You can make it a bit harder by putting in a personal rule that if it is a movie in a series you also have to guess which one. So if it is Star Wars, you can't just say Star Wars, you have to say Episode 1 or 2 or 3...etc

Years ago I remember a theater that would have trivia questions on the screen before films. They would give the question, pop up a couple of quick print ads and then give the answer. It was a mildly entertaining way to kill the time until the film started and a clever way to get you to look at the ads.
I'm sure I remember a cinema or 2 I've been to that had something like this, you would go to website where you could put in the answers and before the film started you'd get a free snack or something. Been so long since I've thought about it, I was only a kid, but I definitely remember seeing them and my older sister doing the quiz once
True, but commercials help theaters pay the bills. A necessary evil.

We used to roast Stay Puft Marshmallows, by the fire at Camp Waconda

37 out of 40. But I did give myself credit for Hunger Games: Catching Fire even though I only said Hunger Games. Also, that Spiderman: No Way Home frame almost got me since you started out showing Tobey McGuire and made me think it was one of the first three Spiderman movies. Very sneaky. I also couldn't remember the subtitle of Star Wars Episode 8 so I guessed, "Star Wars: The Crappy One".
I was gonna leave a comment...but my experience was literally identical.
The year for No Way Home though ruled out Tobey's Spiderman immediately so wasn't that sneaky.
Just goes to show how much Tobey has aged since his Spider-Man movies!
"Star Wars: The Crappy One" is the official name of that travesty. So, give yourself a point for that one.

Great set of pictures that were just tricky enough at times. Glad you such to blockbusters so it felt like most people would have a nice realization when they missed. Had Ben Hur for Spartacus, missed LOTR entirely, and wrong sequel for a couple including Shrek and Hunger Games. I think I'm like 33 or so. Great quiz!
I guess it's an age-related thing: I immediately got the older "classics", but the more recent stuff were head-scratchers!
Yes, I have seen some of these newer movies, but they didn't leave that much of an impression on me. Got all the older classics, but there weren't enough of them. Too many newer movies.

33/40. Did not remember those shots from Avatar and Ghostbusters. I've never seen Love Story, Grinch, Spartacus, Butch Cassidy, and Grease.

For the Avatar shot, that's a chunk of the unobtanium that they're trying to obtain.
For Ghostbusters, the eggs cracked and fried themselves on Dana(Sigourney Weaver)'s countertop. It always stood out to me for some reason! There's also a Stay Puft marshmallow man in that shot. 🙂

The Ghostbusters one was a dead giveaway for me because stay puft marshmallows are a fictional marshmallow from that movie.

What I learned... is that I apparently have not seen a lot of the highest grossing films of the years!

Missed "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Shrek 2" and the LOTR movie. Interestingly American Sniper isn't listed on Box Office Mojo as the top grossing for 2014, but might have something to do with the fact it got released twice(?) in the US, once at the end of 2014 and again in 2015 - not sure.
Got most of 'em pre-2000, but missed a lot after that.

When in doubt, guess Star Wars! That's probably the answer to about 1/3 of them, but all different episodes.
I noticed that while choosing the years Star Wars took up the top spot in many of them. It might've ended up a little Star Wars heavy 😅

If not for showing the years, I'd have struggled with most.
I didn't count, but only had trouble with the sequels (even though I could place the series) but I did think Ben-Hur for Spartacus and missed Hunger Games altogether. I'm sure my "misses" were quite high considering the number of series questions there were.

I thought Rise of Skywalker for The Last Jedi one. I have embarrassed my namesake. Although it's not too bad considering that is probably the worst of the 11 live action movies. (The Ewok films don't count).
Easy!... only 2 Kubrick referances and some nice callbacks to movies from the studio's system up until the late 70's, the rest its easy.
I got 33/40. Out of all the ones I got, the movies that I know about but haven't seen yet are The Bridge on the River Kwai, Top Gun and its sequel, Avatar (I've only seen clips of it although I have watched the sequel), Pinocchio, The Dark Knight, American Sniper, Bad Boys for Life (I have seen the first two)
I did recognise Lord of the Rings but I didn't know which one it was
Nice work! Basing it on the highest grossing films of each year ended up being a pretty wide range. A few of the movies you haven't watched yet are definitely worth checking out, though.

I'm not into animated movies so I had no clue on the first one, but the second one was obvious to me. It says "Tour initiated" right there on the screen, what else could it be? When I saw the next one I realized that this was not about recognizing a movie from a single frame. This is a simple "Have you seen this movie?" test. For example, #8, that bridge is a central part of that movie. As long as you've seen the movie you'll recognize the bridge. I guessed the movie just from seeing the support structure and some jungle in the background, I didn't even need to see the whole frame.
I like the quiz format but is there any other movie outside of the star wars franchise??
Got 30/38. Never cared about American Sniper, Dead Man's Chest or the Grinch, and I missed _which_ Hunger Games movie it was. Guessed wrong on Spartacus ("Cleopatra"), Cinderella ("Fantasia") and Toy Story 3 ("Inside out" ...). Haven't seen Love Story (before my time). Movies 31 and 40 don't exist in my respective canon. BTW. Watched on 1.5× speed

I got 30 right. 7 of the ones I missed I have never seen, and 2 of them I had never even heard of.

Some of these I've never seen but still got them right.
I think I got around 20'ish, there were a lot of the old ones I had no idea, but then again also a lot of new ones where I was clueless, the only old one I got was 2001: A Space Odyssey and I have not even seen it, it was just from the screenshot and the year alone, and some of the Disney ones, a lot of the "new" ones that I didnt get was mostly movies Ive only seen once or obviously not at all.

The three finger salute is what Katniss does when Rue dies in the first book/movie. That is then done back to Katniss in District 11 witch is where this frame is from.

I didn't guess the right HG one either but if I had, it would have been from knowing the year. That helped me with a few of the Star Wars ones.

29. Haven’t watched many of the older ones and was unsure about which movie it was from the more „recent“ series like Pirates of the Caribbean or LOTR. They all blur together.
Missed 5 of these.. Aladin, love story, pirates? miss took spartacus for ben hur ((never seen either)) and the grinch movie..
To be fair.. haven't seen the Aladdin movie since the 90s, can't remember much from that one pirates movie and never seen the rest... insaying that, I guessed right on movies ive never seen too XD

Disney, Sci-fi and fantasy
I did quite badly. Good on the early films but in my defense I haven't seen a lot of these later blockbusters. Also, other than Rogue One, which I got, I haven't liked any of the
later Star Wars films so didn't really take them in. Series movies like Pirates and LotR seem a little unfair with a not very memorable clip.

34. Made some good educated guesses on a few that I've never actually seen, e.g. Butch Cassidy and Bridge on the River Kwai. Throwing in Hunger Games and POTC sequels without including the original made it a bit more challenging. Some of the Star Wars movies earlier in the quiz helped me get some of the later ones.
Congratulations, I really recommend Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid because it really is great

Either 34 or 35 right. Tripped up on a couple of recent ones in the last 10 years. Also called one Hunger Games but omitted Catching Fire and called Bad Boys For Life, Bad Boys 3. But I knew the first Harry Potter would be referred to as Sorcerers Stone.

Missed 10. Every single one from newer franchises. 7 of them franchises that I watch, movies I had seen. The franchises now are definitely popcorn entertainment, useful for enjoyably turning your brain off for a couple hours. But the movies themselves are so generic and interchangeable, I couldn’t for the life of me tell you which specific movie it was. Ok, Star Wars, but not an original trilogy (because those stand out), so….huh. No idea. Definitely a Hunger Games, or a Toy Story, or Shrek. Yeah, no No clue which one. The old non-franchise movies were way easier.
You need more Star Wars movies in there.

31/40 feel pretty bad but you put some tough ones out there like the bridge over the Kwi river i really only know that movie because Alec Guinness is in it and also Love Story, Spartacus and the Sound of Music were tough. Surprising enough i didn't get Avatar i thought it was one of the transformers movies. I confused Cinderella with Dumbo because of the bubbles and then i realized Cinderella was in one of the bubbles and I was 50/50 with Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and the good the bad and the ugly. Also never watched American Sniper and never really heard about it and my brain wasn't able to figure out that that was the grinch i thought i recognized the costume design but i was far off. Pretty easy on the rest. Declared Star Wars fan over here
