    You should watch Panchari melam, Pandi melam, and Thayambaka . Three classical art forms using chenda (from Kerala).
    Illanjithara melam: The Pandi Melam during Thrissur Pooram (one of the largest festivals in Asia with more than 1 million visitors.) is very famous as it is considered one of the best platforms for traditional Kerala music and the largest assembly of percussion artistes in any other Poorams(festivals). 100 Chendas , 75 Elathalams, 21 Kombu and 21 Kurunkuzhal is the number of instruments in each category.

    Never thought I would watch Dhol Tasha on your channel... But music is after all what we all love.
    Playing Dhol tasha is an emotion in Maharashtra, an Indian state. The group where Siddharth Jadhav was playing is actually a group formed by all actors. There are many actors who come together practise and play in that group. Dhol tasha is always a must during celebrations like Gudi Padwa(Marathi New Year), Ganesh Chaturthi and Visarjan (the Ganpati festival) and every happy moment that involves a procession i guess. Its symbolic of music, fun and discipline actually for every person who plays a Dhol or a Tasha.
    The sticks as you mentioned are held differently than drums is because they are flexible, longer and the tasha is not like an average drum.

  • @VeeeBeee
    @VeeeBeee 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This happens in Pune and many other places in Maharashtra State in India during a festival dedicated to Lord Ganesha which generally falls in Aug-Sep. The dates are fixed in Indian Lunar Calendar. The Dhol is the big two-sided drum, The tasha was the smaller single sided drum the girl and Greg Ellis were playing. The dhols are played in sync together (as many as 3 - 4 - 40 -100 or more) and tasha is more flexible. Tashas play variations on the base of the rhythm the dhols provide. Many martial dance types are performed on these percussions. Young and old practise playing together for months before the festival. I used to lead the first all-girls troupe for dhol tasha in my city, 20 years back - I am still a part of the dhol-tasha culture.

    That lady on the drums is celebrating the immersion procession of Lord Ganesh at the end of the 10 day celebration period. This is indeed a rarity as normally this percussionist role is played by men and if you notice there would be large number of people in the procession dancing to that beat.
    Just so you know. Lord Ganesh is the one who is worshipped at the beginning of absolutely any auspicious function. In fact he has been revered as a "troubles remover" for thousands of years. The strangest part is that even a country like Indonesia, a formerly Hindu but now an avowed Islamic state, sports image of Lord Ganesh on its currency notes.

    As an Indian who's grown up learning classical vocals, classical dance and some instruments (amateur levels), time signatures make no sense to me. I follow rhythm and patterns intuitively. And you can say double the speed or halve the speed or give me a demo and I'll get it. But if you say stuff like 4/4 or 2/4 of 7/8, I just don't get it. I get the theory of it but I don't get in real time while actually trying to play music.

    So the thing about those snare and drums, maybe you got confused or just mixed the two while saying it, snares are called Tasha and the drums, Dhol,
    About the snares, well this my observation and assumption, they have noticable lip, so you use those flexible sticks and hit them on the lip of Tasha and not on the membrane directly, I guess most of the time you see them play from the front so you didn't noticed it and wondering about how the stick is held.
    And Greg Ellis was using the wood sticks and was playing it like snare not as tasha. Just putting my observation in words, not that I hate it or don't like him.

      @@The-Progressive-EDM-Lover. It's similar to those two sided Indian drums.. but the main difference is the stick u play it with... On one side, you have a thicker sheet, and u play it with a thick and hard stick, which gives the sound of a kick.. a very bass-heavy sound.. and on the other side, there's a thin sheet, and u play it with a thin plastic stick, which creates the sound of a snare.
      Another main difference is, obviously, the rhythms.

    They are doing a Falk dance of Gujarat state called garabaa. It is a 9 day festival for Praying Goddess Mother Durga. Guys n gals dance in circles and their number may range from 45000 to 1 lakh+.. In spite of this,they don't bang or dash with eachother. All are so disciplined as there is a religious touch in this festival. When you just started this clipping of garabaa,it was looking dark because in this particular garba as per wordings,there a mention of full moon night. So the lights are switched off for about a minute and a half. Immediately, the dancers switch on their mobile lights and if you are watching this from audience there,you feel as if thousands n thousands of stars are twinkling. An amazing sight. I think,you guys must come to Gujarat,India, during Navraatri festival and watch this United Way Garabaa. 👍🩷
