Practical Kata Bunkai: Thoughts on Tekki-Nidan Bunkai (Naihanchi Nidan)

This footage was taken at a residential course in June 2014. At the course, all participants were asked what topics they would like to cover. One suggestion was the bunkai for Shotokan's Tekki-Nidan (Naihanchi-Nidan). I'm not a Shotokan stylist and the school I originate from only practises one version of Naihanchi. Tekki-Nidan is therefore not a kata I practise or have spent much time analysing. In preparation for the course, I familiarised myself with the kata and had some initial thoughts. On the course itself we had covered the process of kata analysis in previous sessions, so this was a good opportunity to apply the process and see what the kata revealed. This clip shows what we came up with for the opening sequence.
The video starts by showing our conclusion, and then shows the exploration process in order to illustrate the underlying thinking that gave rise to the conclusions reached. It's definitely a kata I now wish to explore in more depth!

Nice! Love the bunkai you present in the videos! I can really appreciate how you continually attempt to keep it practical! Bunkai always looks so fancy, but the fancy stuff doesn't work in a fight. ITS A FIGHT! Hair pulling, face scratching, groin smashing fight! Good stuff!! Keep it up Iain!

Get someone to stand behind you and lock you in a bear hug trapping both of your arms by your side. Now do only the first move of Tekki-Nidan, but very fast, and discover probably the most effective grab escape in a Shotokan kata.
As I guess but how if the opponent is stronger than us?
@@Br4m76 It works everytime, but it has to be the correct technique of snapping elbows up and lifting your weight off the ground when you bend knees.
This is a beautifully ugly drill. I loved it when you taught it in Burlington, Ontario (2018?). It's part of my curriculum now.
Positive there's a wealth of experience in this video, and techniques to learn from. But would love to see it in good lighting, and from different angles... and to understand the actions explanation better.
Thanks for the kind words! Most of the videos I share for free on TH-cam are not professionally filmed and hence they are what they are. Unfortunately, it’s not viable for me to spend a lot of time and money for TH-cam. Since it was uploaded nine years ago, this video has generated a grand total of £28.37 i.e. £3.15 per year. If I was to pay for professional filming and a lot of time was spent editing on these videos, I would quickly find myself broke and unable to provide for me and mine. It’s a little different with DVD, download and some app content as there is the revenue to support better filming and editing for those. However, these are free to watch (if not entirely free to make) and hence people “get what they pay for”. I nevertheless hope people find the content useful and I accept that not everyone has the resources to pay for the professional material, which is why I also share stuff here. However, as I said at the start, they are what they are.
Fantastic stuff. I find the Tekki Kata's slightly more awkward to apply Bunkai to. Probably because I over complicate things.
