  • A video about the New Straitsville, Ohio mine fire. The fire was started by striking miners in 1884 and is thought to still be burning underground today.

Thanks for this. My grandparents grew up there - my great grandpa was a miner for a brief time in NS.

I seriously considered buying the house that sits just above the cave a few years ago. You could just feel the history of that place.

That town survived on shine! The quality was known far and wide, so much so that shiners hundreds of miles away named their product Straitsville Shine in order to sell more of it. A monument to that history stands at the entrance to town, in the form of a HUGE still.

Such a beautiful part of the world! Both mine and my partner’s families were coal miners (from Wales), it’s such a hard job and so incredibly dangerous. It may have been extreme, to set the mine on fire, but when you drive people to desperation (especially when it’s simply to make a profit), these things can happen. It’s wonderful to see that the town still survives!
The music in this video was fantastic too ❤

What is rarely mentioned are the Chinese mine workers that were in the mine when the union strikers sent the burning coal cars down.
