    Let's celebrate Columbus Day by walking into someone's house and tell them we live there now.

      The land was not a state nor centralized, this isn't stealing as it must be considered owned to be considered stolen. The Native American society was lost, get over it. The March of progress doesn't stop because some butthurt fags feel bad for a failed people. Oh no, we stole the land from Neanderthals! We should stop what we are doing and all return to central Africa in apology! Was it a tragedy? Yes. Did the benefits outweigh the cost? Yes.

      +Thomas Stewart you must be white

    • @thomasstewart2870
      @thomasstewart2870 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Why must I be white? Because only a white person could see past emotional arguments into the true gain made from a tragedy?
      Um...I guess sure if we lived in a society that didn't recognize private property. Part of ownership and legitimacy is the ability to back up your claim. Currency works because governments enforce its value; borders exist because governments enforce it; I have property because the government backs up that claim and can enforce it. The Native Americans clearly could not enforce their claim. Would you be crying if a pride of lions took another pride's land? Would you be upset if a troop of gorillas annexed another's territory? Why is it wrong for man to do the same?
      The benefits are more than apparent. Along with bolstering the vaults of European, Chinese, African, and Middle Eastern nations, it also served to diffuse staple crops like corn throughout the world. These benefits resulted in the industrial revolution and the, the information age. I'm sure you enjoy your computer, and lights, and plumbing, and abundance. No need to thank ol chris columbo, you thank him daily by partaking in the fruits of his labors.

      "Would you be crying if a pride of lions took another pride's land? Would you be upset if a troop of gorillas annexed another's territory? Why is it wrong for man to do the same?"
      Because unlike the animals in the jungle we have a higher mind-brain development? We have the capacity to determine right from wrong--it is after all what makes us human ....Well, apparently not all of us....lol

    You guys missed the very reason for the holiday: the 1891 Lynching of Sicilian Americans in New Orleans and the subsequent diplomatic row which led to Benjamin Harrison declaring the day a federal holiday.

    I live in California, this is where I was born and raised. I work for 2 different school districts where I live. One of the districts opens up all of their schools on Columbus Day. The other district completely shuts off.

    And sure glad he came here anyway , and eventually many others came here as well . Like the Christian Pilgrims at Thanksgiving , who set up a government, including religious freedom , with laws . And who after a hard year , had a Thanksgiving to God with the Indians they invited over . And who also were Christians who believed on the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Bible . And later on a free country was established . Thank God our creator for all his blessings America .

      American Indians (Native Americans, First Americans, Indigenous People, etc.) are indignant because they believe they are the only people on Earth whose name was given to them by later arrivals. My ancestors lived in a region for several millennia and never called it Wales until the Anglo Saxons arrived in 500 BC and gave it that name; It was Briton until a Germanic tribe called the Angles arrived and then it became England. Russia was given its name by Viking invaders; India got its name from Arabs; Germany was named by Roman invaders; the list is endless. My guess is that we are all just people and the sooner we accept that the better.

    It is said that Italian Americans pressured the FDR administration to make Columbus Day a national holiday to avoid harassment by the FBI for possible connections to Mussolini's Fascist regime in Italy. By so doing these elements were saying that without Italians there would never have been an America. Boloney of course but that is the nature of U.S. politics. In fact HIspanics not Italians discovered America.

    Portuguese beat Chris by like 50 years and the vikings beat him by like 400 years. The civil wars main purpose wasn't because of freeing the slaves. And Paul Revear dint ride all those miles on horseback. History books are filled with bullshit about how great rich people were but, really weren't.

    Look. Columbus was NOT a great guy, no one is desputing that. He was horrible, but I got news for you, MLK wasn;t a Saint either. And besides, we're not celebrating HIM as a person! We're remembering the day he discovered the new land (or old land...or new old land..or whatever) . We're remembering this discovery...not HIM!

Invasion and war, this stuff was the standard of the time, not considered evil, this was normal back then lol. We have different standards now obviously, but back then this was the norm when you wanted land.
