DC of the past had so many gems like Alan Moore's Swamp Thing. The level of quality storytelling is still unmatched.
You are now part of the true brotherhood of comic readers...Plus Alan Moore didn’t borrow any of this stuff from Sandman. This came out 4-5 years before Sandman. This was part of the inspiration for Sandman. Cain and Abel came from The House of Mystery which was before Swamp Thing. I highly recommend the house of mystery series. Sooo damn good. Thanks for the videos Gem. Alan Moore’s Swamp Thing is Shakespeare meets Horror.
Anybody else disappointed in DC canceling the tv Series.
From what I understand, someone in the North Carolina state government did an oopsie, and completely fucked WB and DC financially. Season one was a masterpiece. Who knew we could get an actually good looking Swamp Thing with a real costume, without having to make him a CGI character?

That Sandman story you mentioned about going to Hades to get a girl is based off a Greek myth known as Orpheus and Eurydice. Goes to show why these writers are so acclaimed, they know how to call back to the Classics.
Probably my all-time favorite comic book arc, Alan Moore is brilliant. Glad you enjoyed it.
The recolor actually looks really good. For the price, I would say this is definitely worth picking up.

You're right. The colouring is awesome. Everything in this book predates Sandman. A young Neil Gaiman was reading this when he decided to write comics for a living.
I'm with you Gem. I never read this before, but after finishing this Absolute, I want the next volume now. Totally lived up to the hype.
The demon character's name is "Etrigan" and he was created by Jack Kirby.

The “Pog” segment is lifted from Walt Kelly’s Pogo. Very cool and unexpected crossover.
Can you please tell me, the recently released swamp thing box set , has the same content as the absolute edition vol 1 or is it different..??
The box set, if it's Allan Moore, has the complete run, so absolute vol 1 +2 and I think vol 3 if there is one in absolutes.

Well I think DC could do a "Hellblazer absolute" just like they did with "Swamp Thing", not a bad idea and for us collectors living in Japan we don't have a lot of materials american comics around here, it's more like manga! Great video Gem, plus one subscribe!

I really love the new coloring. I have the old Trades and sometimes it is hard to make out what is happening in the panels, a lot of detail just pops out a lot better, in this Absolute.

Alan Moore’s Swamp thing is truly one of the greatest runs in comics history. It won’t ever age.
Great memories of this run. Swamp Thing #32 is one of my favourite issues. Very intelligent run without just being crazy and confusing like most of Grant Morrison's stuff.

I remember picking up the single issues for this arc back in the day and being absolutely blown away by Alan Moore’s take on the Swamp Thing universe! Just wish the binding on this absolute was more robust, and the issue wasn’t as widespread as it seems to be... apart from that nitpick, jumping on this run is honestly a no brainer; truly Alan Moore at his best!!
Hey gem, these predate Sandman by like 5 or 6 years. Alan Moore laid the groundwork for everything that subsequent British writers did at DC vertigo with these books. So really Sandman borrowed from this run not vice versa.

@@cassidyuk After reading the Absolute (only my second time reading these issues) I'm just struck by how much Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Jamie Delano, etc owe to Alan Moore and this run in particular. It actually made me respect their writing less because they jacked the whole tone and style of these comics and ran with it.
@nivek leveb to be fair it was hard not to be influenced by him. He is writ large across the entire industry. Isn’t the main thread of DCs Blackest night taken from two panels of one GL comic in the 80’s. 2 PANELS.

I can admit that I’m pretty much a Marvel guy through and through but I always want to try and read DC stuff but have a hard time getting into there comics. This book looks super interesting because it looks to be mostly a self contained story but also intriguing, might have to read this some time soon. Awesome review Gem 💎

Just got done reading the 6 TPBs of Saga of the Swamp thing! Loved the writing and the art. Disappointed that the Absolute edition isn't a celebration of that original look. Would love an oversized version of the original colours, but I assume any future Saga of the Swamp Thing omnibus' are gonna be using the Absolute Edition colouring. A great, great read if anyone still needs another recommendation to pick up any of the available versions!

GMC, this was a legendary run on a great character. I read some of this run years ago and I had trouble finding the issues in order so it's absolutely amazing to have this amazing seminal work collected all together like this. I'm glad you enjoyed your read through and I enjoyed the review. Hopefully I can pick these up soon.
I can understand people wanting the original colors, some people are purists and that's cool. But an interior colorist got paid and had a chance to color an iconic series. That's dope. One thing too for these older books where you didn't really have gradient options or much room for color theory and separation because this is pre-1993 when Image comics really introduced us to a wider spectrum of color with the comic book medium digitally this may not have been at all what was intended. Only what they could do at the time. Re-mastering something isn't shitting on the original vision. It's breathing fire into the visual pallet to give it more life, spark. (i'll stop, sorry I'm an indie colorist. Someone's dream came true coloring this book.)

My ‘V for Vendetta’ Absolute version had/has major binding problems,apart from that my other 3 absolutes (Watchmen,Top 10 & Ronin) had zero issues with binding,I’m definitely still picking this up,my All time favourite come run.
Love these vids as they open up new books etc that I may not really have thought of reading. Quick question, where do you get the shelves? I’m in the U.K., just want to find something similar as I’ve a lot of art of books and the are quite heavy and some shelves just aren’t secure enough.

Great reading of this series on God Loves Comics. I had already read every issue, which I highly recommend, but it was fun listening to it being read. I discovered a lot of new stuff. Moore is a genius.
Nice review - I have this book and really like the updated colouring. The alligator issue is a homage to Wait Kelly's Pogo.
Love the review gem! I've never read swamp thing before either so I had to pick it up in this format. I was one of the lucky ones couldn't fault my book, love the design of it, the new colouring, the story is great. I'm only half way through and I can't put it down!
During the first read of the book, the spine split apart. Since you are an expert? What is the best way to restore this? Ant guidance will be much appreciated

Yo Gem found your channel awhile back. Love the content and the consistent uploads. Love the comic book stuff but Love the old school video game stuff too. You should get into the old 1950's EC (Crime Suspenstories, Tales from the Cyrpt, Vault of Horror, etc) and 1970's Creepy and Eerie books. I think you'd dig it.
Read the first 7 issues in tpb. Loved it. You're review sold the Absolute for me. Looking for it here in Manila, Philippines. :)

This is before Sandman, so if anything, Sandman took from it. Moore is KING! Great video; I share your enthusiasm. Moore's Swamp Thing is my favorite comic run ever.
I've ordered the first book or volume to the Saga Of Swamp Thing and I can't wait to read it and review it on my own channel. The review only got me more intrigued in the comic
I was14 when the Len Wein-Bernie Wrightson version premiered. I was 25 when Alan Moore took over and yes, He did totally re-invent the character. I`m 62 now and going to re-buy this, the recoloring looks great. The story," Pog" ,you`re referring to was a tribute to the cartoon-strip Pogo by Walt Kelly. I envy you for reading this for the first time and being able to not have to wait 30 days for the story to complete. It was quite a mind-blowing experience. If you can please read his Miracle Man reprints from Marvel. It`s just as good. Definitely get The next volume , the story gets even better.
That thumbnail tho! Gem, you looked like a kid on Christmas morning, pure elation. I just picked up the trades with the original art, but still kind of want this absolute as long as you are reporting the binding is holding up.

I envy you reading this for the first time. I would love to read it new - again. Alan Moore is an incredible story teller and his Swamp Thing books are very smart stories. You've read Sandman, but have you tried Garth Ennis' Hellblazer? His run on the title is another series everyone should read. Grant Morrison's Animal Man run, too.
As others have said man, you read the one! This is where comic fans were challenged in philosophy and horror, first number one selling horror comic since the comics code. You gotta check out Sideshows Swamp Thing statue, Bernie wrightson mixed with John totelbem and Steve bissette it’s a beast
#21 anatomy lesson was best issue i read (in 1995 first time) reason i collected watchman tpb, killing joke , and later top ten and league of extraordinary gentlemen awesome writer

In the early 1990’s there was a Swamp Thing Cartoon that lasted for a little while. I watched the 1980’s Swamp thing movies there was a 1990’s tv series that lasted for three seasons.
The anatomy lesson issue completely changes Swamp things origins. I have this in trades. It’s my favorite run. I’ve been debating re buying it in this format. If this run came out today idiots would label it SJW

moore retconned swamp. and i believe the demon etrigan talked regularly before moore, but he made him talk in rhymes. and its been like that ever since. really glad you liked it! :)
Glad you loved it, man. There's a reason this book made Swamp Thing my favorite charecter. So much is utterly amazing about this book. Alan Moore completely reinvented Swampy, from his previous books, in a way that made it feel like it was planned from the begining. Also, that Pog issue is a crossover, with the comic strip of the same name. I believe Alan Moore himself set the crossover up.
There was no cross-over. The Pogo comic strip ended in 1975 with Walt Kelly`s death(1973).
So, the binding issues were just some bad copies here and there right? Great video though

My favorite Alan Moore comic of all time
I told you you’d dig it. It sort of dips in the middle, but that ending is insane. Moore was the one that chose the Alec Holland twist to Swamp Thing.
Niel Gaiman wrote Samdman after he was reading Alan Moore Swamp Thing, it brought him back to Comics, after he abandond Comics when he was 16-17 years old as Schoolboy Fantasy. Alan Moore Swamp Thing have changed the way we got comics ultimate leading in the birth of Vertigo, and abanding the Comic Code Authority. Alan Moore is just a Master of Comics but also the inventer of Gangster Rap. He was evan the "Teacher" of Niel Gaiman when it comes to Comics and Niel said it best "The thing you got to know about Alan Moore is that he is a genius" He brought multiple of the best Charakters DC has. John Constantin, Matthew who later becomes the raven of Dream, just to Name two. The Anatomy Lesson is still one of if not the best singleissue I have ever expirienced. Love and Death is just beyond every Story i could think of, not just in Comics. Every issue of this Run is breathtackingly good. If you have not read it jet,do it now

The Pog issue was a tribute to the Pogo comic strip. It’s a bit out of place in the story but I believe that’s due to being a fill in, to allow the regular artists to catch up on the main story.
Now i am curious to hear your opinion on Snyder's Swamp Thing
Great character, totally overlooked by most of the normies in Hollywood. There's enough background to have made a great Swamp Thing movie Trilogy. Swamp Thing and Solomon Grundy are two of my favorite DC comic characters 😎👍
Alan Moore’s full run is my favourite run of comics ever,it might not be his best(favourite & best aren’t the same thing you tube)but yeah the six trades are my all time favourite comic run,the absolute re-colouring is a strange touch though,I’d have to see it for real to say if it’s better than the original or not,I thought the original colouring was fine myself,

Swamp Thing has always been one of my favorite reads. I know you don't collect DC statues but since you love this story so much you should pick up the Sideshow Swamp Thing Maquette. The statue gets a bad rap for being made out of PVC but it's one of the best looking and most detailed statues that has been put out by Sideshow.
So, if I had to recommend the Top 3 Gem Mint Episodes to introduce fans to your channel, they would be: 1) 5 Things Collectors Should Do During Quarantine; 2) GUTS statue unboxing (unbelievable!); and 3) Absolute Swamp Thing by Alan Moore Review. You just nailed all the key features of this amazing Absolute Edition - without spoiling anything, you indicated that Alan Moore came up with a new twist to Swamp Thing's origin and what he actually is; you highlighted the Demon's poetry (he's a rhyming demon which again is Alan Moore genius although I guess you found it frustrating - LOL); 3) Without going into spoiler territory you showed the double page spread of Abby being held by her uncle Arcane's demons - an allusion to sexual abuse and incest; 4) you hit upon the novelty of the issue with the Pig adventure including their humorous way of speaking and describing the Earth as their "new lady"; 5) you hit on Cain and Abel (Houses of Mystery and Suspense) in the Abandoned Houses story which again is more Alan Moore genius that fellow Brit Neil Gaiman (highly overrated in my opinion) took inspiration from; 6) the classical references to Orpheus (who went to the Underworld to rescue the soul of Eurydice from Hades) from Down Amongst the Dead Men (Swamp Thing Annual) when Swamp Thing goes to Hell to recover Abby's soul (one amazing scene was when Etrigan the Demon plants a flower in Hell to make the netherworld more bleaker still; this issue was also great b/c all the supernatural DC characters - Phantom Stranger, Demon, Deadman, and the Spectre ("the light? he's just opening his eyes!" - epic) all serve as guides for Swamp Thing just as in Dante's Inferno we have Dante as a Knight Templar being guided through the seven rings of Hell by the spirit of the Classical Greek poet/philosopher Virgil (who wrote the Aenied); 7) the Rite of Spring when Abbey and Alec have psychedelic sex from one of the tubers she eats; 8) you shouted out to the amazing art by the team of Bissette/Totleben (although I don't think you cited them by name). Gem, that was an unbeleivable and comprehensive review - I was pre-med in college (UC Berkeley) during the 1980s when those issues were coming out - this was around the time when the Dark Phoenix Saga/Days of Future Past was just a few years old and Frank Miller's initial run on Daredevil (with Bullseye killing Electra) had only recently happened - both Watchmen and Miller's Dark Knight Returns were just on the horizon. Great wonderful days and your review reminded me of all the magic from Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run (wait 'til you read the next Absolute which should contain American Gothic where the stress and suspense and horror and epic-ness gets cranked to 100!).
