@Braedon Laundrie Sounds to me like he's saying that singers have very individual voices if you listen closely (and if they're not autotuned to death - per me), so both of them, Dennis and Lawrence, sound like themselves and not each other. It's like all the people saying Arnold Pineyda sounds just like Steve Perry, but he doesn't if you really listen, and why would you want him to? Better to be the best you than a pale imitation of someone else!

He’s totally right, you can never truly replace a singer. Journey is another band that has seen this same situation. You can replace the singer in the band, but not the voice. There is only one Steve Perry just like there’s only one Dennis DeYoung.
I’m a fan of Gowan, I think he’s awesome. He’s done an amazing job with Styx. He’s not Dennis, but he’s not trying to be.
Just listen to the studio re-recordings on their “Regeneration” album. He’s not at all trying to copy Dennis.
Lawrence has a unique style, and he does the music justice.

    • @Felice_Enellen
      @Felice_Enellen ปีที่แล้ว +2

I dunno, Arnel Pineda has done an outstanding job matching Perry's sound. The only times it bothers me is when he does stuff slightly differently on purpose to make the performances his own, which I wish he wouldn't do, but it's his life and his job and who am I tell tell him how to do it. At least he's there performing the music instead of letting it rot.
It's a pretty rare match though, to be fair. They had to find him in the Philippines, ffs.
Also, on the bright side, he's much younger than Perry at this point, which means he's still gonna be able to sing well in concert for years to come, while Perry's gonna be hitting that always-lowering ceiling of his range that all singers hit eventually.

Roger fired Robbie Wyckoff for playing the 2016 Republican Convention and Robbie sang Gilmour's parts with power and justice (his singing of The Wall, Dark Side and Dogs was great he should have sang the title cut to WYWH but Roger's ego said otherwise). David Gilmour you can't replace singing wise. David took over singing Shine On after Roger left and David modifies some notes as he knows his range and limits.

Maybe Lawrence Gowan has improved since I last saw Styx in concert back around 2008. But during that performance, he was trying VERY much to sound like Dennis, from pronunciations to little inflections that were trademarks of Dennis DeYoung's sound. Unfortunately, his voice, though very good, was missing a certain edge that is unique to Dennis' voice, so the harmonies seemed a bit off. Then a few years later, I heard Dennis in concert with his new band, and their harmonies actually sounded more like classic Styx than the current Styx lineup!

In any of the Styx concert videos I’ve seen since DeYoung left the band, I’ve never heard Larry Gowan “trying to sound like” Dennis DeYoung.
Gowan was a singer-songwriter in his own right long before he ever played with Styx; any Canadian that was listening to commercial radio in the 80’s can tell you that Larry Gowan (at the time, he was known simply as “Gowan”) had notable success as a solo artist, releasing several singles (“Criminal Mind”, “Moonlight Desires) and two albums that did very well in Canada and The UK.
While it’s reasonable to expect Larry Gowan to capture the “general vibe” of DeYoung’s vocal melody and delivery when he’s singing songs like “Lady”, he’s not mimicking DeYoung’s voice, he’s not even trying to, and I doubt very much that the other guys in Styx ever told him that he needed to sound just like DeYoung to be in the band.
In terms of what went down to cause the split between Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw, or the other members of the band, there are likely three sides to that story… DeYoung’s side, Shaw and Young’s side…and the actual truth, which we may never know.
And, I don’t think that any of it matters much these days, anyway, as DeYoung is touring on his own, and Styx with Shaw, Young, Panozzo and Gowan seem to be doing okay as well, and I doubt that the band’s revenue from ticket sales would show all that much of an increase if DeYoung joined them again…nor do I think that the current version of Styx is doing any worse with Larry Gowan, or with the other musicians who tour with the band who aren’t original members, either.
    IMHO.

He's right in the fact that the voice is "the voice" and can never be copied perfectly. Same goes for so many singers. You can always replace a guitarist but the voice is almost impossible to copy.
On the other hand the band booted Dennis out for good reasons. The man's ego is so enormous, just like his over the top approach in the majority of his songs. Dennis is the reason I stopped listening to Styx after the 70's. The majority of his songs seemed so much alike and almost always felt like they were over dramatized. Not every song needs to be an anthem, yet it seems like so many of Dennis' songs lean that way.

I’ve seen Styx live a couple of times, both with Gowan, and they were awesome shows. I would have loved to have seen them at least once with Dennis, but know that’ll never happen.
The reason Styx still works as well, if not better, with Gowan is because they’ve always had a trademark harmonizing style in which Gowan seamlessly fits into. Because of that, it’s a little easier to accept the difference when it comes to solo verses. The overall harmony of the group is still so strong it makes the difference seem a lot more subtle than it probably is. I actually find that amazing!
Still love the new Styx music and miss Dennis less and less as time goes bye.

And Larry totally blew me away with his showmanship! Not to mention that I have never before seen a band have such a great time onstage. Add to that the stories of Dennis being an asshole in real life (a friend of mine near Chicago witnessed his behavior personally in a restaurant), and I will gladly live without his contribution to Styx.

Tommy and Styx tour ad nauseam like Roger Waters did. Many people who had unflattering comments about DDY said David Gilmour is rude, won't sign autographs, won't have pictures with fans and told many fans to take a walk (ask Geoff Tate). Now, obviously in a recording studio.....very different. I like Dennis' voice on the recordings. But I am entertained by Gowan as well. What it comes down to is the fact that these original singers get their feelings hurt when they are replaced. Gowan does a fine job replacing Dennis. The band sounds great and the vocals harmonize still to this day, even without Dennis. Oddly enough, my most hated Styx songs are the ones that were written by Dennis. The magic in this band comes from Tommy Shaw. When Tommy joined the band, they took on an identity that defined who they are as a band. I am a huge styx fan, being from the generation they started in, and then being in high school when their albums started going platinum, but I have to admit, in the end, Gowan brought more dynamics and variety to the voices available and I actually think a lot of thier later work exceeds the earlier stuff, but, of course their is no way they could be acknowledged for it at their age. It's too bad, so many styx fans only know the early music. The Mission, Crash of the Crown and Brave New World are all excellent.

I've seen Styx without Dennis many times. Gowan does a fine job. However, he's no Dennis DeYoung. The Styx sound is Dennis DeYoung's amazing Voice and songwriting and showmanship.

Dennis said in an interview with Mitch Lafon in 2018 that Gowan is a very nice guy and a decent man who is singing for his dinner as a paid employee of TS and JY. Dennis is actually complimentary of Gowan. Plus he said has handled the situation like a pro.

In a band, team, company, sometimes the most talented person isn't the best fit. As soon as the Celtics changed coaches and Kyrie Irving left, they now have a great chance at an NBA title. And Brad Stevens and Irving are two of the most talented at what they do. Fit is important, and Gowan is a better fit from 2000-present for Styx.

Styx would be in the Hall now if Dennis never was kicked out! No doubt about it! Not that HOF matters, since they do suck! But this band could have been even stronger for years to come with Dennis in it!

I have no problem with Styx, Boston, Journey, and Foreigner moving forward without their lead singers. No, they couldn't replace their front men in a way that would make everyone happy, but they seemed to have found that happy medium of being able to find those who can sing the hits with their own spin on them, all while still sounding close enough to the originals... Not easy to do. I've seen Styx and Boston with their adjusted lineups and enjoyed both concerts... Better than nothing IMHO...

    • @n8goulet

I would have been much happier as a fan if theses bands toured less often, and when they did tour or make new music, to have the classic line-ups that made them famous in the first place!

"A couple people get close " LOL, gotta love Dennis the Diva. I remember reading about him as a kid (as a DD and Styx fan) and he would talk about how he couldn't play softball because he had to worry about injuring his figners..IN SOFTBALL!! I remember thinking as a kid...really? He's like that? But... to DD's credit, And he sang a few of his signature voice tunes in the beginning but he left a big one out. I was at an outdoor party in high school at the house of this really cute girl I was so infatuated with and the song "Babe" came on the stereo and she said "Oh when he sings that first part of that song , it just,,,Oh". She was sighing right there in front of me over that song. So his voice is a rock classic for sure a long with his great creative works.
