I remember sneaking around with my first girlfriend, meeting after school to be alone with each there, hold hands, and kiss. we both weren't entirely out to our families but we didn't hide our sexuality from others around us. Somehow hiding was still something important for us to even be together. This song makes me think of how doing that made me feel further closeted than I already was.. feeling you have to hide who you are to be accepted.. it's ironic and it sucks.

I forget all the time that I had to spend so much time hiding, not even that long ago too. This made me think of someone I've loved since I was 11. We went through so much having to hide from our parents in high school, and sometimes it was so hard that we just lied to ourselves and tried to change. This song reminded me of that experience and how it's not normal. Thank you for this

Who are you and why are my eyes leaking!? Speaking as a gay guy myself you just don't find music that speaks to being gay in an obvious way that is also really incredibly good. I don't know why thats true it just is and it's always been that way. People, at best, have always had to use metaphor and innuendo in order to really talk about gay issues and this is the first time ive heard a song by anyone that just relates a gay human experience in a simple and brilliant way. I'm usually much more articulate than the word vomit that I just laid at your feet but i'm just so flabbergasted Im surprised im making any sense at all. Thank you!

I love this song!! Could anyone shed their light on the meaning of the last phrase of the song? I had thought that it meant something like "my mom is empathizing with my struggle, but encouraging me to move on as this previous relationship just isn't going to pan out any longer" or like "my mom also found out that we were dating and forbade us from dating". I showed my girlfriend, and she was convinced that it meant "my mother just told me that the girl I was dating has just passed away", adding to the singer's heartbreak. I hadn't thought of that interpretation, but I can see how she came to that conclusion. Does anyone have an interpretation that they think is close to the intent? I think it is important that anyone can read into the song with what speaks to them, but I am curious about the original intention.
