I lost hundreds of dollars getting scammed with NFTs. Let’s talk about how and why that happened and what you have to look out for, in the crypto world!
When I got into NFT’s I went down a rabbit whole and started looking into countless projects, companies and roadmaps.
But nothing attracts scammers, money launderers and other shady people then hype and FOMO.
So let’s jump into the dark part of the NFT space and I’m not talking about the environmental issues in this video that are also very serious no doubt.
But in this story we have talented and unfortunately smart people understanding idiots like me trying to jump on new NFT projects not knowing enough and not being educated enough to see through the scam. But before I tell you how I lost my money let’s talk about the crazy way people push up the price of NFTs and artificially hype up projects by buying and selling NFTs by them and your friends.
Ok hold up how is that possible, I thought everybody had a wallet and an address that everybody could look up, so wouldn’t that be obvious if someone buys their own NFT?
Well yes but there is no limit on how many wallets you open up. So theoretically you could open up 100 wallets, upload your NFT over one of them, and then start buying them for what ever price you want with your other wallets. So imagine an NFT gets minted and the following hours tens of different wallets buy this NFT from each other for crazy prices and suddenly, an NFT that started for 300 Dollars now sold for 200.000 Dollars, must be something special right? If this continues like that it’ll be worth millions right? Well wrong.
Now you just have somebody still owning his own NFT and also still having all of his money. So now all we need is an idiot coming up and buying the NFT, thinking he now owns something worth 200.000 dollars but in reality he just got scammed with a worthless jpeg. The only one profiting and being happy now is the scammer.
This is also a crazy way for money laundering and tax fraud.
Imagine you have some dirty money you quickly have to turn into clean money where everybody can see where it came from. Why not buy an nft from a friend that later just buys it back. Or what if you want to save some money in your next tax report? We’ll just make an NFT, buy it with another wallet and then just leave it on the platform for a while until you sell it for way less to one of your other wallets. Making a loss because the NFT lost it’s value.
Since those are still all your own wallets you not only still have your money somewhere, you also generated a fake money loss that you can later show and write off.
So how did I loose my money to a scammer?
When I looked into several NFT projects I always read, you want to get whitelisted, which means you will be able to buy the NFT before it hits the public sale.
If a project has a lot of hype and potential to hold that hype for a while this is the way you can make money. Buy cheap, sell high. No matter if you flip houses, cars or NFT the idea is always the same. Ok but to get whitelisted you need to be active in the project community, so be active on twitter, instagram or discord. I didn’t want to post on my Twitter and instagram so I checked out the different discord groups. I found a project I liked and I wanted to find out how active I’d have to be to get whitelisted. After a short back and forth with the community I got a private message by the official Project account telling me I was chosen to mint one of the Nfts I wanted. I was stoked but also a bit surprised since the launch should have been in a few days.
But everything looked legit and I went on the minting website. Everything looked good so I thought it must be right. I connected my metamask wallet and sent the money for 1 NFT. Lucky for me it was no bored Ape and it “only” cost me 300$ but that still is way to much and made me extremely mad when I found out how I got scammed.
