      Thanks Nick! Fun to try out some random stuff to dunk in resin :) I think a bottle stopper would have gone better, next time!

      I was sad to see the bowl with the Lego men in it didn't work out totally, but it was awesome looking even through a couple guys got decapitated. I can't wait to see what the next project is!!

    Could you get something the same size as the tube and gently melt the figurines in cylindrical shape then mold them up centered in the blank so when you start turning it the mass of the figurines remain somewhat centered and wrap around somewhat? Maybe a wooden dowel might work for the center so you can still drill it out to the size needed.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might work, good idea Johnny!

    Paint brass tubes camo and then cast them in clear?

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Allannvsj That's a good idea, might work if you can keep the blank wider than the soldiers.

  • @dogwoodtales
    @dogwoodtales 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice attempt anyway.
    without the figure fully encapsulated in the epoxy I don't think you could get that green toy plastic to polish up nicely anyway. still would have looked really kewl though to look at the pen and see a little green army man face in there staring back at you from inside clear resin.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dogwood Tales (Ray) Yeah, that's what I was envisioning, but I didn't account for how thin the blanks are. Ah well! It was fun to try anyway :-)

  • @Kinnamon100

    challenge ! I was looking at my scraps and thought of you. How about crown molding. face in different directions. might make a cool blank.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Interesting experiment. Too bad the army men didn't show up too well--to me anyway. Bottlestoppers are a better idea. Hope you try that one soon. Would love to see the result.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +AnkleBiter Woodworks Yeah, I got all excited and just didn't think about how they would really turn out in the end, good to share the failures though too. I'll have to give a stopper a try one of these days.

    Ever play with HDPE? Your molds would be handy with it.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Xyienced That mold is HDPE :-) Works great! I advise against using cutting boards with the hash pattern on them though, those suck. The smooth stuff that you can buy in sheet form is wonderful though.

  • @tonyraven540
    @tonyraven540 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    guess you've done this 1000 times, but I never have. Couldn't figure out what you were mixing up or what a pressure pot is - so guess I'll have to back up and find something more basic to figure out how to dunk my junk. Maybe I'll come back when it makes more sense. Thanks.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry it was confusing for you. I cast them in Alumilite casting resin, pretty much the same idea as epoxy. The pressure pot is used to collapse air bubbles in the resin. You pressurize the casting, then once it's hardened up you remove it from the pressure bubble free

  • @RobMcCauslandArt
    @RobMcCauslandArt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Use smaller army men. They come in 1/100 scale which is 10mm(guessing)?? Maybe messing around with the opacity of the resin would also help? Good luck and cool idea!

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a great idea! I'll have to find some and try it out. My other thought was to just do a bottle stopper blank instead so I can cast it in the middle and not cut into it. That plastic was horrible looking and full of air bubbles

    • @RobMcCauslandArt
      @RobMcCauslandArt 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I could help. The whole video I was wondering?? Why that size army men??
      :)

  • @blakester3043
    @blakester3043 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What may work for pens is kinda morbid, but maybe decapitate the soldiers and cast the heads in a way that the faces will be just outside of the pen tube and do your best not to cut into the heads while turning. Also it might be better to use colors that are more on the translucent side.

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Penrod Garage Thought about it, but you have to somehow dry out the bug guts or it will fail. Haven't figured out how to do that yet... plus I'm not really a fan of bugs so it hasn't been high on my list LOL

    • @ZacHiggins
      @ZacHiggins  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I could have, but it still wouldn't have looked good. I think it would look better if you can fully encapsulate it. When you cut into it, it just looks like green blobs. Maybe a bottle stopper or something
