- With Venom being revealed to be in Spider-Man 2 on PS5, and Venom: Let There Be Carnage coming out soon, I wanted to talk about my favourite version of the character and how he compares to the iterations of him that influenced him.

I think what made this venom so special was that it encapsulated the absolute HATRED that Eddie holds towards Spiderman

In his defense, Raimi Eddie was PRAYING IN A CHURCH for God to fucking smite Peter. Thats only really before he gets the symbiote though, after that its just because he likes being bad. It makes him happy.
this may sound weird but something I've ways wanted is to have a scene outside of the comics abou Peter and Eddie sitting at a cafe and just... talking for a bit.
Talking about the hatred and the anger that tied them together, talking about their reliance on using anger to fight their own problems and how they hope to one day grow past their hatred for each other and past their rage as a whole before they both just walk away.
Might sound hella specific but I'm a sucker for enemies having a heart-to-heart, especially when Eddie and Peter's relationship is founded on the concept of both letting go and holding onto resentment and rage.

My favorite part about Spectacular’s Eddie/Venom is when we see just how far gone Eddie is in the second season. He says and I quote, “I knew if I made you paranoid enough, you’d bring me to the one I love.” in a deep, sinister tone with an expression of pure insanity. This version of Venom is quite terrifying.
And then he just straight up looses it after consuming the Gene Cleanser

Angry insane people who are suffering often have the most memeworthy facial expressions. I know from experience
I think the best Venom is the one from the 90's animated series for multiple reason:
-Eddie is being built up as a character from the beginning of Season 1.
-His story is impressive especially how they wrap up him becoming Venom in the Alien Costume Story.
-He is genuinelly like comic Eddie, whose life went to shit either because of his mistakes or because of being unlucky.
-Thanks to that his hatred for Spider-Man doesn't feel strained, from his point of view it's believable.
-The Venom episode is the best episode in the whole show.
-Venom's personality is top tier, his quotes, how he is toying with Spider-Man, but at the same time he is also terrifying foe.
-He is the best villain in the whole show.
-He returns and has a villain team-up with Carnage.
-He redems himself, also making a big sacrafice in the end, going out as a hero.
-Accepting Spider-Man as his partner for the greater cause is his final piece of character development.
But Spectacular's Venom is close second.
yeah most of these are some good points. it sucks spectacular spider-man got cancelled cuz maybe we couldve seen some of that here.

Excellent points! I'm honestly not sure whether I give '90s animated or Spectacular the nod, but the '90s version definitely did a lot for the character...supplanting the comic in many ways.
Adding to what Konarkaron listed:
-The '90s version streamlines the symbiote's arrival on Earth (so you don't need to explain the entire backstory of Secret Wars like in the 616 version).
-You touched on this, but Peter and Eddie both work for the Bugle, and Spidey directly interferes with Brock's reporting/credibility a few times. (It's for heroic reasons, like protecting Curt Connors and his family, but Brock's just trying to do his job and doesn't know that). It makes Brock's grudge against both Peter and Spider-Man more natural.
-It was this cartoon that introduced the idea of the symbiote augmenting Spidey's powers, but also bringing out the more aggressive side of his personality.
-It has that really awesome dream sequence with the symbiote and traditional Spider-Man suit fighting over Peter.
-Venom/the symbiote's scenes in the intro were an amazing hook! This cartoon was my first exposure to Spider-Man, and while much of the intro is appealing, Venom was definitely the thing that made me HAVE to watch it.
Both Spectacular and the 90s versions of Veom are awesome.

If season 3 has happened, Eddie would had a redemption arc, and he would become an ally and fight Kleetus Cassidy who becomes Carnage.
to me with spectacular spider-man mostly with season 1 Eddie brock downfall was meant to show what peter life could have been if he allowed his Misfortunes and money problems got the better of him showing Peter overcame his problems well Eddie is meant to show what people can be like if they aren't giving help or think what they are doing is right

The scene where venom tries to give gene cleanser to spider man to reveal his identity and make him helpless has to be most savage moment in history of venom's character
To be honest, what makes this Eddie work is that he's so Self-Centered and Self-Righteous. He's quick to judge others for actions he disagrees with, but he never tries to talk to others or see things from others' perspectives. He blames everyone around him for problems in his life and isn't interested in communicating with others when he's upset. He just prefers to judge others and pretend that he's always in the right.

Actually, the whole "Eddie Brock date with Mary Jane" thing happened before Eddie confronted symbiote Peter about losing his job. Just a minor correction.
This was so entertaining to watch, mostly cause I love Venom but the video itself is amazing. I gotta agree that this is by far the best Eddie Brock!! The music choice killed me at the ending 🤣 the picture too.

Something else that’s worth mentioning is that if this Eddie/venom ever got redeemed down the line (which is likely cus carnage was teased and we all know carnage = a venom Spider-Man team up), it would feel perfectly natural, because as you mentioned, we do see this Eddie be a good person and even heroic in the early episodes.
In the 90’s animated series, it came out of nowhere when he said him becoming a journalist was so that he could be a hero in the “Venom Returns” episode. Example: I fail to see how framing Spider-Man for breaking into the space shuttle is “heroic” when Eddie clearly saw it was the rhino. That would be spreading misinformation, bad word, lies, slander is spoken, in print it’s libel
Eddie changed in the 90s series. Time in prison and seeing Cletus changed him but yeah it's not that well written but I still like it

This Eddie Brock was one of the few sympathetic versions out there, I like how he started as a good guy, who gradually turned sour. it's also helped shape my own version of Spider-Man's story with Venom.
Peter begins to work at the Daily Bugle, which is where he meets Eddie Brock, who shows him the ropes around the place and takes him under his wing, here Brock is an adult whereas Peter is late high school/early college age, and they form a good friendship. but While Eddie is a good guy, he is also a bit arrogant, and at times reckless, which gets him into trouble, which earns Spider-Man pulling him out of it and inadvertently ruining things for him , and Jameson to scold him. He sticks his neck out for Peter which gets him fired, but Peter finds a way to get him back in. its a constant cycle of humiliation, getting fired and rehired. Things sour between them and Eddie's life gradually falls apart. things worsen when the black suit comes along, and that makes him falsify evidence against Spider-Man in desperation, which Peter (Influenced by the Symbiote) exposes in a very cold way, that is Eddie's breaking point, he goes to a cathedral to attempt to end it all but ultimately doesn't go through with it. He prays for forgiveness and that's when the Spider-Man separates from the black suit, the symbiote goes to Eddie, they bond, and Venom emerges, from there Venom begins to destroy Spider-Man's life and break him, just as his life was.

@@lordkiwiz1535 well, actually its an amalgamation of things from different sources and comics. Its a classic Venom origin made with things from other well known versions of the character. Sam Raimi just made a Venom that had a generally classic origin.

His fighting scenes in this show is my favorite for a good damn reason, he is so brutal
The scene in Spectacular Spider-Man where Spider-man and Black Cat are fighting while Venom is crawling around the lab made me want to see a What If...? story where Venom bonds with Black Cat instead of Spider-Man.
There is a symbiote Black Cat in the Web of Shadows game, but that’s about it as far as I know
There are things I like about this venom. For instance I like how his voice is a combination of Eddie brocks voice and the symbiotes voice. Just symbolizes that venom is 2 beings. Not just one. The build up was fantastic. And they managed to perfectly encapsulate Eddie's up most HATRED towards both Peter Parker and spidey. And the name of the symbiote had meaning. "From now on were poison to both Peter parker and spiderman. WERE VENOM!" That line was fantastic. Really enthusized venoms character. And he did everything he could to hurt Peter both physically and mentally. Such as going after his aunt, Gwen stacy, frame him. IMMEDIATELY goes after peter while he's at his house. And tries making him feel guilty for what he did. That's why I love this version of venom. The animated series Eddie Brock was also cool. But when comparing him to this version. He pales in comparison. God I miss this series and even years later having to accept the fact it was canceled before we even got to get a season 3 and see new characters with build up. Still breaks my heart...
I'm guessing they're gonna take inspiration from the ultimate timeline for the spider man 2 game
Calling it now, Harry's gonna try to be a hero at first and the primary antagonist will be Kraven until Harry loses control and becomes way too aggressive and either kills Kraven or does something else irredeemable. Peter's gonna have to kill Harry and Norman who genuinely seems to love Harry in the Insomniac game universe will finally be sent over the edge with grief and become the Green Goblin and serve as the main villain of Spider-Man 3.
I kind of hope they could find a way to blend the two versions of the Venom symbiote's origin. Like maybe they can say Norman discovered the faint remains of black goo in a crashed meteor, and uses it in some science experiments to try and make a cure for Harry. Only for it to be revealed that the black goo was the remains of an alien symbiote that was rejuvenated thanks to Oscorp messing around with it.

My favorite scene of Venom in Spectacular Spider-Man is when Eddie first transforms into Venom and yells out "We will have vengeance on Spider-Man!!" It was just so freaking awesome
I loved this version because it combines both elements from the mainstream comic Venom and the Ultimate comics Venom. Two of my favourite versions of Eddie Brock/Venom in one.

Greg Weisman (co-showunner) actually mentioned that Eddie risking his life so often shouldn't be seen as a heroic moment. He is a foil to Peter, just like the other villains like Norman and Otto, and just like Peter learned to value life after losing his parents and Uncle Ben, Eddie has no respect for it after losing his parents. And then what he said about how he envied Peter's life makes me wonder how sincere a lot of his nicer moments actually are.

Also at 6:54 I wanted to mention that Eddie thought Peter was there taking pictures of the fight but didn't call the cops when the symbiote was "stolen" but in reality Peter thought Chameleon (who was masquerading as Curt Conners) would call the cops. So yeah, it sucks but I love the buildup to his hatred of Peter.
So he, indirectly, did create Venom... Guess that's what Peter gets for not seeing the Chamaleon as one of his greatest foes.

My biggest hype, and sadness about the cancelation before season 3, is that according to Weissman Venom here was still going to become a good guy at some point, especially since Carnage was being set up clearly, so even with all this there's clearly some good inside Eddie AND The Symbiote to some degree and due to how Weissman set up Venom here? They legit ran the gauntlet of all Spider-Man vs Venom stories so logically there wouldn't be a reason to do a third thing unless it was just to settle accounts.

Spectacular Spiderman doesn't completely make Venom a sympathetic character, his motivation is really bad.

This is my favorite venom and with Spider-Man being my favorite marvelous hero Venom easily became my favorite marvel villian especially after this series. He's just a perfect antithesis to Spider-Man. Literally just high caliber Spider-Man with a strength that he can't overcome his ability to be invisible to Spider-Sense. He's a good villian to anyone but he's Venom to both Peter Parker and Spider-Man
I think the best designed Venom is in Spider-Man: Unlimited. It’s not as well-known, and it’s really weird, but ya’ll should check it out. It got canceled too!

This show has someone potential it should have gotten the season 3 because of Disney and they're dealing with Sony they have to cancel it in favor of their own show marvel Spider-Man it was not a bad show it's still spectacular was better.
He is the most relatable Venom and my favorite version as well as favorite Spidey characters of all time. Emo Peter doesn't count as venom. He's #1 of all time.
What made venom hate spiderman excluding the orginal eddie's hatred is the symbiotes own hatred of being rejected by peter.

This was actually the first Eddie I ever got to know. I new who Venom was, but I never cared about the host. I mean, why should I? The monster is the only important thing, right? But after being introduce to this Eddie I found myself surprised about how "lacking" in connection to Peter the rest of them were. It's both a blessing and curse.

I had some minor gripes with design choices for this version of venom ( higher pitched voice, black webbing vs white and no white patches on the hands/ wrist where he shoots web) but god damn the story crafting of turning an ally into an antagonist is top tier.
They did something similar with the rift that grew between Rick and Shane in the walking dead. Which I think is fitting as Shane and Venom are darker mirrors of their respective series protagonists

He did not use the black suit in the comics for 10 years, in the sliding timescale, it was a couple of months, if he used it of that many years the suit would have bonded with him for forever

My favorite part about this whole venom story is that the symbiote feeds off negativity in peter and made him a dick. I like how the symbiote was saying to peter that uncle bens words are stupid asf and it gets you nowhere. But when uncle Ben came in it’s like it was in peter all along and made peter think about his aunt may, Gwen, Harry, Mary Jane, J.J, Betty brant, flash Thompson etc. Peter rejected the symbiote because he didn’t want to become one with the ooze and leave everyone and everything behind and that “with great power comes great responsibility.” actually means something. If Eddie had a aunt may and uncle Ben….venom would probably never even exist.

Venom being a dush from the start in both the mainstream comics and ultimate comics isn't a bad thing. Us not feeling any sympathy for the mainstream Venom and the ultimate Venom isn't a problem. Not every villain needs to be sympathetic.
I have a question. Secret Wars started in 1984 and ended in 1985 (which is where Peter got the Symbiote) and Venom made his debut in 1988, that's roughly 4 years, so how have he been using it for 10?
That was my mistake, I confused it for the normal black suit that Black Cat had made for him that he used during Last Hunt, Death of Jean DeWolfe, etc.

Bruuuh read up on venom lore in carnage: axis it is officially revealed that eddie brock was right and peter parker arrested the wrong sin eater. Venoms reasons arent petty to say the least. His wife left him and didnt eaven tell him that she is pregnant. Spider man destroyed his life. But they made amends and are friends now

While I would agree the shows version is brilliantly handled, it's not necessarily a requirement for every version of Eddie to be sympathetic. For example, if you want a straight up villainous incarnation, you'd use the irrational stalker justification mentality. But for a redemptive and potentially anti-hero iteration of the character you do tend to find the more sympathetic approach such as you cite in Spectacular and what is now the norm in the comics.

To be honest aside from the Venom in the 90s cartoon this really is the only interesting version of Venom in cartoons period.
1. The one in the Spider-Man Unlimited was a generic Doomsday villan.
2. The one in the Ultimate Spider-Man Cartoon was a near mindless monster with no real plan whatsoever, and no replacing Eddie Brock with Harry Osborn as his host doesn't make him anymore interesting.
3. The one in Marvels Spider-Man 2017 cartoon was also a generic Doomsday villan.

90's animated spiderman is the definitive spiderman adaptation along with their portrayal of Eddie Brock/Venom. Unfortunate the Venom movies are hot garbage. The charater deserves way better
Sam Raimi did it really well, though, compared to the 616 version where Eddie and Peter literally had no connection to each other. My theory is that Raimi misunderstood Venom a bit, considering he took interpretation from the ultimate universe as well. On the other hand, the recent Venom movies are not that great at all.

@@antogno4625 Oh boy, you crossed the wrong dude. A connection, you see, may not appear to be important, but when the villain is personally connected to the main character, it has a different impact. While the connection should not be the most important factor, it does add depth to the rivalry. The goal is what counts first. The protagonist's and antagonist's goals should be mutually exclusive. That way, the audience understands why the conflict exists, which in the Raimi triology is always present and the third movie is no exception. But when making a villain that has a connection to the hero, the grudge and rivalry become more intense. When Brock and Peter have a connection and Brock knows who Peter loves the most, it becomes more intimidating for the viewer and the protagonist. They can strike and hurt the protagonist with ease at any time.
Everything I mentioned was present in the third Spidey movie. But I'm not going to argue about the third movie being a masterpiece. It was rushed and interfered with by the studio, but by just watching scene by scene, you can see how much love Raimi put into this, how much he tried to fight and make the movie watchable. Just by looking at the scenes, the cinematography is top-notch. He was forced to add Venom, but he didn't disappoint. Considering there were like 3 different villains and a whore who was getting in the way, most of it was reshot.

I think the best version of Venom period to this day is still the one in the comics (especially now more than ever thanks to Donny Cates’s recent run) but in terms of Venom in media…yeah Spectacular Spider-Man is the best, EZ. True, one could make the argument that the Venom in the 90’s cartoon had a more complete character arc due to him actually becoming an anti hero like in the books but given the possible implications of what Eddie says after the symbiote left him in season 2, it’s clear there was MUCH more planned for him, probably even an anti hero arc. But regardless in terms of living up to the hype, Spectacular is king.
Also 90’s is a good runner up for best, the movies aren’t perfect but a step in the right direction after Spider-Man 3, and the ultimate Spider-Man and 2017 cartoons are total garbage….oh and depending on how things go Insomniac Games could maybe dethrone Spectacular Spider-Man for best Venom (Tony Todd as his voice is already actual perfection), the world will have to wait and see.
okay but it IS worth mention that even though it was through a soft "reboot" of venom, its made clear that venom DID have reason to believe it was the real sin eater. he was contacted by another nut case that thought he himself was
