Tony comes across as a great instructor. I had some great ones too. I also had one flight with an instructor who almost made me give up flying. Sadly I couldn't keep flying but I'm grateful for channels like yours which keep the spirit alive for me and bring back some great memories. Many thanks.
Simple maths? It’s not necessarily simple considering you’ve got everything else going on in the cockpit and out. I find it reassuring for me through my flying lessons that not everyone is required to be ‘bang on’ with their maths. Keep these coming dude!
Excellent video, Rory. Your instructor is superb too, with precisely the right balance of intervention and encouragement. It also illustrates how reliant on GPS & Sky Demon many of us have become.
John Norris thanks John. Yeah Tony is superb to fly with and he explains things really will in the classroom as well as demonstrating it in the air. I agree - Sky Demon and GPS is a fantastic tool and I love having it in the cockpit, but I’m keen to retain / develop my ‘old school’ navigation skills. You never know when the battery will die or the connection will drop.
Great stuff Rory. I struggled with diversions myself during my PPL. I thought I had it nailed after a lesson of flying around cheshire diverting everywhere, only for it to catch me out in my skills test. It reminds me I really ought to brush up on them! Keep up the great content.
Tom F thanks for your message Tom. It is a lot to think about when you first do it and it’s always going to be a juggling act. It’s something I intent to keep practising. I’ll do my best to keep making interesting videos too!
Cheers Joe! Tony is great fun to fly with as well as being a very knowledgeable pilot so I've been lucky to have him as my instructor for this conversion. Thanks for watching - do subscribe!
About to start navs and this was very reassuring to watch. I'd been expecting a degree or two off-track would be an instant fail and ejection from aviation forever. Nice to see visual flying is a bit more relaxed than that - or maybe I should say realistic. Great instructor too - chilled and skilled.
Great Video thanks Rory, I'm just polishing up my in-flight diversions prior to test in 2 weeks, also just wanted to thank you for all your videos, they have really helped me and fun to watch too.
Rory, brilliant video. I shall share on my Facebook site. Diversions are really hard to do at first. Not at all unusual to see one struggle even when the instructor has control. I used to turn the air blue when my instructor made me do them! Your instructor looks like a good egg. Good luck on the rest of the conversion. By the way, I use the Pooleys NCP020 CPM-1 for calculating ETA on diversions. Cheap, and effective. Well done on the instrument flying, not at all easy, so very good effort!
The Flying Reporter thanks Jon. I really appreciate this. It was really hard the first few times but it’s getting easier with practice. Tony has been brilliant and I’m looking forward to doing some more flying with him when I convert into one of the 4 seat aircraft. Thanks very much for sharing - I really appreciate it.
Another great video I could feel the pain when diverting. My mind locks up exactly the same. It was so cloudy last month when I did mine I never got to use the hood. Another few hours and you should be done.
The door came open on me after my instructor demo'd a steep turn to the left I got a bol******g for not checking it properly pre-flight! But I had checked. It was a C152, as your FI said, renowned for it 😅
But unfair to blame you I’d say, they happen in all kinds of aircraft. I have a mate who completely list a door mid cruise over water with his ten year old grandson onboard. They were strapped in so just carried on and landed.
JP Hughes yeah, I should manage. They have to issue it by the deadline though so accounting for processing and posting time I only have about a week...
Dale Edwards I think it could be partly due to the fact the camera is on super wide mode which make it’s a bit fish eye. You’ll have seen my hand looked massive on the dash earlier in the video too.
Yer I thought that might be part of it. Looked like a fun flight anyway. Presumably this is just practice for if you ever end up VFR into IMC but are you planning on going for an IR rating?
Dale Edwards yes, as part of the LAPL conversion syllabus it says you have to have logged a minimum of 3 hours, 2 of which must be stall / spin awareness and 1 hour must be instrument flying. I guess it’s there as a backup in an accidental VFR into IMC situation as you say. It was a great flight. Tony is superb.
Well done Rory, obviously a natural! Any thoughts of going for your IMC IR(R) in the future, or are you going to stay with microlights for the time being? (Having just regained nay PPL I'm going to start mine shortly).
Thanks Kevin. It's definitely something I'd like to look at doing in the future for sure. We'll see what happens if my EASA LAPL gets processed before the deadline!
Hey Rory, enjoying you videos. Any chance you can mention my amazing Australian microlight flying and cars channel on your channel - I would love to do the same for you too. I really enjoy the content you provide. Thanks! Do you enjoy doing these challenges?

Yes, Tony is a legend and I’ve been lucky to fly with good people. I’m delighted you enjoy my videos. Cheers

Thanks for watching. I’ve always struggled with maths but I’m now a commercial helicopter pilot so it can be done if you put your mind to it!
Maths is not everyone’s strongest but it just goes to show doesn’t it!

Well done Rory, nice video and like the warm personality and nice attitude of your instructor.
Jason R Wilkinson thanks. I’m glad you enjoy the video. Tony is superb, really nice and extremely knowledgeable.

Haha I love it, your guys' banter is inspiring! :)

Great video Rory! Very interesting and informative and the banter is great. Well done!
Jodel Flyer thanks very much. Tony is a great instructor and he’s fun to fly with as well. 👍
What a great instructor
Yep, Tony is a legend. 👍
@@RoryOnAir great flying chap. Remember my hood on basic training for PPL and was convinced i was at about a 45 degree bank. Trust the dials! ✈

Glad it was helpful! Yeah Tony is one of the best for sure.

Nice one Rory. I miss the training flights sometimes - they were always very rewarding and good fun, too.
Chris Terry yes, very rewarding Chris but also very tiring I find. It’s been a really good experience though.
Great flyin' Rory! too bad you missed the drinks trolley ;) love that kind of humor. keep it up! Cheers!
Ha ha - Thanks Kevin. I'll do my best!
Another great video I could feel the pain when diverting. My mind locks up exactly the same. It was so cloudy last month when I did mine I never got to use the hood. Another few hours and you should be done.
Darren Weston thanks Darren. I’m glad I’m not the only one! Yeah, I’ve done 4 hours since this video and I’m ready for the NST and GST now I think...
Brilliant video Rory, also a fine understanding instructor...greetings from Belgium (EBZR)

“Ohhhh, me doors come open” 😳😳. That would of scared the hell out of me Rory 😅 nice job keeping calm!
Jet James ha ha - yeah, I was surprised but I was firmly strapped in so I wasn’t worried about falling out. 👍
Great footage again Rory. A mate has just finished his conversion.
Thanks JP and well done to your friend. It's hard work but good fun. I really hope I can get my NST and GST done before the deadline.
4 weeks. Hopefully the weather takes a better turn and you get it completed.
JP Hughes yeah, I should manage. They have to issue it by the deadline though so accounting for processing and posting time I only have about a week...
Looked rather close to that mast at 14:55 even for VFR :)

Fab Rory - I've never seen you so quiet ;-)
James West ha ha ha - certainly not a regular occurrence!
Nice job.
Plane Old Ben cheers Ben. That means a lot from you!
well done Rory good job
Richard Price cheers Richard. This lesson was great fun.
You need at least three hands to navigate. Do you use a whizz wheel whilst airborne?
MrAlwaysBlue I was thinking that myself at the time! Not while I was flying no, only on the ground. Do you?
I carry one but haven't done an exercise involved enough to need it airborne
Hi Rory
Which Bose headset do you use? I'm looking to replace my set.
Markus Witcomb I have the Bose A20 and Love them. 👍
So for a party trick can you juggle spaghetti?
Jed Wigmore ha ha - I’ll do my best!

Callsign: CRAYONBOX thanks - and yeah I’m sure I could do something. I like your flex videos. Nice not to have any airframe in the way if the view!
