    Rising Sun Redbud is one of the best landscape plants I have ever seen. This Flamethrower looks like an exceptional progression of the Rising Sun. Amazing 4 season appeal, the best.

      p.s. there’s no way I’d trust growth sizes. my rising sun redbud is easily 15-20 ft tall which is significantly larger than the 8-12’ listed on the tag. Interested in swing the flamethrowers grow up so we can get a better idea of the real world growth and sizing

      Yes, it is exciting and VERY NEW! 😁So, it will take a little while for it to make it into every garden center. Many folk don't even know about it yet.... but once they do, it will be great to see it popping up in people's gardens. I think if you listen to the video... you can figure out that we like it.... just a teeny, little bit!🤣
      Once you get to try and enjoy it, I hope you'll take a few moments to let us all know your experiences with it. Sharing valuable information like this - is how we all learn and get the most from our gardens. Thanks for a helpful comment on The Rising Sun, it is everything that you describe (and more). ✔🌳👌

      @@marambula Thanks, as you've probably noticed (around the 2.4 minute mark in the video), I mention that we estimate the size to be about "15' to maybe 20' '". This may change as we get to watch more mature trees establish in different areas and growing conditions of our region. Because exciting new trees (like this one) are in such high demand, they are often pruned regularly in the nurseries for all propagation budwood that can be harvested - so it can be a little tricky to accurately get a handle on the exact size until we get to see more of them in the landscapes. That's why it is great to have you report on what you are seeing out there in your area. Thanks for taking the time.😄

      Well Done! You are in for a treat...., having this in your garden will be very special!
      Looks like a case of the "early bird gets the worm" and demonstrates the advantages of compiling a wish list, and then checking in at garden centers regularly to check out the new arrivals (throughout the seasons).
      Another tack that David finds works well for him, is to quietly mention to the plant buyers too, that you are after something..... It may take a little while for them to obtain it, but if you have them looking for you, there's a good chance they will come up with it eventually.
      Be sure, to keep us updated on your progress with it, and also if you don't mind, please share the knowledge and click the "like" icon on this or any of our other videos that you find helpful, because that will help other people find the information too.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Good choice. Much prettier and much more interesting than cold, hard, inanimate (over-rated) crystalized carbon!
      Our trees are grown in large pots and will continue to grow in these pots for at least a season, but when it comes to winter because the roots may freeze (depending upon where you live) they will need to be planted out, protected in a sheltered spot or moved into a larger container with larger soil volume. The neat thing about these redbuds is that since they are grown primarily for their foliage color and respond well to pruning, they can be pruned annually in spring (after they flower) to keep them within bounds.😊👏

    I appreciate your pleasing voice and love your accent.
    This is a beautiful variety. I am in zone 7, Piedmont Triad. I have a young Rising Sun Redbud which is limping along. Its leaves are a fair bit tattered and rough looking. I believe it might actually be planted too shallow. Arborist couldn't find anything wrong with it. It's in full sun. A mystery.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First, thank you for your kind comments.... it is appreciated!
      Secondly, don't be too concerned because redbuds will often take a little while to get going. They are members of the pea and bean family with roots that are not the best "transplanters" (which is why we grow all our redbuds in pots and why we treat them in a special way to encourage a healthy, well established fibrous root system before we send them to the garden centers). I also wouldn't worry too much about it being planted "too shallow", because while this is not ideal, redbuds have the ability to root down into the soil and get all they need eventually. If you haven't already, I would definitely encourage you to mulch the area above the root zone and of course keep it clear of grass and weed competition and water it during dry periods. Because of the "tattered leaves" it sounds like you have it out in an open position, which is OK, but if you look at redbuds in nature they are usually found in woodland groves, so they are better in sheltered sites or planted in the lee of other trees or evergreens. Therefore, it might be a good idea to erect a temporary shelter screen to protect it - especially in the early part of spring when the new soft plastic-like leaves are emerging. Later on (once established) it will probably be OK, but perhaps if you have the space, you might consider planting some other things upwind to shelter it a little bit.
      Finally, this (Flamethrower) is amazing (truly breath taking). It is still very new and only available yet in limited numbers but when you get a chance (and you are lucky enough to find one) - YOU SHOULD GET IT!
      Thanks again for your nice comments - my accent is what it is... like it or not, it is what it is!

      We are big advocates of Fall planting....., its nature's planting time. The soil is still warm after the summer and now with the Autumn rain it is moist too, so they quickly settle in and establish a good system in their new location. They will not look like grow they are growing much above ground, but under the soil level they will rapidly be sending out vigorous roots that will enable the top growth to take off next spring and cope with the demands of their first spring and early summer. A lot depends the quality and production system of the plants from your chosen supplier, so we are unable to comment on that, but we know that the trees we ship (like those shown in this video) to our partnering garden in our region (including Zone 6): grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ are grown in large pots with a special production system that ensures our trees are equipped to make a rapid and successful transition to their new location. That's why when you remove the pots from our trees, you will find a well established, non girdling, fibrous root system that is comprised of lots of fine feeder roots (instead of encircling ones that run around the inside of small pots), all these fine roots quickly grow out into the surrounding soil at this time of year to establish. and get poised to take off in spring.

      Thanks for reaching out to us, and thanks for your nice comment also.
      The short answer is that either will be fine, but if it helps, let us tell you that we grow all of our plants out in the open, in sunny conditions. That helps us make sure our plants are stockier and bushier, and well-shaped with plenty of beautiful colored foliage.
      The critical thing to remember that Redbuds are not the world's best transplanters and that's why we go to a lot of trouble to grow our plants in a special process in pots that makes sure they have a fine fibrous root system.
      Here's a link: th-cam.com/video/SNu2CI10oF0/w-d-xo.html to another of our videos (also on this channel) that will not only show you what they look like, where we were planting it (also in a bed, out in the open), but also (we hope), you will be interested to see David's suggestion on how to plant them, including the very important part where we describe how its important to water them well until they get established.

      Thank you for reaching out to us (and BTW, David sends his regards to everyone from his homeland).
      Flame Thrower is primarily grown for its spectacular foliage and the flowers appear more prolifically on Redbuds as they mature, so your young plants will flower better as they get older.
      We would expect it to grow just like the other redbuds, so if you have Forest Pansy and Covey doing well, then Flame Thrower will do well too.
      With clay soil, one thing you might consider is to bring in sandy or gritty soil and create a raised bed so that the root system is up above the normal soil level, that way you wouldn't have to be concerned about the soil being too wet and saturated during heavy rainfall periods.
      If you take a look at some of David's other videos for instance this one on Lavender: th-cam.com/video/4A55OCs82t0/w-d-xo.html you will see how we created raised beds here in our nursery trial areas. We have sandy soil but there's a layer of clay beneath that, so this is how we deal with it.

      It is really up to yourself. Either would work, they respond very well to pruning, so you could trim them back as you describe to keep them tighter in shape but also lusher side branches with larger leaves. Personally, I like the natural, slightly pendulous habit but as I mention above it is up to yourself.

    Love your videos! When I’m looking to learn about a specific plant, your channel is always my first source.
    I planted a 8 ft tall Flame Thrower Redbud tree in mid June this year by the west side of my house facing south. It seems to have done ok, the only thing is, it’s losing the color variety in its foliage comparing to when I first got it, now most of the leaves are green with very few yellow/red leaves (which can’t even be detected unless I go into the tree and look for them). Is there anything I can do to bring the colors back? Thanks 😊

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I think the color will be more pronounced in the earlier part of the year (when it is growing strongest), and also because your plant is still getting settled in and establishing, it will not be making as much new growth as it will when it is fully established and thriving (which may take a few years). To keep the color coming, it will be important to supplement the watering in dry, summer weather, and if you haven't already, it would be good to put down a 3" deep layer of mulch and eliminate any grass root competition if it is in a lawn area. I expect you will see much better color in subsequent years, when it is fully rooted in, and growing strongly.

      Sometimes, when plants are struggling it hot, dry conditions they will prematurely drop their foliage and go into a kind of summer dormancy, and this summer (as we drive around neighborhoods in our region), we see quite a lot of plants that are struggling to cope. That's why its important too incorporate lots of organic matter at planting time, mulch the planting spot well, and supplement with extra watering during these stressful periods.

      Even if seed was available, the plants would not come true to type, it tales quite a long time for the "babies" to grow up, and they do not transplant well as bare root trees too.
      So, saving up and investing in one of our specially grown (container grown) specimens is a worthy investment. Maybe there's a special occasion (birthday, wedding anniversary etc.) coming up that would provide a good reason to splurge!
      Like David mentions in this video on planting them: th-cam.com/video/SNu2CI10oF0/w-d-xo.html trees like this one are a wonderful way to commemorate special events. Something that lasts for years and gets bigger and better as it grows.

      We understand. One thing in your favor is that Cercis respond really well to pruning! So, because the new foliage is so fantastic, you could try pruning it hard every spring and in that way keep it so that it doesn't take up as much space and enjoy the benefit of larger, more luxuriant leaves. Alternatively "leg it up" (remove lower branches), so you grow two tiers of garden plants i.e. allow it to branch out about other shade loving plants .

    Hi I planted my flame thrower cercis tree in the en of winter is growing ok but at fionly give just few flowering then beautiful leaves bot and the beginning of summer the leaves just turn green even the new baby leaves.
    My question is what I can do do get those beautiful leaves back thanks.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for your question. Over the years, I noticed that it is not unusual to see relatively recently planted specimens go into a kind of suspended summer state. It often takes a few years for them to settle in to their new position, root out into the surrounding soil and build an extensive root system. Once they do this, they are then able to draw up sufficient moisture and nutrients to keep growing vigorously right through the heat and stresses of the summer months. The symptoms you describe are an example of this, and while it may not be growing much above ground, it will be steadily making root under the surface, so if it is possible to do some regular supplemental watering and refresh the mulch ,this will help to keep the roots cool and moist. A good (3-5 minutes) long drink in the evening or early in the morning, a couple of times during the week especially during any prolonged dry periods will certainly help. Try to direct the water in at the base of the tree (not spritzed over the top (this just evaporates off) and the when you have "nursed" your tree through the rest of the year, you should start to see plenty of healthy colorful foliage in subsequent years. Just be careful not to over do it (it won't like it soaking wet for long periods either) and don't worry about any fertilizer etc. it will get all it needs form the remains of the pot grown root ball.

    I planted a redbud flamethrower about a year and a half ago. I live in Portland Oregon. Now some of the leaves are getting black spots and some of the leaves are wilting any idea what I can do?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Sounds like there's possibly a fungal leaf pathogen present, but that should not be a problem this late in the season because the plant will be getting ready to drop its leaves shortly,
      Its not unusual to see spots on leaves this late in the season, and the chances are that next spring the new foliage will arrive fresh and healthy.
      That said, to be on the safe side, it would be wise to rake up these old leaves to clean up the site and remove the chances of any carry over of spores.
      We hope this helps.

      Early spring (before the buds start swelling) is the best time to prune Redbuds. The good news is that they respond very well to pruning, so in time you should be ablet to build a nice well shaped head.

    I've seen several reports and comments about the tree dying on the top the first year or two in the ground? Have you heard the same. It'll then regrow from the bottom up?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Depending upon the history of the tree, the conditions, time of year, transportation, the transplanting technique etc. etc. sometimes some trees do not always transplant the way that we would like them to. So, we (and our partnering garden centers) go to a lot of trouble to make sure that the trees we grow are healthy, well shaped, pot grown specimens that are equipped and ready to make a seamless transition to their new sites. That's why when you remove the pots from our trees, you will find a well established root system that is comprised of lots of fine fibrous roots that quickly root out into the surrounding soil to establish and grow away. If some of the things I mention above occur, then the tree will try to survive and that's when the parts closer to the ground will try to regrow. Mulching and regular watering will help them make the transition too.

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That would probably be a wise move! It is so beautiful, it would be a shame to see the tips nibbled or the stem damaged by a buck rubbing his antlers. Once it gets its head and lower branches above the grazing level, it will (like in nature) be fine, but until then, it would be good to erect a protective barrier.

    Question: would this flame thrower redbud produce seeds ? 🙏🏻🌸

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is the result of a hybrid cross and so there is a possibility that it might be sterile and not produce seeds. But, we don't know because we have never seen any seed on any of our plants or even heard of any being recorded on the original plant. It normally takes several years for Redbuds to become mature enough to set seed and because this is new selection, all our plants haven't reached that stage. So, we simply don't know (yet).

    • @OverdevestNurseries

      I am afraid USDA Zone 8b is outside of our region and therefore I cannot give you a definitive answer except to say that where the trials took place (that I mention in the video) is in Zone 7 and therefore there is a likelihood that it will be OK with you too. What I suggest is that you get in touch with the best garden center experts in your area and check with them. This selection is so new, that we have yet to discover more about it. Especially its limits outside of our region and the trials that we've been involved with. The plant experts at many family owned garden centers are a terrific source of experience and local knowledge and often can provide tremendous insights and on the spot guidance.

      Well done....., you now belong to a pretty exclusive club of Cercis Flame Thrower owners! It is going to be FABULOUS and we hope you are able to enjoy it for many years to come. As for other things, there's loads of possibilities..... and probably the best thing to do is scan through our videos (here on this channel) or visit (frequently) some of our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ to survey what else "catches your fancy"! We are continuing to deliver fresh plants every week (right through the summer and Fall), so by stopping in regularly you will be treated to all sorts of exciting possibilities. What I would suggest is that you look for perennials, grasses and shrubs that compliment the orangery-red hues but also (importantly) extend the interest in spring, autumn and winter - so your Flame Thrower is just one the performers in your year round concert of color and interest.

      It is a selected variety that does not come true from seed, so vegetatively propagated (budded or grafted) plants produced by licensed growers is how it is available.
      Ordinary green Redbuds (Cercis canadensis) can be easily raised from seed but selected forms (like this one) have to be propagated by experts.

    Can this Flamethrower grow in California?

    • @OverdevestNurseries
      @OverdevestNurseries  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Our experience is limited to our Mid-Atlantic and Northeast region but my understanding is that it will grow in Northern California, but it would be best, to check with your local garden center people. They know your local conditions, they will know what plants thrive and which ones don't! And the other thing I would suggest is that you keep an eye out as drive around you neighborhood and see if you spot any other Redbuds, because if you see them doing well in other people's gardens in your area, they are likely to do well for you too. They will be easily spotted in spring when they are flowering.
