    The black album is what got me into their previous stuff when I was an early teenager. I still like it.
    Even if it was the beginning of their going mainstream, It made them WAAAAY bigger than they were.
    People like me never listened to anything after the black album but stuck with the earlier stuff.

      People were accusing Metallica for going "mainstream" for years and got mad when they made their first music video with One from AJFA. For an album being a "debacle" (the black album), it has sold over 30 million records worldwide. This video is rubbish.

    I remember 3 friends driving an hour and a half to buy this album in Tucson. A friend got it and I got Pantera's Vulgar Display Of Power. We drove back and put in the Black Album. Enter Sandman, ok, but the rest of the album was lite wth? Maybe Holier Than Thou was remotely close to their sound. My friend told me to give him my tape/cd? Don't remember. We listened to that all the way back instead.

      @@DEFKONSIXTYSIXlml Exactly my point. There were songs on that album about nuclear war, death by electrocution, un-aliving yourself, the tenth plague in Egypt, and a fictional monster. Yet because a major label signed them some fans said "HUR DUR SELLOUTS".
      Cliff famously referenced this in an interview that's on the Cliff 'Em All video when they were called sellouts again in 1986:
      "We do what we wanna do. If they consider that selling out...then whatever."
      The point is, some people have been calling Metallica sellouts for decades. This is nothing new.

    • @DEFKONSIXTYSIXlml

      Absolutely there was a fever pitch demand for high fidelity CD quality level of production that would fit every air pocket available in the end result but that was just a misguided futurology hype that most people in the industry couldn't fathom the intricacies of it and just went full blind worship of the promise of sales solely based on production values

  • @t_bone12571
    @t_bone12571 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    It was funny at the time to see people who used to crap on me verbally for liking Metallica's four albums before the Black Album turning into "fans" once that album sold big. I had a love/hate relationship with TBA not long after it dropped, loved the production value but found the songs lacking given their older material. Those guys (Metallica) fully embraced the rock star mentality afterwards too, which was a bit on the nose too. Flew in the face of what they established to sell a ton of records commercially, which they probably could have done by sticking to their Thrash roots. Most groups had to have a hit single or album to survive, so losing their old sound was a necessity for commercial "success". Excuse the half-awake rant, I've even lost myself here.

    Your first like is from your favorite opponent and (semi) collaborator, Jason! 😜 I would have loved it if TH-cam allowed for loving videos and not just comments. Really good job: I'm impressed you threw this together so quick. Ironically, save for us having different opinions on the Black Album, I agree with at least 75% of what you said in the video. And for the record, I was throwing shade at post Steve Clark Def Leppard. In the same way I've defended the Black Album, I've defended Hysteria to many a pitchfork-wielding metalhead. Sure, it's nowhere near as good as the first three Def Lep albums, but it's a solid and innovative pop rock album (almost mirrors what I had to say about the Black Album, huh?). I appreciate your sense of humor and passion for music (another area where we are very much aligned). Plus, you have convinced me that Lars was madly in love with Axl and selling out was all a ploy to get closer to him. It's kind of a beautiful story when you think about it.😍 I also enjoy the Mofos of Metal group: it's a gonzo and freaky scene and that's what a rock 'n' roll hangout should be like (although I'm keeping an eye on a few of those kids in the trench coats). Rock on, brother. PS - Where can I get a plush "Don't Tread on Me" snake? It's adorable...!! 🐍

      Black Album is a great Rock album, but it is definitely not a Thrash album or anything even near the same vibe as MegaDave's song writing on Kill 'Em All or as either the Ride The Lightning or Master Of Puppets classics with undeniable Cliff Burton influence on song composition. ...And Justice For All was alright, favorite track Eye Of The Beholder, but for they screwed over Jason Newsted in mixing production by lowering bass levels. The Metallica Black album was a big disappointment onmy first hearing and listening to it in the car on the ride home from Dr. Disc Record Store in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

      @@abfkwbdkdmggfilw-uv5bn nothing to do with feeling superior. The album was ok to listen to initially but then it became apparent that is was too simple, dumbed down for mass consumption. This is why I'm not a fan of most radio rock bands like Nickelback, Creed, Disturbed, Godsmack etc etc Metallica went from giving us real meaty technical and poetic orchestrated metal to 4x4 shallow candy rock. They were never known to do such basic mainstream before that. We had no warning... To us that lived at a time when they were kings of Thrash it was all very odd and unexpected. They never recovered that genuine unique ability after 1991 so it's a tragic loss for those of us that were fanatics

    Bob Rock didn't kill metal in 1990. Grunge killed metal for a good ten plus years, but the old masters brought it back. But sadly very few decent new bands were coming through compared to the 80s.
    Metallica metallica was a great album. Over polished and over produced yes but still sounds fucking great! I've been on the hate the Post And Justice for all Metallica bandwagon before and as a kid it sucked!! Then load and re load were even worse at the time. But now 30 years on I love those albums for what they are. Different. And listen Metallica could still always play Puppets and Harvester of Sorrow or Seak and Destroy live and still fast as fuck. Proving they could still thrash they just decided not to until Death Magnetic. The Black Album and the Loads were good. Nowhere near as good as And Justice for all, Puppets and all before. Now if we're gonna hate on the Tally's then St Anger and Lulu were and still are dog shite! Just thank god in heaven that through all this crap one band remained the same through good and bad times the mighty Steve Harris and Iron Maiden kept us all sane. As you were.
