He was doing heroin, speed (amphetamines, benzadryne, etc), weed, cocaine, acid - *CONSTANTLY* by all accounts at the time. He would literally go without sleep for *two weeks* sometimes, his speed use was so intense. It's why you always see him rubbing his eyes in the clips from the '66 tour - he was completely out of his mind on drugs and no sleep. The motorcycle crash probably saved his life. Nobody can go at that pace forever - not even when you're young.

That was one the reasons that make him go away from the touring, in 1966. Apart from the amount of stress, Dylan was permanently stoned out of his brain. Whatever the drug he was into, cause iv'e read that was on different drugs (hash, speed and even sniffin heroin), it was the way of life that he was fed up with, no sleep at all and dealing with reporters and hostiles vibes from the public. The motorcycle accident maybe was a setup, maybe happened, we never know, but iv'e read once (and saw it in a tv documentary) that while he was recluded in Woodstock, watched the whole the D.A. Penneabaker footage of that british tour, and have a deep impact watching himself in that frame of mind all the time.

I think the reason why the ‘66 tour was such a hard time for him is not only due to drugs or lack of sleep, I do think it was the way he was looking at the world, he was pushing too hard with his surrealism and his creativity process in general, I mean for an artist this can be pretty painful. The accident of August ‘66 brought him back to earth.

I think for some of the musicians it is a part of their image and identity so they are discouraged from stopping because every town they go people want to "party" with them and maybe for the fans it was just an occasional thing but they don't care what that does to a body or soul being expected to do it regularly for years just to satisfy the publics expectation of them. After all lots of people figure musicians are only in it for the "rock star" lifestyle booze and babes etc.

He's right about those private planes. I don't know why these guys put up with the contracts they are given. Ok, if you're a nobody you have to do what they want, but if you're Bob Dylan I would think you can dictate terms. Maybe they rope you in to a six year deal when you're 19 or something. Still, I would think Dylan would be too smart to go for it.

Jutta Muntau I think a contract forces him. Usually manager signs a contract with a list of the shows: how many, where and when, pays for music halls, for advertising, media etc. Maybe a year later you know that already, then I’m sorry, but yeah, tour it’s basically a job with a contract. So in the beginning you would think “nah, it’s not that much”, but then it can happen that it is actually pretty damn much and if you just stop you lose money. And you don’t always want to lose money you’ve spent.

Completely burnt from the road . The road is a killer . You gota be made of steel . The toughest muscle man on the block could not traverse the globe like this guy did . He may be thin but he is made of fibreglass to do the miles he did and meet all the tour dates . It must be a nightmare . The thought of going back on the road killed Jackson
