Just had cataracts removed and replacement lenses added to both eyes. I can’t believe the difference. I can actually see again. I like how your optometrist stores his shells in his exam room. 6:12. It must be easier dealing with a shooter as opposed to trying to explain everything thing to someone who doesn’t shoot.
Ed L is very good at explaining optometric concepts in a readily accessible way, which many clinicians struggle with. Very much enjoyed this video but doubt there’s going to be any space in Ed L’s diary for a new shooting patient consultation! Watching Jonny react to his new specs brought back memories of when I was first prescribed specs and struggled crossing the road when I left the opticians as I couldn’t judge distances properly! 😂
Once again, one of the best videos I have seen on eyes and shooting and improvement. Excellent. I wish I could see Ed Lyons when I am in England later this month.
Funny you should make that comment a friend how passed away earlier this year had been a gunsmith for Boss I think he did his apprenticeship there he was very highly respected he used to go to the USA every year and work on American guns not sure how with we had quite a lot of conversations about sight pictures and eye dominance he said the USA understood the problem and the opticians were more knowledgeable than we were in the Uk so might pay to do some research at home.
Hello from Colorado. I so look forward to your videos they have become my Sunday afternoon ritual. And have added a trip to the UK to do a driven hunt on my bucket list. Keep the videos coming Thanks.
Love you videos! Very technical subjects covered with great production. I’m a US skeet shooter with recent 50+ year old eyes going down the same journey as yourself. Recently back from the NSSA World shoot (which was a train wreck) finally went to the eye Dr. and now glasses are prescribed, tri-focals WTF! I am envious of how your optometrist is a shooter and if he has any allies in the US I would greatly appreciate a contact.
As I mentioned in the first video of this series, this is outstanding information. Since the first video, I have started using corrective contacts when is shoot. I have learned that I too have a astigmatism in my left (off) eye. The script is not too strong but oh what a difference. I am experiencing the same things you are Jonny. Seeing the target faster, clearer and with detail. Sometimes they look like trash bin lids.
I never knew there was so much customization or corrections possible, specifically for shooters. I wonder if similar services are available here in Canada. I’ll be looking into that. Thank you
When I got my first glasses to correct astigmatism at 12 years old I remember feeling dizzy and when I looked straight down at the ground it seems that it was sloping down to the right. It was very strange getting on the automatic escalator to go down to the main floor of the mall as it was hard to judge where to put my foot on the moving steps. A couple of days later everything seemed normal.
Great video and update. I’ve recently taken up clay shooting and have been struggling a bit with discovering what works for me and my eyes. I have a weak left eye which had an operation for astigmatism when I was 4. My two eyes open sight is great however I think that I’ve been challenged with where my weak eye helps and hinders. I’ve recently felt that (after watching your previous vid with the Ed’s) squinting the weak eye works wonders.
Wow, that was very interesting! Being of a certain age, I am now noticing that my eye sight is beginning to deteriorate and I definitely need glasses for reading and writing as my arms are no longer long enough. During this video I found myself closing each eye in turn in order to see the effect on clarity and low and behold, the picture through my right eye is much sharper than the picture through my left eye. I think that I may need to explore the possibilities of a visit to Ed Lyons in order to get my old eyes checked out. Only problem is that it sounds like more expense, my wife may very well kill me!!!
Great video as always, so easy to listen to all three of you talk about what you're so passionate and so knowledgeable about, but what would the real-world cost to be having that done???
I would love to visit this gentleman. I've struggled with my eyes since a child and growing up I've become very bleary eyed in my right eye my dominant eye, the opticians tell me my brain has turned the single off so will never see clearly in me right eye again. so now I've switched shoulder and shoot of my left and I'm doing OK but always think how much better I could possibly shoot with too fully working eyes.
Ed, just getting into shooting in my late 50’s. I wear distance glasses to drive in but legally don’t need to, I have vari focal for the office and so glasses for close up computer work. Should I have distance or vari-focal for shooting?
I was just looking for shooting prescription glasses just yesterday! I have an eye exam on Thursday and want to get a set made for clays. Where would be the best place to check. Great vid as always Johnny!
There’s lots of options these days, some budget products under £100 with inserts from Evolution, full prescription lenses from Optilabs and then higher end products from Ranger, Pilla and EE. There are some videos on my YT channel which may be of interest (it’s very amateurish compared to this so prepare to be underwhelmed)
The comment about choosing prescription shooting glasses over contacts because of astigmatism was interesting. Do you think that holds for all individuals with astigmatism, because of the factor of the lenses rotating? The best lens options aren’t all offered in prescription options (Riact, Pilla visors, etc). I wonder if shooting with contacts and non prescription glasses could be more convenient if one’s prescription changes over time.
It all depends on how the lens behaves when on the eye during static and dynamic testing. One of the issues we have is the lens manufacturers only make the parameters they can sell the most of, rather than every single prescription that exists. This can be fine for day to day use but may be too much of a visual compromise for shooters. There are some lenses which fuse soft and GP technology and I’ve had great success fitting these with clients winning world titles after going down the Hybrid route
@@edlyonssportsvision9197 Thanks for the response! A really interesting topic. I've enjoyed spending some time on your channel since watching this video.
It's like the old joke about the city slicker who went to buy a horse from a farmer. after picking out the one he wanted the farmer said: "Now I gotta tell you something about that horse; he don't look too good." "What are you talking about?" said the city slicker, "That's a beautiful animal!" "Suit yourself" said the farmer as he took the man's money. On the way back to the city he chose to let go of the reins to roll a cigarette right where the road curved. The horse wandered off the road and walked squarely into a tree. Infuriated, he went back to the farm and confronted the farmer. "You crooked S.O.B., you sold me a blind horse!" "Well I already told you" said the farmer calmly, "He don't look too good."
@Ed Lyons SportsVision Hi Ed, besides correcting JC's astigmatism and spherical power, which is part of a normal sight test, how did you incorporate any of the issues found from your sports vision screening into the specs? Did you modify the PD, use mono pds? Incorporate heights to adjust for his mount position, did you add prisms? What did you do besides give him his full rx? Really keen to understand as a fellow optometrist. It'll also be interesting to see how long he takes to adjust to the fact that he wont now be suppressing his non dominant eye. Thanks in advance
Great question - I’ll be running a training course for Optoms next year all being well! Lots of interesting stuff to drill into with the sports-specific testing equipment these days
That sounds interesting... I will keep an eye out for it However, I was more interested in knowing what information you used beyond a normal prescription to dispense the specs, as the video didn't really relate the benefits of all the extra checks to the final glasses produced.... It was very focussed on astigmatism correction, which is corrected routinely in every sight test and dispense of specs, where required. I've tested and prescribed specs for shooting school instructors and other shooters, as well as friends and had no issues and was really hoping this video or your response would identify how what you provide differs, and unfortunately it hasn't on this occasion. I'd be happy to send patients to you if you can answer my query. Thanks in advance, may also help the audience understand the benefits better too
Hi Sundeep. This isn’t an Optom education video, that’ll be covered in the course. It’s amazing how frequently “the basics” aren’t dealt with, let alone the more complex stuff - glad you’ve got it locked in though! I don’t have any diary space for three months, but we do have a cancellation list which is pretty active if you need to send anyone across 👍
Thanks Ed, but I was actually more concerned from a customers perspective. I just happen to be in the same occupation, so my question was more technical, but essentially I was asking as some of the other viewers have asked, what do you give us in your specs above and beyond the prescription from the local opticians. There just wasn't any mention of anything but the normal prescription going into the specs. I'm going to leave this here as I dont want to come across as putting you on the spot or for you to have to duck the question for a 3rd time as that's not my intention. A lot of the viewers would've been led to believe the glasses incorporate all the results of your extra tests, but my interpretation is they are just the standard prescription as shotgun shooting involves looking at distance and having a wide field of view. Adjustments to prescriptions are generally required for Rifle shooting, I work with a rifle shooter in the GB team who is also an optician so i know a little about that too, great guy actually Thanks for your time and all the best
What would you recommend. If your eyes jump back and forth while swinging? One second your looking down the rib. Then the next second, your looking at the side of the 2 barrels. Lol
Hello Brian - the assessment takes a minimum of two hours and costs £595, quite frequently we go over but the fee is capped. The Vision Training kit is £139. Please feel free to email me with any other questions you may have 👍
