2000AD .... Our media in the US is becoming very controlled.

What do you guys think is the better of the collected Dredd stuff? I have the USA 1st printing of the Complete Case Files #13 and love the format, but if the MEGA COLLECTIONs are bigger or better I'd rather collect those. I have a bunch of other random trades and stuff, but love the idea of the complete collections. Between The Judge Dredd, Savage Sword of Conan and the Complete EC Library, maybe the complete 2000 AD thrown in, I'd have quite the hours of entertainment in a big bookshelf to keep me entertained into retirement.
Some of my favorites are stories from Judge Dredd Magazine featuring the Dead Judges and Dead World, such as Dark Judges The Fall of Dead World and Dark Justice Dominion. I really love some of the newer Dredd stories like Mega City Zero (possibly my all time fav, if not this one --->), The Small House.
I've gone SO far away from collecting and what's out there in re: to Marvel and DC, but I did see there was a Hulk: Grand Design that Piskor did that I will be getting and I'm not sure if the IMAGE COMICS: Grand Design is available in print format but that's so cool, too, I want to get that as well. Besides those books and the holy-grail collections I mentioned I have no desire to check out anything that is current and mainstream. I love this channel because there's a lot of cool back issue stuff I find out or learn more about that I can go hunt down and still support the local shop.

One tip on opening beer. Here in Poland we use our hoee keys and cigarette lighters. BTW if you wanna cover an interesting European comic please look-up Thorgal with art by Greagorz Rosiński and scripted by Jean van Hamme.

None of the Virgin comics (Richard Branson's comic publisher) series which is the Garth Ennis ones.
However the ones from the 50's up til the eagle comics ones are fantastic.

Er... John Wagner is actually American, he moved to Scotland as a youngster. Not to mention Pat Mills input (no 2000ad = no Dredd, no Pat Mills = no 2000ad).
Aaron S Ever met Wagner? He’s as Scottish as they come. He may be born in the US but the guy’s Scottish. Let’s not get into an argument over Prof. Mills and whether he should get credit for Dredd or not, that’s been a deeply contentious argument for decades.

As much as I like people like Stephen Colbert and John Stewart and other American comedians who use satire, no one does satire quite like us Brits. Subtle but devastating. Still maintain my private Eye subscription even though I've lived in the US for over 8 years.

God I am so glad that the newer episodes have none of the stupid alcohol drinking. The comic discussion is second to none but it becomes more about Chris acting like an idiot while drunk than what we tuned into for.
