      I don't think he should have to speak English at all. He's Japanese. And he has a translator. The only reason he wanted to learn was so he could communicate with his coaches and the other skaters. At these interviews they should always have a translator for him if they are interested in what he has to say and let him answer in Japanese because he has a lot to say. And because he struggles so much with English he ends up not being able to express himself and looking half as intelligent as he is.

    • @Urumi89
      @Urumi89 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tonya--7704 I really can't see the point of your comment. He always said that he wanted to be fluent in english because he has to speak publicly and communicate with his coaches. But it's clear that he never received proper lessons or he'd be very fluent at this point.

    • @tonya--7704
      @tonya--7704 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@Urumi89
      And since he's not fluent he shouldn't be forced to speak IS my point. As important as he is he should have a designated interpreter for interviews with English speaking journalists. Someone who understands him well. People are missing out on the nuances of his interviews. As determined as he is in his life and as much of a perfectionist as he is I can only assume that he doesn't speak perfect English because he doesn't want to. He should be treated as the diplomat he is by the JSF and provided with everything he needs to represent Japan. This includes an interpreter.

    I think の発音が矯正されたのはあっぱれ。次に気を付けるべきなのは、文イントネーションかな?
    日本語は、シラブルごとの長さがほぼ均等で、子音と母音が原則として交代する高低アクセント言語。
    フランス語も、シラブルごとの長さはほぼ均等ですが、欧米諸言語の多くは、強弱アクセントや長短アクセント言語。
    つまり、単語の中で、強勢、つまりアクセントが落ちる個所があり、そのアクセントを繋げるようにして、文全体のリズムやメロディーを音楽のように形成していく言葉なのです。
    子音の多いドイツ語やロシア語ですらそうですから、母音が強調されるイタリア語や英語ならなおさらですね。
    リズムが平坦な高低アクセント言語である日本語に慣れている日本人が欧米語を話すと、子音ばかりを強調し、文全体にしかるべきリズムやメロディーがなく、聴き取りにくくなるのはそのせいでもあります。
    逆に、文イントネーション、リズムやメロディーが正確なら、それだけで言いたいことは大体わかってしまうから、細かな文法の間違いがあっても、話す際には結構通じてしまうことが多い。
    もちろん、個々の単語の発音はある程度できていることが前提ですが。
    ですから、外国語として言語を習う場合こそ、本当は、重箱の隅を突くような細かな文法より、文イントネーション、文全体のリズムやメロディーをきちんと教えるべきなのです。
    これも、日本の公立の中学高校ではほとんどやっていないことだろうと思うので、羽生選手ができなくても、それは羽生選手の責任ではなく、日本の英語教育の情けなさであり、文部科学省の責任なのですが。
    羽生選手は耳がいいから、話す際に、もう少し文全体のイントネーション、リズムやメロディーに気を配り、強調される中核となる単語のアクセントが落ちる個所の母音にきちんと声を乗せるようにすれば、各段に聴き取りやすくなると思います。

      Quite right. I think Yuzu picked up the language from the limited exposure he had in Canada. Same problem of English teaching in Japan and Indonesia I guess, but Indonesians somehow have more flexible tongue than the Japanese and Chinese.

      This is a guess, but I suspect official/professional interpreters weren't arranged by the competition. The "interpreters" they're using seem to be members of the travelling Japanese and Chinese press. This would explain why Yuzuru was reluctant to use the interpreter at first (knowing it's not her regular job), why the Japanese "interpreter" then asked a question (as if she's a member of the press), and why multiple different Chinese journalists acted as the "interpreter" for Boyang.

      Yes. She is a Japanese journalist. But since she covers figure skating she often acts as Yuzu's interpreter at these press conferences when she's there. I actually don't think she does that good of a job of conveying everything Yuzu is saying and I think he gets frustrated that the meaning behind his words isn't always made clear when translated into English.

    Переводчицу в неудобное положение поставил, да и слушать его ну ооочень тяжело, почти ничего понять невозможно, огромные паузы. Зачем? Он когда по-японски трындит со скоростью ветра, выглядит и умным и обаятельным, а сражаясь с английским (уже 7ой год!!!) наоборот, все это теряет, и ум и обаяние.

    • @tonya--7704
      @tonya--7704 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree. Conversational English is one thing - hi, hows it going, what's new, where are you going. But they are expecting him to think in complex English and give detailed explanations on the technicalities of figure skating. He is a rockstar. He can afford his own personal translator for this kind of thing. Someone who doesn't stumble over the nuances of his replies and understands English very well because I think some of his statements aren't being translated with the depth of language as his Japanese replies seem to need. I've seen some of his interviews that were captioned into English and they are remarkable.
