Probably thinking of that Judd Apatow guy who’s movies are geared more towards high school sophomores. Not the first time someone has confused Mike Judge with Judd Apatow 🤦♂️
@@DanHarkless_Halloween_YTPs_etc Actually what happened was a guy called the tv station to complain because every morning he would get up early to watch tv and the programming would always run late. Meaning he'd always have to watch the end of Looney Tunes before before whatever he actually wanted to watch. All the characters got flanderized to a certain extent but a lot mostly just straight up changed character traits to fit the writers needs at random. A huge example is how Peggy's mom and Hank's dad both became hated by them despite loving them in the first season so it could appeal to a wider demographic.
@@xxxx-dl2tq I definitely agree with this. Her moving on from Buckley's death, rejecting her mothers delinquency, and leaving beauty school for college really helped portray her as a growing character but then she just flatlines at like season 8. Episodes like when she does the charcoal protest are pretty guilty of the "Luanne Dumb" trope
The show was funny because of how genuine it felt, these characters really felt like who they were supposed to be. The whole Hank Hill persona may not work with a different character. It really was good family fun, even the more adult themed ones. And they usually felt like they always had a nice family moment for a wrap up. We need Hank back.
I’m glad this exists, because stuff like this usually never sees the light of day and lost. King of the Hill is definitely one of those shows that left a great legacy, and to see this and know how far it went is great
They have also preserved the "Larry and Steve" original Family Guy concept that Seth MacFarlane got to air on Cartoon Network. That one is very different from what eventually became Family Guy
Ironically, Hank's reasoning for "being proud" of his son is actually the way it should be. No matter how your kids turn out, you should always be proud of them, because they need you to be.
@@bigbadseed7665 Loving them is a given. But pride is earned. You can’t just sit around and do nothing with your life and expect folks to be proud of you.
I love how Tress MacNeille provides the voices for all of Hank's family members. For Peggy, she does her standard middle aged woman voice, for Bobby, she does her standard boy voice, and for Luanne, she does her standard ditzy voice.
Dang o'l Boomhauer, I believe his speech in the Pencil Test was based on a Voicemail that Mike got complaining about Beavis and Butthead, But instead of Mellrow's place the Man said Porky's Butthole.
The speech pattern is actually based on a man he knew growing up, this line was the only thing he really took from this guy. I believe it was a neighbor or family friend.
I remember an interview of Mike Judge. At the height of the Beavis and Butthead cartoon he was asked what was his goal. He replied that he wanted to make a family oriented show on a major network. The host laughed out loud and then asked "What, are you serious?" The rest is history.
That just shows how strong the idea was and that they really put the work into making it great. Another good example of this is the SpongeBob pilot. It's almost indistinguishable from a regular season 1 episode.
Man, very little shows make their characters feel so real. This show genuinely makes the characters so, well, human, that it feels like they live right next door. Especially if you live in the south, that much is true.

Hanks first words about Bobby being that he's proud of him despite not always knowing how to explain why shows how well Mike Judge mapped out their relationship before the series even started.
God, Hank's introduction to Bobby is how I feel my dad's and I relationship is like. I don't feel like I'm doing anything worth noting, but he seems to be proud of me nonetheless.
Boomhauer’s dialogue is straight up from the voicemail that inspired his voice in the first place. Look up how mike judge came up with his voice for the details. The gist is someone left the station a voicemail to complain about Beavis and Butthead and being on the air and the man spoke with the same accent as Boomhauer. So he just used the man’s voice for the character.
