I have many family and friends buried in Jefferson Barracks’s. Anyone that needs to be reminded of how important our freedom is needs to stand in the middle of this cemetery.🇺🇸🇺🇸

My Son, My Mother and Father, Grandparents, Great Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles, Nephew, and Cousin are all buried at Jefferson Barracks. I will be laid to rest there, with my Son when God calls me home. He was not married, nor did he have children. Therefore I will have the honor to be with my Son forever. It is absolutely beautiful there. Deer are free to roam through there at will. Eagles visit and fly above there often, as if they are the safe keepers of all that are buried there. It is a beautiful place of Peace and Honor.
    🙏🏻🇺🇸❤️🇺🇲🙏🏻

You are just a few miles down the road from me. Welcome to St. Louis!
You should see this cemetery on occasions like Veterans Day. Flags are placed at every headstone.

I too have always loved cemetery’s. They are so beautiful especially with decor out. Then my heart breaks knowing how much pain families had to endure having to leave their loved one/ones there. Kind of like a double edge sword. I used to feel that pain having to bury so many loved ones. But with a lot of grace I now find it peaceful.

I've heard that the VA is studying the possibility of making the headstones from some sort of polymer instead of white marble. The marble headstones weigh about 250 lbs and are 42 inches long. Over a period of years, they sink into the ground which necessitates that they be manually pulled up and reset. I've watched them do this and it is very hard labor with two guys using a wooden clamp to pull the stone up a few inches at a time until it is fully out of the ground. A polymer headstone would be much lighter and probably just as durable. The marble headstones are frequently hit by lawn mowing equipment causing a lot of chipping and even cracking.

It’s a beautiful place! My parents are buried there. I love to visit it. Veterans volunteer their services there. The funeral services are run like clockwork and the entire cemetery is very impressive. Make sure you go all the way up to the top so you can overlook the Mississippi river ride at the Jefferson barracks bridge. Terrific view!

The cemetery is 296 acres. I just looked it up. The cemetery was established after the American Civil War and has served as a burial place for soldiers from all wars.

Hey your like 5 miles from me. Right across JB Bridge. My brother-in-law and sister are buried there. It's a beautiful immaculate kept cemetery. Deer and eagles visit daily. And it's right on the Mississippi river. Hope you enjoyed and appreciated the beauty. My dad wanted to be buried there but, my mom wanted to donate her body to science(at Washington University in St. Louis) so my dad couldn't be without her so he donated also. Much love💖🌹. Appreciate all you do.

Kari, if y’all are ever in the Dallas Texas area PLEASE try to go view the DFW national cemetery. It is gorgeous, with rolling hills and is kept in up so wonderful. Believe me it will not disappoint you….

I did Security detail for the parking lot of the cemetery while they were having the ribbon cutting ceremony. There were dozens upon dozens of purple heart Veterans as well as former POW Veterans being driven there for the ceremony. I saluted each one of them regardless whatever rank they held previously and I'll never forget seeing these fine Men sit up straighter in their seats and scramble to return the salute. I knew (as they probably did know as well) that our salute would probably be the last one they would be alive to see. It was truly my pleasure to have honored them in that way. Of all the things I've guarded as an MP, or in my almost 40 years as a civilian Security Guard, that duty left a mark on my soul. Even more so than doing Security detail for the Pope (now a Saint, Pope John Paul).

it's very easy to get lost while driving in JB, so you are not alone in that respect. There's something very thought provoking about the uniform rows of headstones in national cemeteries. And yes, the deer, wild turkeys, eagles and other assorted critters just add to the very special experience of visiting Jefferson Barracks.

My Dad was in both the Army and Navy, don't know why or how that happened, and he is buried in the Riverside National Cemetery in CA. They have all flat marker stones. I've never gone all around the Cemetery but now I want to go see my Dad and also see the rest of the Cemetery. Thank you, Kari!

It's not uncommon for someone to complete an enlistment in one branch, get discharged, and then later join another branch of service. A person's service in one branch is recognized for pay and retirement purposes by any of the other branches.

At Jefferson Barracks,no matter which way you look at the pattern of the tombstones, the way they are positioned, a V is formed .The V is for Victory. It is amazing. My husband and I have our parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and great grandparents buried there. The deer there are everywhere and it is beautiful! Thank you for the video.

The VA Nat'l Cemetery located in Riverside, CA has 1250 acres with over 300,000 graves. It opened during the 'late 70's. I remember when it was a huge field during its development. All headstones are flat giving the landscape a park-like appearance. It's the largest cemetery managed by the Nat'l Cemetery Administration. It's striking to see a massive sea of upright headstones uniformly arranged.

Yes Kari, what you described is that you are being empathetic. Meaning you feel their pain, joy fear etc. I unfortunately do the same thing quite often. Sometimes it's a double edged sword, a blessing and a curse at the same time. Of all the cemeteries I've visited, there was one such place that was the old original cemetery for what is now a 'ghost town' (Old Spanish Fort) in north west Texas, that I felt such strong sadness and despair that I couldn't stay there very long. I have no idea why I would be feeling the overwhelming feeling of sadness and dispair but I did. I also didn't feel any peace there and didn't feel as though those entered there were resting. It's times like that, when being empathic is not good, and I hope to never feel those things again at a cemetery.

My parents and grandparents are buried at JB. We spent many many days there. Some historic reasons...at the barracks and we spent many holidays decorating the Graves.. We used to put flags out too.

You should come by the Missouri Botanical Gardens. There’s a guy by the last name of Shaw buried by and old Mansion in what would be his front yard. It maybe a good story. I work at the gardens and started a little while ago . I have yet to read about his story.

Our closest NC is Andersonville. Because of it’s origin, there are thousands of graves without liners. Do you or Josh know if the cemetery would’ve required liners at some point or was it grandfathered in? Graves range from CW-Iraq/Afghanistan.
