A year bookended by the Winter Olympics in Beijing and the FIFA World Cup in Qatar could be a sporting world low-point, offering a world stage to authoritarian regimes looking to cover up their questionable attitudes towards human rights. Despite the ostensible desire of global sporting institutions to separate sport from politics, these competitions are far from an apolitical game.
