My favorite TH-camrs every Monday morning ❤️ Never miss any of your adventures. You two are wonderful to watch and always put in a good mood. 🥰
One of my neighbors was a retired engineer and he built me an elevator in my garage to access the attic. It was a platform with a handrail that was attached to an electric winch in the attic. The platform was raised & lowered on 3 square metal tubing guides on the wall of the garage. The winch control hangs down from the ceiling within reach. To use it just lower the platform (which doubles as part of the ceiling) to the garage floor using the winch control, stack the boxes (or items) you want to put in the attic on the platform, hold on to the handrail, put the winch control on raise and ride it to the top. There is a light switch that is within easy reach as you ride up. Just stop the winch when it's floor level with the attic. I have flooring over the entire garage area for storage and it's in a pitched roof area so there is plenty of standing height. It makes getting items to and from the attic much safer. It's very difficult to try to lift boxes while climbing a ladder. Falling onto hard concrete garage floor can be a disaster. I hope this helps someone know how to get the same thing installed in your house. A serious fall can put an end to your retirement dreams. One last thing. I'm a retired RN and I've seen many injuries. The general public believes if we need a surgery we can always have the surgery (for example, fractured hip post fall). That isn't true. If the bone is not strong enough to hold screws you don't get the surgery. The surgeons won't be able to help you in this type of scenario. If the bone will crumble when screws are put into the bone the surgeon will inform you, you are not a candidate for surgery. You'll be discharged to a nursing home with your broken hip. A special pillow called an abduction pillow will be used to help keep your broken hip aligned. You'll get some pain medication and whatever your bone can heal on its own is all you're going to get. A lot of these patients go on to die early due to pneumonia from being in a hospital bed 24/7. It will end your happy retirement dreams. I tell you this in hopes you will stay off of a ladder. I think the cost of the elevator was around $500.00, but that was 10 years ago. Whatever the cost, even 2000.00, is so little to keep you safe and happy in retirement. Take good care of your bones. Get bone density testing done and follow physician recommendations for strong bone health. Lets keep you safe and having fun in retirement!

Those eve/soffit vents have screens to keep the bugs out. If not your attic would be full of bees, lizards, squirrels, rats etc by now.
My goodness Gizmo is adorable. Loved Linda’s friendly chat. This is why Linda has more friends. Most of all I loved your younger pictures & the emotion Jerry had related to the first one. As for Alligators, when they first built homes in my development, a small 3-4 feet alligator was trapped in a tiny amount of water in a newly built pool. My husband & his friend carried it the wild lake near our homes. The baby alligator started making calling noises & they heard a responding grunt. My husband screamed quick put him in lake he’s calling his mama🐊 Linda they do make sturdier attic assess ladders.You’re spry now, but just use caution. Always have Jerry nearby to guide & steady the ladder & catch you if you start to fall. Never access alone. Jeanne ( retired RN)

The real estate market here in Tampa is insane! Our neighbor listed their house at 450K two weeks ago on a Friday, and before the weekend was over, they accepted an offer of $473K. When we were looking for a home last year, we saw our current home on the first day it was listed .. in fact, we were the first viewers in the door. We went outside and had our realtor put in an offer $10K over asking price. She tried to get us to come in lower, but this was the last house we saw before we were going back to Michigan, so it was either we get this house or we start over from scratch another year. Now that we are happily living in our beautiful home, it seems like we made the right choice. And btw, when looking at our estimated home price on Zillow (which may not be entirely accurate), our home value has already increased by 12% and we have owned for a little less than a year.

Just remember with the attic not to overload with too much weight. In the north roof rafters are larger due to snow load. In the Villages the rafters are are minimal size and can't take much more weight than the roof itself.
South of 44 we have many residents that are south of 60 years old. I asked my one neighbor (couple is 46 years old) why The Villages. They said to start living the lifestyle. He works from home. If you wait to 70 that may be too late. We moved here 2 years ago at 60. It’s a wonderful, active lifestyle. Many residents I know in their 70’s have all said they wished they had moved here sooner.
Just a bit about Uber/Lyft drivers. They only get to keep about half (sometimes less) of the fee you pay in the app. And while you can skip the tip, they're not getting one from the company. The apps have a place when you're confirming the ride has ended to add a tip. Of course, cash also works.
I saw a video that shows they actually make below minimum wage when they factor in gas, insurance, car repairs. This is why many are quitting and it is getting harder and harder and wait times are longer to get an Uber or Lyft. I know it's expensive but the company is keeping most of the money. I've only used them when traveling but I always give a generous cash tip so they can keep that for themselves.
Too old to move? We moved at 69 and haven’t looked back. We’re in a great place and really enjoy all aspects of our new life at The Villages!
Good to know. We are giving it a year, as my husband is retiring in 2 months. Need to do financial and emotional homework.
"Old" is a relative term.
One thing I believe is that people
should make retirement plans,
arrangements and get established
at their retirement destination
BEFORE their mental and physical
faculties decline.
Also, people need to understand
that if they want to age in place:
1.) They should not expect to be able walk
upstairs to their apartment/condo as they
age.
2.) They should be aware that they should
have large cash reserves (bcs: inflation, rising
property prices/taxes, inability to drive, to
appointments etc. and repairs/upgrades
that will be needed .... eventually)
I am not attempting to be a
know-it-all. I base my opinions
upon what my parents and
grandparents have done/or not
done.
Jerry & Linda we look forward every Monday evening to sitting down, having a glass of wine and watching Mailbag Monday. Keep the good shows coming. Entertaining and informative, much better than the trash on network TV. Hope to visit the Villages some day. In the mean time "Will see you if we ever get there".

You forgot to mention The Villages Grown for organic super foods. We have our own greenhouses at the corner of Morse and 44. They have at least one store in Brownwood and a van that travels around to different areas.
Also, we have The Villages vans and buses that run all day and take you back and forth to Orlando Airport. It runs around $50 for one way and there are several places to catch the bus. The vans will pick you up at your home and return you to your home. Very convenient for those who don’t want to park and drive to the airport. Great video, always fun!

Jerry you asked about a sunscreen that won’t migrate into your eyes. Best one I’ve found is Tizo 3. It has some tint and it doesn’t take much to cover. I always use Ponds cold cream to remove it because it’s water resistant. You can buy on ebay or probably Amazon too. And, it’s manufactured in the USA!

Interestingly enough we just sold our rental here to a previous renter. He told us that every home they saw online was snatched before they could get in an offer. They decided to look for a rental for next snowbird season and called us to see if they could rent. When we told him we were selling our rental he immediately asked how much and bought it. We sold it turn key which was helpful to them since they will be snowbirds for a few years.

My husband and I watched this today. He saw that bear circa 1970 at the North Georgia Fairgrounds. He was there with his high school football team. One big galoot from another school challenged the bear. He kept slapping the bear in the face. The handler let him loose after several warnings. The bear threw him around like a rag doll until he begged for him to stop. Since then the saying has been in our household “Have you ever rassled a bear?” Well, you can say, “Yes.”
We have a miniature red dachshund named Cheeky. He’s cute but can be a Tasmanian devil, as you probably know.
HA! Yes, he was actually a world famous wrestling bear. I am glad to hear of another experience with him. 😁😁

Nice informative post. Uber app ask for tip the driver when you get to the destination point. Usually between $2.00 and $5.00 .

Yes! Please do a segment (or 2 or 3) on the Lifestyle Visit. Before hubby and I do the Official Lifestyle Visit, we thought we’d try to rent a house for one month in various seasons. I need to see if I can tolerate the extreme heat and humidity.
That's a great idea. I have done the same thing myself. In fact I will be renting a courtyard villa for 2 weeks in July. I have visited The Villages in every month of what I would call the warmer months from May through September. Just pace yourself, especially from late morning until about 4 pm. Great time to visit the pool.
I love Florida... but my take on it is in MN in the winter you run indoors to get to the heat... and in Florida in the summer you run indoors to get to the air conditioning...

Talking about how hot it is in your attic. Install an automatic attic fan which turns on at a certain temperature and pulls out the hot air. Makes your living area cooler below and helps your storages. A very easy fix.

@@JERRYANDLINDA It is not pricey. I am lucky my husband installed ours. It involves cutting a hole in your roof. You can take measurements of the area and check with Lowe’s and see the size you need and motor amp. Believe me it says you money big time plus helps items in storage and lowers electric bill. No matter how much insulation there is, this fan will help. If you know a contractor or involved with the Villages construction team, you can get price quotes from them and Lowe’s. We have been in a home for 1 year, we remodeled a good one with good bones. We are looking ahead now to a retirement place but the market is over the top! Will not be going at these prices, have to wait it out!

Real estate is crazy in Lancaster PA too. We’ve been told we can list ours for $185k more than we bought just 3 yrs ago. Bidding wars are crazy and selling with one day of showings.
Besides the low mortgage interest rates another factor is the high demand and low supply of homes available for sale. This causes an increase in price.
I've heard that homes are selling higher than asking price nationwide not just PA.

I have seen a few postings on my suburb's Facebook group of people looking for homes before they go on the market. 7 months ago my Dad sold his home n eastern Iowa before he listed it. Last week, I received a call, from a real estate agent asking if I was planning on selling my townhouse in the next few months.

Another question...are the villas used for Lifestyle visits, then later sold as “used homes”?
Good question. The Villages is now selling the Lifestyle Visit homes at Alden Bungalows. I think former Lifestyle Preview homes in Atwood villas are also for sale. I don't know if these are sold as new homes or preowned homes as they are being sold by the developer.
Thanks for talking about no lawn landscaping options for the smaller properties. It took a while for me to understand the differences between terms like patio villas and courtyard villas. I understand that the patio villa may allow a rock garden yard instead of lawn. I am concerned about the need to find lawn mowers for months I wouldn’t be present.

Just a word of caution, cardboard or any paper goods stored in the attic can dry out and reach a temperature which can cause spontaneous combustion, . Dosen't really take to much for that to happen in the Florida sun beating down on your roof..Love you guys and your videos .
We are at our lifestyle visit and it is at Atwood which is next to where you took yours. There is an option for a second lifestyle of up to 28 days, which we are going to do and that is in the south.
That's great! It's a nice budget vacation, especially in the summer. ENJOY!

Congratulations on the milestone of subscribers reached. Also congrats on your anniversary coming in July. The attic demo was really informative. One of your respondents, TopHat, mentioned an elevator solution that may help some people have a safer access to the attic. They also gave really good info on the consequence of a fall that I agree with. A fall could ruin your retirement. I have elderly family that have had falls. from my experience a fall really can be the the beginning of the end of a wonderful retirement. Infomative show today. Thank you.

Yes ridge vets are great. I don't see them much down here. Might be because of the crazy rain storms we get where the rain blows sideways sometimes

YES! I would love to have you do a whole blog on the Lifestyle visit as I have also wondered about it....once you are there, are they “sort of expecting” you to seriously move there? I know you can “rent out” someone`s home there over VRO and other sites as a “private holiday” but say if the Lifestlye visit was really NICE, someone might take their “vacation” under the guise of a “lifestyle “ visit with maybe no real intention at the moment to buy......am curious!

We did a weeklong lifestyle visit to the villages in 2019 There was absolutely no sales pressure whatsoever. Our realestate person gave us her phone number and told us to call her for questions or anything else we needed. Easy-peasy.
