10.11.1954 England 3-2 Wales (2 goals)
He was a class player, available wherever he is, deadly striker. Billy Wright put up a great effort restricting him to the minimum. Bit he still scored both of Wales goal. He wasted chances too much in this match, which is really unusual for him to do. Billy Wright praised him as "The finest 'Modern' center forward I've ever met". What a compliment!
Roy Bentley became Swans manager! I saw Ivor 's testimonial at the Vetch.Great to have straightforward commentary!
Check out Charles 's autobiography ' King John' .At Leeds his manager Major Buckley made him jump and head the crossbar to improve his jumping and heading!!!!
Seen John Charles play is first game for Merthyr Town 1-0 win against Bury Town, He was 38 years old. Could play in any position position. Seen many a good game. FAC Replay against Macclesfield Town at Merthyr early seventies wseventies, Won 3-2.
Watching that gamde you have to realise they were playing with a heavy leather ball yet that second goal Charles scored was top class. I only saw John Charles play once but he switched in that game from centre half to centre forward and scored the winning goal for Leeds, Never got booked or sent off when he played in Italy which was one hell of an achievement considering the brutal defensive way the Italians played in those days.
Footballs have been the same size and weight since the 1930s. the materials change and the number of panels but its wrong to say they were using a heavier ball.
I don't know much about the technical side of footballs but I am 72 , played 22 years and recently at a non league game kicked the ball back to the keeper , just a wee dig it got to the centre spot roughly it was like a balloon or should I say felt like it
Allchurch really catches the eye here.
I found the ball control of Ivor Allchurch very impressive considering the conditions and the like, while it appeared we only saw the magic of Stanley Matthews for a brief few seconds. The class of Kenneth Wolstenholme as a commentator, has IMHO rarely been surpassed.
Loved the old clip - 20 years later and I played against him when he was player manager of Merthyr Tydfil. Still a giant of a guy but fortunately for me he was 20 years older. The supporters loved him down there.
That was a very good Wales 🏴 side that England 🏴 had to beat back then & Ivor Allchurch & John Charles were World Class. England rose to it to win 3-2. Plus some Stan Matthews magic was always going to surface at some point. The game from the hilites looked scrappy but a lot of individual brilliant moments on both sides.

Never saw him play but my Dad believed John Charles was the best British player he had ever seen.
Ah!!the memories, before he went to Italy in particular.Never quite the same after he came back, but still a wonderful player and a gentleman.
Amazing. How on earth did Wales make all those chances and lose! I wasn't born until 1956 yet I saw Ivor Allchurch play in the first League game I watched, Swansea Town v Reading in 1966! And by an odd coincidence only a couple of years later Roy Bentley became the Swansea manager.
One of the greatest ever player's the legendary John Charles a master class R.I.P king 👑 John marching on together we all love Leeds 🦚🇮🇨🤍💛💙
Now I'm sure this generation would disagree, but make no mistake these fellas could play& had plenty of ability.
Playing with a hard leather ball on footbal fields often resembling something set aside for Cows& Sheep. Wearing heavy toed Boots ( many players never wore ' Shin guards)' so when u got kicked u knew about it,and the game was played in a very physical manner and pretty much most young men played at some level,so the competition was stiff.
So with those points made,u had to be useful to play at the Pro level.
Where was this game played? 🤔
Wembley. Thank you for the comment.
I thought Charles looked quite clumsy. But he wasn't at the top of his game in '54.If Wales had been better managed and taken players(namely Tapscott and Ford) instead of big wig hangers on to the '58 world cup they might have done even better.Brazil only just made it past an injury depleted Wales remember
I don't know how old you are but believe me he was top top class
@johnbarclay5964 66.And I saw him play for Hereford in '68 Welsh cup final.I wasn't disputing he was one of the greatest by the time he got to Italy, just that in this game the were some clumsy moments and misses.Clearly a rough diamond....Thought Alchurch looked good.
Poor Ray Wood in goal doesn’t get a mention .
Don't be daft. Charles showed great movement - stretching Wright and co - was a great out ball, AND held the ball up well. He played some really cute passes, which showed his refined technique. He was easily the greatest big man ever to play the game.
@elspencer6334 I can personally back that up , a gentleman on the park and off
Decepcionante partido de Shack
Saw him play in a friendly against derby county for merthyr who in those days were in the old southern leage he headed the ball from the edge of the penalty and it hit the crossbar with the goalkeeper helpless it was in the early 70 teas
Played under him at Merthyr not only a GREAT centre and centre half but a great man in his family also
Wales were World Cup Quarter Finalists four years later. You can see why. Lost to the eventual winners Brazil.
