It’s scary how easily a fall can impact is after 50 - and usually it’s when we aren’t paying attention. Thanks for sharing your story - it is indeed a good reminder to slow down a bit 👍 I am staying with my Mum for a few weeks as she had a hip replaced and I am taking notes on how hard Simple things can become as we age 😢
You’re so right, Fiona. A fall can truly change everything, and it’s a reminder of how important it is to stay mindful and take care of ourselves as we age. It’s wonderful that you’re there for your mum during her recovery. Seeing these challenges firsthand is eye-opening, isn’t it? Wishing her a smooth and steady recovery, and thank you for sharing this important reminder with us. 💙😊
Yes! I am afraid of both! My grandmother was so crabby and negative! My mom fell 2x and it added greatly to her decline! Both so scary! Making the decision daily to be positive. And trying to slow down and be more mindful when walking and moving. Argh!
I hear you! It's like walking through a minefield of crabbiness and gravity! Remember, if you trip, you can make it a funny story later! Jody fell a few months ago. At the time, it was horrible. Today, we laugh about it and find humor in the accident. But we are both more careful now.
Aging is inevitable, but the way we approach it can make all the difference in living a joyful and meaningful life. Thank you for this real talk! - Lipika - Team Evan Carmichael
I fell twice and broke ankle bones both times in my 50s, so I get the worry that comes but we get through it, recover, and maybe slow down a bit. As much as it sucks, it does show you that we are mentally and physically capable of dealing with it. Great chat! ❤
Thank you for sharing, and wow-it sounds like you’ve been through a lot! Those experiences definitely remind us of our resilience and ability to adapt, even when life throws us challenges. Slowing down can be tough, but it’s also a way to take care of ourselves. Glad you enjoyed the chat, and wishing you strength and health moving forward! ❤😊
Love this new format. I have a fear of falling but I'm always falling. Had a fall that hurt my heel and shortly after, I had a fall and hurt my ankle on the same leg. Till today (after 2 years) , I still feel it occasionally.
Falls are the leading cause of life-changing injuries. I read recently that over the age of 60 no matter how great your health is, one hand on the rail always. Glad you are doing well but sorry the recuperation was so long.
I missed the bottom step 6 years ago ( age 57) and broke 2 bones in my foot. I was alone and had to wait and wait for my hubby to come home. Cellphone was across the room and I couldn’t get to it. Fast forward 5 years and I tripped over a brick (totally didn’t see it) and face planted. Both knees took the brunt of the fall. I literally couldn’t walk more than a couple steps for weeks and no, I didn’t go see a doctor. The worse pain and now have crappy knees. I was blessed to not have knee issues before but I feel much older now. Praying you continue to heal. Big tip - always carry your cellphone with you.
Thank you for sharing your story, Kathy-it sounds like you’ve been through some tough experiences! Those unexpected falls can be such a wake-up call. Keeping your cellphone close is a great tip; it’s amazing how little adjustments can make a big difference in feeling secure. Sending good thoughts for your continued health, and may your knees stay as strong as possible moving forward! 🙏😊
I was 70 in June. I was hit with a bad dose of Covid for my birthday. Not a great start. 70 you know your days are numbered. 60 was so different but the last 10 years have flown by. Great family Weddings, grandchildren, foreign holidays. Hoping the next 10 yrs will be as good but a few health issues are appearing and lost a close friend suddenly this summer.
Thank you for sharing, Mary. Turning 70 is such a milestone, though we are sorry to hear it began with a rough bout of Covid. It sounds like you’ve made some incredible memories over the last decade with family, weddings, and travel. Wishing you good health and many more joyful moments in the years ahead. Here’s to another decade filled with love, laughter, and wonderful experiences! 🌹💖
I thoroughly enjoyed your story because I could relate and I appreciate you telling it even though he thought you took too long to tell it. I’m glad you took that long and I think you. I fell once and broke my shoulder and it actually took four months to get better, so I’m glad you didn’t break a bone on top of the other injuries
@RetirementTransformed Thank you! Yeah, I think my balance is gradually getting worse here and there and I've got to be more careful these days. Not sure about doing any more biking, though, lol
I fell down an escalator years ago, it was horrible. I still hesitate now when I have to get on one. And, my mom, dad, an aunt and uncle all fell and broke their hips at one point before they passed. I have a two story home and have "missed" the bottom step a couple of time. I now count the steps (14) going down at night. I can't wait to sell my house! I feel ya!!!
I enjoyed this format. Probably more like just chatting with a friend. I had both my knees replaced in 2019….spent the year doing my own rehab and had fantastic results. At 72 years young I walk most every day and one day was just bookin along to my music and hit an uneven sidewalk and down I went. Luckily mostly just a cut up hand but I am always aware now and looking ahead. Careful, but not fearful….maybe just smarter🤪. Thanks for the content that you guys cover. First post, but followed you for a while.❤😊
Seriously, this is why when you get older, a rancher or single story home is a must. Side note: you look terrific Jody (not going to say for your age). Mark is a very lucky man.
I fell down my steps in 2023 and luckily only had a contusion on my left ankle….I have Osteopina and since I’m 63 I am terrified of falling again…and I’m athletic. I will be looking for a ranch style home soon. I do suggest if you haven’t already get a bone density test….hope you’re feeling better 💪and the new format is great 👍…..Nancy
I had similar fall at my home just 2 steps when I mopped the floor It took me 6 months to relieve the pain which is severe during coughing I started to be cautious from that time
@@RetirementTransformed one big major issue for us is Elder Care. My wife's mom my wife's mom needs lots of care and attention and that causes lots of conflict within her family and for us. Right now it's kind of ruining retirement for us.
So sorry to hear about your fall Jody! Hope you fully recover soon. I’m 61 and have a thin-frame so I try to be careful when I’m near possible tripping hazards… stairs, rugs, curbs, etc. I also do yoga, balancing exercises, and light weight lifting to try to stay strong to hopefully prevent a fall. Hope you both have a great day. BTW, love the new format!!
I have my Orange Theory gym membership on hold. I see that you like your light weightlifting but never considered yoga. I was doing mostly strength training classes. Miss it terribly and will be out of commission till at least February. I actually fell outside. We have a mini farm with three emus, two donkeys, one pig and a whole bunch of chickens and turkeys. Fortunately I can feed and water them daily but I had hired a person to take over the stall cleaning.
Thank you Jen. I'm sorry about your fall too and want to encourage you to try Yoga. Even on TH-cam to start. Happy that you like the new format, we will do more like this.
@@marilyndietzman-vx5tsI lady I used to work with before I retired is a member at Orange Theory and loves it and wants me to join. I would encourage you to try yoga sometime too. I’ve done yoga off and on since my mid 30’s. Its never too late to start. The poses help keep my entire body strong, helps with balance, and the poses even help calm my racing mind. It would be great to bring your yoga mat outside on your mini farm and do the poses there! We live in the northern part of Alabama in a residential neighborhood but my husband and I love getting out on the walking trails and being in nature now that we’re retired. We stayed in office buildings our entire careers so we are outside now as much as possible! Donkeys have the sweetest little faces. Do you have the donkeys to protect the chickens and turkeys? There’s a donkey on a little farm down the road from us that stands out by the road waiting for people ( including us)to stop and pat his head! Several mini farms around us have emus, but I’m not really sure why.
