Drinking your life away is pretty popular, actually. if it wasn't, there wouldn't be so many alcoholics. with the way the world is today, it's really no surprise that people would rather waste away in an attempt to end their suffering more swiftly, and escape reality while doing it. the alternative is to waste your life away working for a better future you'll never obtain (you end up just making someone who's already wealthy richer and get the snot taxed out of you) or hopelessly throw yourself after women that will always, ALWAYS reject you (or only stay with you until they can find something better and then dump you like garbage.) so for a lot of people, the bottom of a bottle or mug *_is_* their only solace; it's the one thing they DO have control over, the choice to leave reality behind for a few sweet hours and completely disconnect from the cruel reality they live in that nobody loves or cares about them because they didn't succeed early in life, and that they'll end up dying alone in an apartment or a back alley somewhere.

I grew up watching this amazing series, while my mother slowly but surely delved into alcoholism. Seeing this hilarious take on it and living with a heavy drinker was a juxtaposition for me. I'm glad to say I didn't go down that path. So many kids I attended school with were not allowed to watch The Simpsons because back then many parents saw it as obscene (little did they know the likes of South Park was not too far behind). Many said that it was a bad influence, but Pukahontas illustrates drinking problems in a way network TV never did. Amidst the wilting rose, the pizza box, gorgeous cinematography and the Duff, there is a real message of despair and caution. Perhaps I internalized that. My mother is sober now and life goes on because she was brave enough to get herself out of that horrible state.
My mom currently suffers from the same thing. Drunk every night with wine instead of beer. I knew her before she was like this. My brothers grew up knowing nothing different and because of this have practically grew up avoiding her their entire lives. We have tried to help her, but she doesn't want help, she doesn't want to admit she has a problem. In reality I think she knows she has a problem, but thinks that there is no hope to stop now, so she is trying to make the best of the situation by trying to hide the problem even when its right in front of us everyday.
