    I tried growing some eggplants this year, " Black Beauties " the beetles did a job on them initially and then I sprayed them with soapy water to get the beetles off, which was a bad idea bc the temperature was over 88 degrees at the time and the plants could not breath, well they survived and grew into a nice 3 ' bush, then one day i noticed the whole egglant bush was lying on it's side, apparently the one big " Black Beauty " eggplant toppled the bush to the ground, I picked the one big Black Beauty and made an eggplant parm. and the surviving " Black Beauty " was not only sweet and flavorful but so tender. Nothing like a store bought not even close. so now after watching this video I pruned of the appropriate excess and damaged eaves and tied the plant straight up to a couple of wooden stakes and gave it some Super thrive vitamins and I have 3 new grapefruit size " Black Beauties " on the bush. I will continue to grow eggplants they are easy and so tasty. Nice Video thanks for sharing your expertise. Peace Jix

    Hi Ron thanks very much for your informative video. I've been growing eggplants for 3 years - and came second in the local agricultural show here in Canberra (Australia) - but so many of my eggplants turn yellow and I'm really not sure why. We get plenty of sunshine, hot summers that last about 3 months, very cold winters (well, perhaps not by US standards!). I regularly water the eggplants and give them a fish emulsion based fertiliser. Any advice you can offer would be much appreciated. Paula

    • @krankywitch
      @krankywitch 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Paula, I'm just up the highway from you. You don't say if the fruit or leaves turn yellow, or the whole plant. So: last summer was a shocker, and eggplant don't really like temps above 29c - extreme heat turns the fruit yellow. If it is the leaves that are yellowing, it could be disease or nutrient imbalance. Applying fish emulsion too often can unbalance the soil making it hard for the plant to pull up the nutrients/minerals it requires. When the nitrogen and potassium of your soil are deficient, leaf yellowing occurs. A lack of nitrogen causes the entire plant to turn yellow, while lack of potassium will show up as bright yellow around the edges of the eggplant leaves. Applying organic mulch to the soil helps build up these nutrients.Magnesium deficiency causes the veins on mature leaves to yellow. You can spray a mixture of a tablespoon of Epsom salt mixed with a gallon of water onto the leaves. This will help them get green again. It could also be diseases - Blight or fungus on your eggplant leaves causes yellowing. Usually, the leaves will also have brown spots, as well. The brown spots will become larger, causing the leaves to drop off the plant. If blight is the cause, there’s not much you can do to save the plant. Think about crop rotation for next season’s garden. I hope something in this helps so you can win 1st prize next year :D

      @@krankywitch Hi Kranky Witch - thanks for your advice! Yes I agree last summer was terrible: bushfires, smoke and then a catastrophic hailstorm! The fruit turns yellow as do some of the leaves near the affected fruit. So I'll give your suggestions a try. I do regularly rotate the crops so they will be in a different spot next summer. Thanks again for taking the time to write such a detailed response, it is much appreciated! Best wishes, and Stay Safe! Paula

    • @usuextension
      @usuextension  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use water soluble fertilizer through my drip system (fertigation) about once a week, very light feeding and watch for deficiency symptoms. I stop fertilizing in August. Soil tests indicate phosphorus and potassium are not limiting so I try to focus on nitrogen. Be sure to follow state regulations if you fertigate. You need to make sure the fertilizer can't be sucked back into the water supply or groundwater. Thanks for watching.

    • @ronpatterson9846
      @ronpatterson9846 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They do have a tendency to have a purple tint to the leaves. If the color is extensive there may be a nutrient deficiency. If the leaves are a good size, the plants are healthy, and they are producing fruit, I wouldn't worry too much. Thanks for watching.

    It's autumn here where I am.I have some eggplant fruits in the garden tho it's past it's season.I was wondering does eggplant fruit has seeds in it,and can I pick them out and store them for spring?

    • @usuextension
      @usuextension  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have never tried to save eggplant seeds. The fruit needs to be very ripe--brownish skin on purple varieties. Harvest the fruit and store it in a shed for a week or so, until the fruit gets soft. Separate the part that has the seeds from the rest of the pulp, slice it into thin slices and place it in water for about a day to separate the seed from the remaining pulp. Place the separates seeds in a jar of water. The seeds that sink will be viable, those that float will not. Once you have identified the viable seeds drain off the water and let them dry for about a week. At this point they can be stored up to three years in a cool, dry location. Here is a link on this information - afghanag.ucdavis.edu/other-topics/files/seeds/eggplant-seed.pdf. Thanks for watching.

    You can use suckers of a tomato plant to clone the plant. Is it viable to do the same thing with eggplants?

    • @ronpatterson8751
      @ronpatterson8751 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've heard of it being done, but I don't think they root quite as easily as tomato suckers. To get the best benefit you would probably need to get them started at the end of the season, rooted and carry them through the winter for spring planting. A very light window for the winter season would be helpful. Eggplants are quite slow to germinate and get growing. I usually need about 10 weeks from planting the seed to transplanting into the garden. Thanks for watching.

      If the flowers are aborting the most likely reasons are 1 - they are not getting pollinated or 2 - ambient temperature is too high (high temps can make the pollen sticky and not move well, which of course is another pollination issue). If the fruit is aborting then it may be temperature again. Thanks for watching.

    Sir if I posted and tagged you in a video of my summer vegetable garden could you answer about 3 questions based on what you see in the video. I have zuchinni sqaush watermelon and cantaloup. And tomatoes. I planted to closely together. Ive been pruning the tomatoes by clipping only suckers. I really want to cut all the bottom branches off. The issue is all my plants fruits stopped growing. Several issues are at hand but i have used sevin dust at appearance of vine borers and squash bugs. Also my tomatoes some of them had bottoms of them black. They are so fruitful. I am not looking to waste your time or use you instead of google. Just aaking for any free advice. I have considered posting pics to reddit a website forum but wanted to try a .edu type youtuber first.

    • @usuextension
      @usuextension  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We are here to serve and educate.
      The black end on the tomatoes is called "blossom end rot" (BER). The technical cause of BER is low calcium. In areas of the country where soils are low in calcium they treat the condition by liming their soil. In most areas of the intermountain west there is plenty of calcium in the soil and the practical cause of BER is a watering issue. It may be inconsistent watering (plants get drought stressed between irrigations) or perhaps too much water.
      Most of my tomatoes are not the bush-type (determinate) tomatoes. I plant vining (indeterminate) tomatoes. This year I have planted all my tomatoes at 12 inch spacing. I prune and trellis them. If you have not seen my video on pruning tomatoes you can use this link to find it th-cam.com/video/dutDEelEXvw/w-d-xo.html and see how I have been doing it to two branches. When I plant 12 inches apart I train them to only the main stem and don't use the second sucker. There is a flowering truss about every third leaf. I haven't done or seen research to indicate if one or two leaders is more productive, that's just how I did it this year because I had more plants this spring. So if your tomatoes are too close together you could remove a few of them, or you could train them to a trellis, if they are vining tomatoes. For those few bush-type tomatoes I do have I still remove the suckers up to the first fruit truss and then let all the rest of the suckers above that grow. If that is your situation you may want to investigate the "Florida Weave" system to support them.
      On the fruit that stopped growing, I am guessing that you mean the squash and maybe the melons. If the young squash fruits stop growing at about 3-4 inches the typical cause is lack of pollination. Usually the first fruits of the year end up not getting pollinated. If the trend continues it would warrant further investigation. One possible solution would be to take an artist's paint brush and transfer the pollen from the male flowers to the female flowers that are open around 9 - 10 in the morning.
      Thank you for watching. I hope you are having fun in your garden.

    • @ronpatterson9846
      @ronpatterson9846 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@triple_A_rockhound There is a difference in the pollination mechanism of eggplant and cucumbers. Most cucumbers, except parthenocarpic cucumbers, require pollination to grow fruit and are pollinated by insects, which carry the pollen from male flowers to female flowers, which are separate flowers (imperfect flowers). Eggplant and tomato flowers are "perfect", meaning they have male and female parts on the same flower. Eggplants are self-fertile--pollen from the same plant (same flower in this case) can pollinate the ovules on the same plant or flower. Plants such as eggplant and tomatoes are pollinated by movement of the plant, usually wind movement. When it gets hot and/or humid the pollen gets sticky and does not move very well, causing poor, or no, pollination. Not knowing your growing situation, that is my best guess as to why the cucumber and eggplant pollination had different success. This is a good discussion.

    How to pollinate egg plant in polyhouse

    • @usuextension
      @usuextension  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've never had a problem with eggplant pollination. Honeybees do not like to go into the high tunnel, but there are plenty of other pollinating insects that don't seem to be so inhibited. It is possible to hand-pollinate them. Eggplant blossoms are perfect (have both stamen and pistil) and you only need to get the pollen from the anther (part of the stamen) onto the stigma (part of the pistil). Take a cotton swab or soft-bristled artists brush while it is cool in the morning (6 - 10) and gently move pollen from the anthers of newly opened flowers to the stigma of the flowers. The pollen has a yellow, dusty appearance. Good luck and thanks for watching.
