  • Mainz Hauptbahnhof | Walking around Mainz Central Station, Germany | 4K 60fps
Hi Walkers, today we walk around the Central Station or Hauptbahnhof of Mainz in Germany. Mainz Hauptbahnhof ("Mainz main station", formerly known as Central bahnhof Mainz) is a railway station for the city of Mainz in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate. It is used by about 60,000 travelers and visitors each day and is therefore by far the busiest station in Rhineland-Palatinate. The station was a trial area for a CCTV scheme using automated face recognition.

Very enlightening. I was stationed at Mainz-Gonsenheim (1978-80) Army.... I lived in the Robert E. Lee Barracks for 6 months, then was able to get an apartment in Weisbaden -Kostheim (1979-80) and did an earlier tour at Frankfurt (1968-69). I have watched the walking tour of Mainz, a pictorial film of Robert E. Lee Barracks at Mainz-Gonsenheim and watched a walking tour of Frankfurt. All the viewings were fantastic. They brought back many good memories. I would take a bus from Weisbaden-Kosteim, crossing the Rhine River to the Mainz Hauptbahnhof then transfer to a "strasse" to go to the Robert E. Lee Barracks. I would buy a monthly pass to ride the "strasse." At the end of the work day I would reverse the procedure. MY QUESTION is - Did the Mainz Government do a major remodel of the Hauptbahnhof? I traveled there daily. I do NOT remember the many shops on different levels, the steps and the escalators. I remember eating at the Hauptbahnhof almost daily (Bratwurst, pommes frits and cola!!!) and vendors selling flowers and vendors selling different items...such as baked goods. It was a wonderful experience. (They introduced a McDonalds "somewhere in Weisbaden" which I ate at once. We joked a G.I. could only eat at McDonalds on payday!!! And I do not remember those crowds at the Hauptbahnhof "looking like Americans!!!!" Back in the late 60's and 1978-80, one could always tell who were the Americans!!!! I do not remember backpacks. But now everyone has a backpack and cell phone!!! The Hauptbahnhof is still very clean, as it was ..."back then!" I did enjoy the video. Thanks!! And someday soon, I do hope to return to Germany to revisit all the places I was stationed at and the many cities and towns I visited in "West" Germany. It was....and I still believe Germany is a beautiful country. Friendly people and good food! Thanks again for the good memories!

Thank you very much for sharing your stories! It’s very interesting to hear your voices from the past. I believe so yes the government must be changing and upgrading the infrastructure like the train station. Cheers for your visit sometime in the future! 🍻
