    This is a well thought-out video. It tells a story in a linear fashion. It illustrates the gentle genius of this hobby and the people to whom it appeals.

    I remember my oldest brother and his planes in the 50's and I started in 60's. Happy to see it is still alive.

    Beautiful film! Congrats to the NFFS and Bob Sowder for his masterful edits. Thanks also to Jonathan Nunez for his film capture of Vance Gilbert's beautiful Farman Goliath, and to Charlie Sauter for his clip of the launch of my Hodek twin in Geneseo, NY.

    Free flight is where most of us got started and if you like me, having been aero modelling for 60 years free flight is where you end, a return to the ultimate form of aero modelling.

      aero modelling can be a journey.. but ending up back where you started doesn't diminish the journey. There is something uniquely satisfying about the problem solving necessary in Free Flight and watching something you built with your own two hands take flight on its own!

    I can remember is it as a kid in the 40s my dad build them free fighting the first radio control plane in the area in Otto Illinois in got to go to nationals with him and 48. I think in Detroit with Rodu down in New Mexico and we flew down there control line and some free flight and it’s right at rudder but I get closer to that and one thing I remember that when I wanted to maybe he was building a glider I guess I’ve been on maybe five or six years and I came home and he told me he had a glider ready to fly so we went out to the college airport and now he’s route. Are you weed? He’ll hand launch that glider and almost hit the runway air to college and it must’ve been a little thermal there, and we change the thing across the desert and tell her one hour to say it was never recovered one test flight and lost. glider was many years in hours of building. Thank you for this.

    Thank you for the video. Question. Are your models weighing above 250g govern by the FAA rules on UAV?

    • @FreeFlightDigest
      @FreeFlightDigest  หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      pretty much all of Free Flight is sub 250g.. Indoor Free can be sub ONE grams..

      @billkuhl442 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @ongkimchoon7383 so far FAA rules are just for radio control.

      @@FreeFlightDigest Interesting. Some of the planes featured in the video had glow engines and I assumed, would be over 250g AUW.

      @@billkuhl442 Good to know US FAA does practice logical thought process unlike my country which have a habit of practicing one shoe size fit all regulation. Them believe in less work for the government department staff. Afterall, they hobbyist are the ones paying to keep the hobby going, so make them register and pay.

    Well, you didn't include the hand launched models. The old Thermic B was one, and the cheap balsa gliders, a nickel when I was a kid. I have lost many of them into thermals. The thermic B I could launch 100 or so vertical feet from a flat field, which is plenty of room for them to catch a thermal. I spend 10 years as a hang glider pilot. The problem with the models shown here is making sure they come back to you....

      With outdoor model at actual speed it is hard to see it as it gets small so fast.

    Stick a receiver and servos on it and suddenly it is illegal to fly unless you follow a bunch of mostly arbitrary rules. It is good to know the FAA hasn't ruined flying for everyone.
