The fact that most of these films are just about the women being mistreated and disrespected but then forgiving the male at the end and having a "happily ever after" is kinda sad. Glad you highlighted how problematic maalai nerattu mayakam is! I read story of the movie on the Wikipedia and felt disturbed for quite some time. How this could be ok under any circumstances...i looked up reviews online and one of the reviews had written something on the line that how the film assaults your senses and yet grows on you and yet was not condemned in the end.
Today I accidentally watched .. My opinion after watching movie.. Yes it is completely messed up. In my opinion both the girl and boy were wrong.. But jammy's review give just one sided story .. My short summary of movie is a innocent guy becomes psycho after marrying a psycho girl..😕 I will narrate other side of story (Not justifying his action, what he did was wrong) A girl who is going through a break up is forced by her mother to marry a avg looking & innocent guy.. After marriage leave having sex she don't even talk with him properly .. she literally mentally tortures him. (Mental torture is equally wrong he should moved of marriage at this point) till this point hero is right girl is wrong.. Instead of leaving her he tries to impress her by being with her takes care of her.. Relationship between them started improving but on there 2nd anniversary he drinks for first time and loses his senses and raps her (which is not justifiable) and she tried to commit suicide.. She moves to her home and files for divorce.. He apologizes but she don't accept it.. At last she accept his apology not just because he tries to kill himself but because she too loved him.. She clearly says that I started to love u everything would have happened with time but on that night he rushed it and spoiled everything.. Whenever he is away she remembers his love innocence care but whenever she sees his face she just remembers that night. She can't live with him but also can't live without him.. After that he ask her to him and starts to stab him self.. she forgives him. But overall movie choosed a path were no conclusion is right

@@theraythefab3929 yes it's not true because it's a writing flaw more than the characteristic of the character itself. The characters had so much potential but nothing was explored. The actors signed for the movie are the best we have in Bollywood but their acting prowess was completely underutilized. I was especially saddened about Alia's character Isha.
Wow .. the Charanon ki Saugandh storyline reminded me of a 1960-70s Tamil movie starring Shivaji Ganesan and Jayalalitha called Savale Samali... Anyway, I am happy that a Selvaraghavan movie got featured in the Matlab Kuch Bhi series! He was really popular in the 2000s-2010s. He had a huge fan-base- especially men, who loved (still do) his movies.. I used to think- was I the only one who found movies like 7/G Rainbow Colony, Mayakkam Enna regressive and problematic.. In the words of Captn Holt from Brooklyn 99, "VINDICATION"!
But he never justified the heros in 7g and ME, even the heroine calls out his shit unlike this movie. There is nothing wrong in showing flawed characters on screen.

@@sravya7599 exactly.. 7/G and these other movies created a kind of justification for guys back then that you may stalk.. Harass.. Be however you want.. And the woman who doesn't leave you is 'the good woman' - kind of an image.. I was in college and then working around the time when these movies released.. I had friends, housemates who were in abusive relationships but kept justifying sticking with their partners coz that's what movies like these did- normalized flawed men.. And labeled women who stuck to them as 'good'.. Call movies a reflection of present day society or tools that construct an image of society.. Justifying and validating the flawed men is the problem.. Not showing them.. Even Dhanush's VIP- Amala Paul, a doctor, is shown to have become a housewife after marrying him.. I don't understand the constant necessity to cater to the hero's ego - by showing showing him as the 'provider'..
Mayakkam Enna was not regressive at all 😒 It was just characters with complex emotions being human. 7G Rainbow Colony had problematic scenes, but those were intentional. And Ravi Krishna's character wasn't a straight up r@pist or even a harasser in the movie. He was a creepy stalker like most misguided youngsters in our country are. Sonia Agarwal's character literally slaps the $hit out of him and calls him out on it. Sure, what follows with how a rich guy is bad and the middle class guy is good is cliched. But it wasn't regressive. The whole point of the movie is how Kathir grows into a responsible man. It is a coming of age movie. And if you think the young men of our society grow up with clarity and decency when it comes to the courting process, you're wrong.
Hey, love this series. Thanks for pointing out all the problematic content we should have been progressed from.. by now. Please add bulandi somewhere as well. That movie tried to normalize a lot of atrocities.. the list just goes on and on!

The sickening part in all of this is not the movie but rather the fact that film-makers are confident that people of India will lap this up. Had a positive message been given out through movies during the 80s and 90s about abuse, intercaste marriage,SA and eve teasing and all, I seriously beleive that it would have affected the whole society in a positive way. The awareness of right and wrong which is coming now, could have been there 20-30 years ago in our parents generation.
Even in the movie Bandhan….it was so weirdly shown that Jackie Shroff asks his wife that she has to wear a white saree and pretend to be a widow if she wants to live in the house and she agrees, when he is the one having extra marital affair. Even in Biwi No. 1…..Salman’s dialogue like, “I am with my wife for so many hours, if I am with someone else for few minutes, how is it wrong”…..it’s seems Indian men think like there is nothing wrong with husband having extra marital affair but if the wife even talks to someone or dances with someone, then God save the lady.

That scene from Brahmastra movie, where Alia falls down from terrace while getting Ranbir's stuff from his house, Ranbir calls her on the phone and she picks and talks so casually, for me that was "matlb kuch bhi" moment.
Every time I see these Matlab khuch bhi series I pray that Jammy remains sane and mentally healthy. Jab tak Indian cinema hai ye series kabhi khatam nahi hogi.
There's a song in the Kannada movie, 'Ayogya' which goes something like "hinde hinde hinde hogu...'' Which roughly translates to "keep going behind her, even when she spits in your face, keep going behind her, wink your eyes at her, she'll eventually fall for you". The music is pretty good but the lyrics are everything wrong with today's society.
Selvaraghavan’s main male lead always seem to potray the same guy. I wonder if it’s partly autobiographical! The extend to which he feels the need to justify such creepy behavior is confounding.
Exactly! Finally someone had d same thought. All his characters r somehow abusive towards woman. Bt finally that girl loves him anyway . So what he is trying to say. His every movie have a sex / rape / abuse scene. Somehow objectifying women as a sex toy. 7g, ngk, nenjam marapathillai, thulluvadho ilamai, pudhupettai. Acc to me , his only good work is kadhal konden.
@@sravya7599 In both Pudhupettai and Nenjam Marapathillai, the abuser is shown in a negative light. Pudhupettai, considering it is a gangster film, has to show certain aspects of a gangster's life and how he is with women, playing off his power fantasy etc. Plus, he gets what he deserves towards the end with the femme fatale stuff. And Nenjam Marapathillai is a revenge horror film about a ghost taking revenge on SJ Surya after being assaulted and killed. Although I don't understand what made him write Maalai Nerathu Mayakathile (that too directed by his own wife, which makes it super confusing). I never watched that film but after this review, I can't believe they end the film in a happy way, and it was released in Tamil. It's insane.
Bro you live in another India or you're too privileged to realise that some of these issues are quite prevalent and are correctly depicted through these movies.

The sad part is that growing up in the 80s and 90’s these types of movies were way too common; and many of the men I knew mirrored these male prototypes. For some time I believed this was how male and female relationships were intended to be. Jammy you are and will always be my favorite critic. Thank you for your eye opening content.
The fact that most of these films are just about the women being mistreated and disrespected but then forgiving the male at the end and having a "happily ever after" is kinda sad. Why do they expect women to act this way, teach young boys that "mistakes happen" and that it's not their fault? I'm just confused WHAT do they want us to interpret from these films?!?!?

Glad you highlighted how problematic maalai nerattu mayakam is! I read story of the movie on the Wikipedia and felt disturbed for quite some time. How this could be ok under any circumstances...i looked up reviews online and one of the reviews had written something on the line that how the film assaults your senses and yet grows on you and yet was not condemned in the end.
Today I accidentally watched ..
My opinion after watching movie..
Yes it is completely messed up.
In my opinion both the girl and boy were wrong..
But jammy's review give just one sided story ..
My short summary of movie is a innocent guy becomes psycho after marrying a psycho girl..😕
I will narrate other side of story
(Not justifying his action, what he did was wrong)
A girl who is going through a break up is forced by her mother to marry a avg looking & innocent guy..
But overall movie choosed a path were no conclusion is right
@@theraythefab3929really? You really compared not talking to someone or overall being annoying with Rape and Stalking and just said that it's Equally wrong?

Like he said she accepts him back just because he tries to kill himself which I felt was not completely true.
@@theraythefab3929 yes it's not true because it's a writing flaw more than the characteristic of the character itself. He had a huge fan-base- especially men, who loved (still do) his movies.. I used to think- was I the only one who found movies like 7/G Rainbow Colony, Mayakkam Enna regressive and problematic..
Looks like nagarjuna garu doing contributing to bramhastra script as well 🤣
