My favorite PR83 dupe is Schminke's Ruby Red DEEP, which *oops!* I just found out is M. Graham's Alizarin you have here (PR 264), and I have that too. They're different, though! IDGI. 😂 But really my favorite Alizarin is PR83. I can't help it. There's a difference with the transparency!
I also have Sennelier's 3-pigment one you have here and really like it, though it's nothing like the others as you showed. I can't help it: I really like alizarins and sometimes, the PR264 is a bit "heavy" for what I think of as alizarin, but for mixing blacks (for my black panthers and bears and parts of woods) they're such necessary colors for me. I generally have a few yellows and reds and just skip the orange (I have Hansa Deep which is as orange as I care to do). But thank you so much for doing the alizarins! They don't get a good rap on YT but part of fun of painting is the actual slapping paint down and making art. If I _really_ need a dupe for something I intend to sell/give, I'm trending towards p. maroon. (If I want to ENJOY painting it though, PY83 is bae! ❤️

M Graham's Perm Aliz Crimson is also very, very staining, the most staining color I own, so that texture is permanent especially on cellulose paper. The tip that Renea gives is helpful, although I rarely have distilled water available. I don't recall getting that texture or the same staining behavior with the Winsor & Newton Winsor Red Deep, also PR264, but I used up my tube so no longer have it to test. I do have WN Alizarin Crimson, the original PR83, and none of the PACs compare, it's so transparent and glowy. But I don't really need it in my palette, I'm happy with Quin Rose and Quin Magenta. As always, appreciate your tests!!

I find m graham paints are very sensitive to dissolved minerals in water. I get that texture with several m graham paints if I use my tap water, which is high in calcium and manganese. I had to switch to distilled water. I am not sure if that is what happened here or not, but that texture is what it looks like. Thank you for your review :)

Oh I've never considered this, thank you! Will test with distilled water to see how my M.Grahams turn out

I get the same texture when I use my tap water with M Graham paints too. It happens a lot with the quinacridones and phthalocyanines especially.

@@spruceandsquirrel the first and most prominent problem I noticed in the anthaquinone blue. But all of my strong none granulating colors by m graham do this in my tap water.

I happened to have the Roman Szmal version of this color and I am very happy with it. I find that it mixes up beautiful colors, especially the purples/violets and roses. I have really fallen in love with this brand.

That rusty orange color is a color alizarin can be-anywhere between rusty orange to a deep purple, like a quinacridone purple 55. It’s weird, though, because Sennelier’s Genuine Alizarin Crimson (they call it Alizarin Crimson Lake) is much more like that Ruby-colored crimson. Rather, it’s the Jackson’s Alizarin that has that rusty look

I found that Daniel Smith's one loses a lot (!) of its brightness in the sun. It was incredibly disappointing. W&N and DaVinci also became duller, but less so. The White Nights Madder Lake Red Light, a PR187, also became duller, and was probably more comparable to DS that way.
I have a PR264 from Mission Gold which behaved strangely in masstone in my test, it developed white spots, like grains of rice, as if the sun burned some of it away. I also have a PR264 from Kremer (not tested yet) and that one does granulate! ☺️
The most lightfast one I tested was the QoR one, which was surprising considering it's a PR177, so I put it up again now to see how it fares over the summer.
My favourite deep red so far is Schminke Permanent Carmine (cooler than the alternatives above) with some of White Nights Venice Purple (a PR179) to make it warmer.
The W&N Permanent Carmine is also lovely, and also cooler, and held up pretty nicely in the sun.
My personal favourite PV19 is M Grahams, it has the same shade as DS Quin. Red. It dries very matt, which I love, and is super intense. So that one with a PR179 or PBr24 is beautiful, in my opinion. The Schminke Permanent Carmine is a deeper red than that one though. ☺️
Thank you for another fantastic video!

How is that Qor pr177 doing now? (being 10months since your comment) I love that pigment and would be really excited if Qor had managed to make a more lightfast version of it. Hopefully you see this message and thanks for all that info in your comment! I wish I could personally lightfast test every single brands version of every cool transparent red cause I just never trust the labels when it comes to lightfast ratings lol

@@Nik.66 Hi! I know how you feel! And it's with good reason we don't trust them! 🙈 I read Golden/QoR's blog (just paint) on lightfastness testing for watercolors and I now feel enlightened 😂
I only have them up during the summer, so they are now starting their third summer. After 8 months it was still on par with Daniel Smith's Permanent Alizarin Crimson, but that one I didn't bother putting up for more than 4 months considering how quickly it dulled. I'd still probably choose a red like the Schminke one, or QoR Quinacridone Crimson, mixed with a bright PR179. White Nights and W&N are bright and very similar in Hue, Roman Szmal is even brighter, but doesn't come in a tube if you'd like to premix your own shade.
I'm so glad if the info helped in some way, I'm trying to pay it forward. ☺️

Loved your video and thought it was pretty thorough. I definitely haven't done the kind of research into paints that you have, so I'm curious for your thoughts. It has been my experience that alizarin crimson is generally not a lightfast color. Even when the manufacturer uses the word, “permanent,” in the name, I have found that when I check the lightfast rating on that color, it ranges, depending on the manufacturer, between poor and awful. Since I never want to create, much less sell a painting to someone using any non-lightfast colors, I haven't used alizarin crimson since my art school days. Has something changed in the manufacturing process with this color to make it lightfast or is lightfastness not a factor for you when choosing to do a video on a particular color?

They look so much redder in the video than they do on my swatches at home. I wonder if its my phone or my lighting or your lighting 🤔
I just want a red that looks like red. Like not pinky/purpley/orangey/rusty. Just red. What watercolor do I buy?
*edit. I ordered perylene red because it looked the reddest on jacksons site. But it looked kind of pink on blick so now im nervous. 😬
