Deportivo Alavés were handed a 5-0 thrashing by newly crowned champions Real Madrid on Wednesday which represented their worst defeat of this La Liga campaign. That was their lone loss across five league games (W3, D1) which still keeps them in race for a top half top-flight finish for the first time since 2016/17. A win against Getafe, who are a point and a place above, would certainly enhance those ambitions further.
Problems up front have halted true progress for the hosts with the defeat to Madrid being their 15th scoring blank of the league season. Alavés have at least been more dangerous in front of their home fans of late, finding the net in eight of their last nine league matches at this venue (W4, D3, L2), a sequence that has contributed to more than a third of their seasonal points tally.
Getafe won the reverse fixture courtesy of a solitary goal coming beyond the 80th minute, which now gives them the chance of posting a H2H double in the league for the first time ever. But recent form isn’t on their side as the visitors have lost their last three league games without scoring, which puts the focus firmly on their misfiring forward line.
There’s no respite on that front away from home, as Getafe have failed to find the net in four of their last five trips (W1, D1, L3). Resolute performances at the other end of the pitch meant they still managed to keep their opponents to a goal or less in the last four of those games, raising the possibility that this game could be a low-scoring affair.
Players to watch: Samu Omorodion could be Alavés’ best bet for a good start, as the forward has netted their opening goal in six of his last seven scoring games in the league, while six of Mason Greenwood’s last eight league goals for Getafe arrived before half-time.
Hot stat: The home team of the day hasn’t lost a top-flight meeting between these two since September 2005 (Home side: W4, D8).
