About Dr. Bruce Greyson
Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama’s compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization.
Dr. Greyson’s interest in near-death experiences began just a few months after graduating from medical school, when he treated an unconscious patient in the emergency room who stunned him the next morning with an account of leaving her body. That event challenged his beliefs about the mind and the brain, and ultimately led him on a journey to study near-death experiences scientifically, leading to more than a hundred publications in medical journals. He co-founded the International Association for Near-Death Studies (IANDS), an organization to support and promote research into these experiences, and for 27 years edited the Journal of Near-Death Studies, the only scholarly journal dedicated to near-death research. Through his research, he has discovered common and universal themes in near-death experiences that go beyond neurophysiological or cultural interpretations, as well as patterns of consistent aftereffects on individuals’ attitudes, beliefs, values, and personalities.
Dr. Greyson is the author of "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond". The book challenges our everyday ideas about our minds and our brains and offers key insights on how we can begin to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

When my grandfather had an NDE back in 2005, he reported seeing many dead relatives including an estranged cousin he didn't even know had passed a few months earlier.
So interesting, that's a "Peak in Darien" Experience and constitutes some of the most compelling evidence for survival.

Absolutely, he was emotional by talking about his experiences during the entire presentation. I believe he has a deep feeling about the importance of what those who study NDEs scientifically are doing.

The poor man has laryngitis, that's why he sounds that way. How brave of him to turn up & speak. If you watch his other videos you'll see he talks about the same topics with his normal smooth voice.

When I was four years old I had a near-death experience. I was paddling in the sea and my parents were not watching me but chatting with friends. A big wave knocked me over and I found myself looking up flat on my back under the water, which was fast filling my lungs. The only unpleasant sensation I felt was the taste of the salt. I had no fear. A bright light was above me which I took to be the sun, but it made me feel safe. The next thing I felt was my father hitting my back, and water running from my mouth. Little did I know that the man who saved my life that day would go on to abuse me physically and mentally for years. The experience left me with a profound feeling for the rest of my life that I had one foot in this life and one foot still in the place that had come to take me home. If I could have gone home that day, it would have saved a lot of pain and unhappiness. ?
And maybe you have made a lot a personal growth. You are who you are now, because of the experiences you mad throughout your life. I wish you healing for the emotional wounds you are still suffering of.
No I don't think giving up that day was the way. You are someone now, maybe someone happy and you have a life now and that's what matters
I think there is decency and good even in the hardest of hearts. Your father saved your life. He is the one who gave you his highest Love. Whatever happened to him to turn him angry and mean is not because of you. Try to find out because it begins the process of healing, spiritual awakening and Forgiveness.

I was blessed to be part of the audience when Dr Greyson gave this talk. Found him to be authentic and down to earth, following the facts wherever they lead. I have many questions but am a seeker off truth willing to follow the evidence to it’s logical conclusion. I hope he and IANDS / perceptual studies continue the research.

I rarely say I am impressed with any scientist whom others laud as “brilliant.” This man is brilliant not because I agree with him, but because he truly steps out of his former comfort zone. 95% of the scientists I have come into contact with refuse to do this. I respect this man and wish him well.

When my father passed I had a shared death experience. These experiences are real.
What’s a shared death experience? 🤔 💭
@@janiemiller825 ...the short version: this past June..unknown to me at the time...my father was dying. Around that same time, I was working in my back yard. I don’t know how it happened...I don’t know how I was able to see...but he was standing in my backyard...his back facing me. I did not recognize him at the time...he was young and I thought at first it might be my husband...but I had left my husband clear on the other side of the yard.
Next I saw a light coming in on his left. The sun was setting on his right. I watched this light slowly coming in brighter and it was so beautiful....soft and white with colorful hues. Gentle. I said to myself that I wish I had a camera. Then I saw an arm stretch out from this light and gently touch his shoulder. There was a being made of light inside the light ...it spoke to me telepathically and said, “I love him so much”. It used my heart and my mind and the love was an intense explosion of love...a love that does not exist on this planet. My response was...”I would never say that”. I think somewhere in my logical mind I realized this was not my thought. As I was acknowledging that I never felt this kind of love before. I was kind of ashamed.
As I was staring at the movement inside the light, I next recalled being inside a white sphere of energy with windows that had memory movies playing in them. No fear, no pain...just an observer. It was my father walking towards a house in green grass. I heard people laughing joyously and a child was giggling. Next thing I recall was as I was putting the wheelbarrow down...my physical vision being blotted back in. I saw my husband on the other side of the yard...in the patio where I left him working. I said “who is under the tree”. I kept staring at the tree...wondering who was under my tree. No one was there anymore. I just sat there saying to myself....what happened....something happened. Hours later I picked up my phone and found out my father died. I do not do drugs. I was not drinking. I was not having a medical issue. I felt perfectly fine. I don’t practice anything that one would consider dark. I am just a simple person. I love my family as most others do.
Not one day has gone by in my life that I haven’t thought about this...talked about this. I did some googling and found shared death experiences. It validated for me that it was real.
But...yeah...I know it sounds unbelievable and if the shoe were on the other foot I would have difficulty believing it myself. But it happened to me and has left me with millions of more questions than answers. But...wow...that love.
My personal thoughts... I believe we are here to learn and exercise love to help our own eternal spiritual evolution and also help others in there’s as well.
I know I said it was a short version...so I will go ahead and leave it here. Thank you for letting me share.

I have watched a lot of his videos and he reacts in the same manner but I think it's a type of condition, like people who break out laughing or have sporadic emotional outbursts but he is still an authority on the subject and I think he is fantastic to listen too.
I could be wrong and don't mean any disrespect he gets my attention every time! even when he spoke in front of a senate hearing you will see an emotional thing going on. not that it matters mind you, I wondered about this myself and there is a very good video on that hearing. But hey what do I know!
It's a combination of reasons for it i guess. He has a deep passion for his work, he has lived and experienced many of the stories and knows some of the people he is talking about, he could be a sensitive soul/person, and he knows he can reach people on a deeper level if he he wears his heart on his sleeve.

I think I get the same thing. What happens is when he’s speaking about the greater context of life the love coming through can be overwhelming for a human body. Just too strong to take without it effecting your senses.

These accounts fill me with hope. I am 52. When I was 17 my grandfather passed while giving a speech on the day of his 50th wedding anniversary. Most of his 9 children and many of his grandchildren (including me) were present in that Knights of Columbus hall when he passed. Inextricable things happened that night that have baffled me for years. I have since reached out to others who were there, basically to confirm that I hadn’t imagined these things. Memories are faulty, after all. The confirmation of these events over 30 years later was extremely validating. The take away, for me, is that physical death is nothing to fear.

The “inextricable things” that happened: 1. The grandfather clock in my grandparents living room stopped around the time of his death 2. My grandfather’s name disappeared from the anniversary cake 3. My grandfather sister, a nun, could not make it to the anniversary celebration and was praying fo him around the time of his death 4. On the day of his funeral, a gray, overcast, miserable day, as his children and grandchildren gathered around her grave to say goodbye and lay flowers on his casket, the sun emerged, as if on cue. These are just the events, the moments, I remember. My grandfather’s passing - dropping dead literally in front of us all as he talked about where and when he met my grandmother, that alone was remarkable, and unexpected. He hadn’t been struggling. He was smiling and animated one minute, the next minute he was gone. I had glanced down at my plate the moment he dropped. I still recall the unforgettable sound of his head hitting the floor. When I looked up, startled, half by the collective gasp of those who were looking, I noticed my brother-in-law, who had been seated next to me, gone. He saw my grandfather fall, and by the time I raced over to my grandfather, a crowd had gathered, my brother-in-law was performing CPR on my grandfather. To no avail. I never witnessed a death before, not until that point. My grandfather, who moments before was smiling, with his hand on my grandmothers shoulder, a man who mere seconds ago had been speaking about falling in love, had just fallen to his death. I heard a sound from him, completely unfamiliar. Someone told me “that’s the death rattle.” I heard my uncle call out “someone call a priest.” It was shocking. My mom was sad. She just lost her father. She never got to show everyone, her father especially, the slides she prepared for later in the evening. We never got to eat the anniversary cake. We never got to sing and dance. The evening came to an abrupt halt. My grandfather’s body was removed, the building emptied out. It was my job to bring the uneaten cake, which was in a cardboard cake box, back to my grandparents house. It was at their house, that evening, that I noticed my grandfather’s name missing. The rest of the cake was untouched, just the icing that had his name, “Wilf”, was gone from the cake, stuck to the lid of the box. That’s when someone mentioned the grandfather clock. And his sister. All these years later, it’s still so vivid, and at the same time, dream-like. I miss my grandfather. I wish I could thank him, chat with him. Ask him questions.

This is great. There is such a massive audience for the history of IANDS, MUFON, Transpersonal Psychologists that risked everything to explore a feild that would bring no prestige or glorification..... The Survival of Personality after Biological Death will be the the largest Nobel Prize ever.

Astonishing. I also think our earthly brain is blocking the mind. I had an experience. I was home. The news on the radio started at 8 pm. I coundn't understand a word! But I was OVERWHELMED by unconditional love. I saw a title but I couldn't read it. I felt that someone was with me. I told my friend who was cooking. It took about five minutes. Next day my mother called me that my dearest auntie died. Euthanasia. At 8 'o clock. This has left a deep impression on me. Now I have a rough time. But when I think of it it helps. My dad, trauma surgeon, said Pt. Coded. Brought her back. Next day she said she floated above and there was ‘something’ on top of cabinet. Dad got chair and looked at top of cabinet and found a discarded hemostat. He knew about NDEs in the 1970s and I’ve known about them since I was a child bc if this true story. Wow.

One way to verify out-of-body experiences in cardiac arrest patients would be to have a medical assistant place a screen on the patients thighs or shins facing up while they are having cardiac arrest, then turn the screen on to flash a random 2-digit number for a few seconds. This would be done while the medical staff are actively trying to resuscitate the patient so the medical assistant is not interfering with the resuscitating procedure. Now, if the person was hovering above their body, they would see the number and could relate it after they regain consciousness. Gather enough accurate recollections of the number from various patients over time and you will have your scientific data.
The answer to that is at 27:20👍🏻
@@ronnysingh4509 This is why I said to place the screen on the patient's thighs or shins not at some random location somewhere in the room. The speaker said "you are not going to be looking around to find some target." However with my suggestion, they wouldn't be "looking around", the target would be on their body. Most OBE experiencers say they see their body so what better place to put the "target".
@Jamviator The problem with placing a target there (on the patient's body) is that it's then not double blind. Double blind means that both the doctors AND the patient must not be able to see the target. That is what 'sceptics' demand, nothing less. I think your suggestion would actually work and would be "proof" for most reasonable people that patients really CAN see what is going on from above. But the sceptics
would then say that the doctors simply FED the patient the information later during the interview. You have to remember, that many sceptics are not really sceptics (open minded seekers of the truth) at all. They are closed minded cynics, who loathe the idea that there might be something 'more' to us humans than just electrical and chemical impulses across the synapses.
You know, there's so much evidence available of NDEs being something much more tangible and real than an imaginary experience, that I believe that even if somebody were to do that and succeed, the skeptics would still remain sceptics. Whatever evidence there is, they will always refuse to believe.
It reminds me of the parable that Jesus gave of the rich man and Lazarus, where the rich man was told that even if somebody came back from the dead to speak to his brothers, they still wouldn't believe.

I recently discovered how my privacy is being violated whenever I opened Google. So I now use Express VPN, Firefox, DuckDuckGo for search engine, Adblocker, Badger and Ghoster to prevent downloading to my computer or tracking cookies. I no longer have advertisements popup when I'm on TH-cam.com or go to Amazon or any other website. I'm going to see if I can purchase an analog phone as well. In lieu of that, I will make a Faraday box. Not paranoid, but I like to F... with big tech whenever possible.

I was in a car accident years ago and my best friend didn't survive. Im inspired to write a book about my experiences I had of when I was in a coma and him visiting me and I believe being in heaven if only very briefly after impact of the car hitting the tree (75 mph no airbags) I was recussitsted and was in the hospital for 3 months. My friend visited me in the coma and for a couple years after the accident. There's no words to describe everything but I'd like to try. Not really sure how to start..

I became a Christian at around age 11, in my public school auditorium when the Gideons came to speak and handed out little New Testament bibles to all the students. I hung onto all the red letters in the Bible, which signified the words spoken by Christ. Soon after believing in Jesus, I wrote something in my diary that has come back to my memory often:
“God is love, if you live love, you live what He is.”
I wish I could say that I have always lived my life according to those words, sadly not always because I am an imperfect human.
This video and others like it certainly bring life’s true purpose back into focus.

Dear Min-utiae, Thank you so much for sharing that wisdom of Truth. YES, God is Unconditional LOVE! Many humans can forget that lesson no matter where they learn it. The Truth of that is the same. I always put the word Unconditional in front of LOVE, because human being's love can be very conditional. They love you one day and don't love you the next. One of the main themes that comes through with so many NDE's is that ALL Encompassing LOVE, and feeling One with God and One with that Unconditional LOVE. That is a very important key to live by. Exactly, and this is not an isolated case, there are other few cases where the person having the OBE can see things out of the reach of his physical senses that can be confirmed by witnesses.
Exactly. It's really tough to deny a case like that. To completely describe things that they wouldn't even know from not knowing the people and what happened to them in places they weren't even in.
I am VERY glad he addressed the experiments done with the 'visual targets' in NDE-prone areas. I am currently having a drawn-out existential crisis, trying so hard to live in and enjoy the present instead of fearing the future or muddling about in the past. I've grown up a science-minded athiest due to my father, but at the same time, it didn't feel right, it felt like there was something more. I'm 28, but I've already had 2 midlife crises, I swear. There are compelling arguments on both the scientific and the NDE-science side... but one thing I see from the NDE side that I don't see from the science side is compassion, love, and enjoyment. It doesn't really matter to me what happens at the end of my life, at this point; but between the two, I would prefer to adhere more to the love, connection, and appreciation displayed by the NDEr's.
It makes so little sense to me to pathologize life, death, etc. We have a wonderful gift, getting to experience life and be in a body that has such a powerful brain. I figure at this point that, just Dr. Greyson said with his elephant motif, there are many parts to dying, and all of them may be valid. There are parts of quantum physics and electrical science that seems to come forth in the NDE experiences (such as beings seeming to vibrate with electricity, or there being some sort of hum-- quantum vibrations, which permeate the entire universe and are responsible for creating matter). I don't understand why the science community is SO OPPOSED to any sort of possibility of there being something more... science has been wrong about things so many different times.
When my dad was a kid, scientists said that there would never be robots that flew by flapping their wings. Fast forward to him buying me the FlyTech Dragonfly toy, an ornithoraptor... a robot that flies by flapping its wings. That was when I was 12.
I'm at a point where I don't know the meaning of life, what to do with it, what to believe... but I think both material science and NDE science have truth. There are so many intersectionalities, and the only ones who don't seem to want to admit it or research it are the classic scientists. And even if it is all brain chemicals, shouldn't the message of the NDEr's love, compassion, and taking care of each other still be adhered to?

I have recently made a presentation to my 1961 Dartmouth classmates (TH-cam = "Afterlife Presentation at Dartmouth"), and your book "After'" was so very helpful both in the presentation and the Q & A afterward. Also helpful was Dr. Jeffrey Long's book "Evidence of the Afterlife." as well as Bill and Judy Guggenheim's book "Hello from Heaven" regarding After-Death Comminications. I am now a true believer.

Hi Debra, I understand your concern, I’m an NDE and OBE, and I can tell you that more of as had been in this nothingness place that you mentioned, we called it the void, because there’s operantly an empty place , like a vacuum of some sorts, if this is where you were and that’s the only experience you had it maybe because that’s as far as you got, I’ve heard of other cases like yours

I agree with you that I didn't get far enough. I was being resuscitated on the operating table, so that could be why. I woke up on the table after the operation was done and the doctor said he left the others to close me up. I had little blood in me and I don't think they were aware. I was a suicide and I was looked down upon. When I was in the void I prayed everything I wanted to say relevant to how sorry I was, how much I Love Him and wanted to go Home with Him. I was of the belief that I would be punished and I accepted it fully. I felt no depression at all and I was strong and brave. I do know now that God Loves us unconditionally and would never punish us. At that time, 10 years ago, I was in a very bad marriage, my foster son had abandoned me because I was depressed and went back to his mother who proceeded to get him hooked on drugs too (my worst nightmare), I was living in a house with an evil spirit in it, and I had lost a great job. I felt like a loser even though I tried my best. Jesus knows this and I am so grateful He sent me back, allowed me to live because I shouldn't have made it. My beloved brother needed me and I was back to continue to take the best care of him I could up until October 23rd of 2020 when I found him deceased in his apartment from a sudden death heart attack. He was sick almost all his life.
I would really like to read some stories about others who went to the void; why, how long, afraid? I was not afraid. It was peaceful and I knew I had flatlined because I heard a man shouting "we're losing her!". God Bless you Luis. ❤️🦋🙏✌️

Believe it or not I was born a claircognizant and I've heard a voice now and then; seen many different types of spirits good and bad, and my mother came to visit and talk with me when I was in hospital once. A little while after she disappeared, my father walked through the room very mad at someone, not me. Since my NDE, my intuition has become stronger more and more as time passes. I have let go of many people in my life because of this "knowing".
35:00 The brain filters out and focusses thoughts. The brain does not help our thinking but hinder it, slows it down and focusses it.

Dr. Grayson. I will give you an answer to one of your questions that may change your point of view on NDE. Both Near Death Experience and Out of Body Experiences (Astral Projections) are exactly the same thing. What goes on, is that most humans have a hard time understanding how a body can be out of "its body" for perhaps they have never had such experience. Main feeling is to get scared, for it is something unknown until then. Most humans block themselves from the experience when they come to life, persuing it as a dream, good or bad. I had a sister that went into a surgery where she was dead for 20 minutes. When she woke back, I asked her if she had seen herself while being operated. She said, yes, how did I know that? She gave me some details of seeing herself, the doctors, etc., but until today she believes it was a dream. On the other hand, I know about NDE or OBE since I was a teenager. It came to me naturally, and still does. I forsee many events, including death but also many other things. I am able to do many things with so much ease, I am not afraid of death, and I am not attached to any material thing thanks to these experiences.
