      She was dedicated to serving others and if you speak to anyone that came in contact with her they have nothing but nice things to say. Thanks for watching!

    Very cool history! Glad to see some of these being preserved. Every time we see another old farmhouse fall, it makes us sad...all of the stories go with them. Mike & Connie...

      This old station is iconic and hopefully it will always be around for visitors. It can easily be seen from I-40. Thanks for watching.

    I really enjoyed this. It was nice to see Lucille's station up close. It's been many years since I was last there and actually got to listen to Lucille tell her stories about her life on Route 66. Thank you for the memories.

      You're welcome and I appreciate you watching. I never got to meet her or experience her store when it was open but I have heard nothing but good things from those that have she was an icon not only for route 66 but also for small businesses.

    I really love all the old school things in life. If only we could travel back in time for a day. I live in Harriman Tennessee. About 30 miles west of Knoxville.

      True, that type of work ethic is from a long ago era. My dad lived and worked and died just as Lucille in our little town in Michigan.... but almost unheard of today. Thanks again for your work~

      @RhettyforHistory  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Stitchy Rebel What kind of work did he do?

    • @sydneyadams4758
      @sydneyadams4758 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      He started as a Bell Hop at a hotel called the Hart Hotel of Battle Creek MI. In it's hey day it was a well known hotel and dad met many very interesting people...even some TV stars who stayed there. He worked up to Bell Captain and Desk Clerk. My mom and dad met working at that hotel, she was the telephone operator (remember those?) and dad the bell hop. He worked there all of his working life. We didn't have much during my growing up years as he earned mainly off from his tips....but we never wanted for food and a neat wee house that was filled with love......as I am certain it was for Lucille's 3 children. Those were happy days.

      +Stitchy Rebel Those are always the important things! Family and a love for your work. Seems to be lacking a little now. I will never have achieved a long working status as he had. That's definitely rare now. Thanks for sharing your story! Very near to hear it!

    When I was 13 I would run across the interstate and buy a 6pack of coors. I'd tell Lucille it was for my mom and she'd tell me mom doesn't drink coors and take my 6pack and get my ass back to the house

    Lucille's use to have the "Coldest Beer In Oklahoma!" I visited her there on several occasions. I last remember being there in 1990. There used to be single hut type houses behind that she rented out to motorists passing through. The string of newer units wasn't original.

      +Groff - Swint Media LLC™ Interesting, I passed by on I-40 before she passed but I never did stop at it. I never thought about doing it and I can't say that I ever even noticed it. I sure wished I had though. I would have loved to have seen how it was in operation. I've heard numerous people speak about how cold the beer was and how good her sandwiches were. Sounds like i missed out!

      She was a hoot! A fiery little lady, I'd sometimes stop just to get a rise out of her. She was a legend during the time I spent in the Lower Great Plains.

    Did you get to Commerce city Oklahoma ? Its a very small town by what was Pischer and Cardin. We were recently there and ate hamburgers at a lot stand which use to be a gas station way back. I love the way they've kept it original and they even have a pop bottle from one of the very first cola drinks in the US. So many things to see to little time

    Nice video. However, it is my understanding that Lucille and Carl divorced in the mid 1960s, and Lucille continued to live there and operate the facility until her passing in 2000. The "motorcourt" you refer to is NOT actually that-It is a newly constructed Office building with space for lease. The original motorcourt was beyond repair, and torn down years ago.......

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes they did divorce. I didn't tell a lot of the back story as it is a little sad and tragic. Her son got mixed up with a woman out west that was bad news. He was murdered by that woman and he can be seen in that same cemetery. Lucille didn't have the easiest life by any means. As far as the motor courts I wasnt sure if those were redone or if they were even original. As you walk around to the back you can see sort of a garage entrance. What is interesting is how it looks like you can rent out the rooms. They had for rent signs on them anyways.
