I feel like you could have asked some more hard-hitting questions about what he had control over what he did and didn't have control over, and some of the more specific instances which upset fans. I appreciate that responding too candidly to such questions may have put him in a precarious position with GW. But even he knew you were dancing around these issues and said as much.
It’s a fair point - some of those questions have been lost in the edit. Assuming you’ve watched the full length version, he essentially said that the bosses decided the direction of the stories and development of the game, he put flesh on the bone. He often didn’t have memory of why some decisions were made (or had conveniently forgotten) and you’re quite right, he still works with GW so didn’t want to anger anyone. And to query specific instances of writing people were upset by felt a bit too personal to me, plus there are so many things people have criticised to specifically ask about each felt unfair - a lot of this stuff was over a decade ago so it’s unlikely there’d be a satisfying answer. But in the full one he talks a bit about some of the reasons for changes to Necrons, Space Marines and The End Times.

Where did the 'spiritual liege' line come from then??? Because if memory serves, it came from an article he wrote/was interviewed in, in a white dwarf..... Sooooo. Respectfully. While I absolutely and totally agree that abuse isn't nice, I'm entirely sceptical of his claims. Its very easy for him to change his opinion after the fact. It's entirely possible that his, or someone else's choice of words was poorly thought out. This whole "it's subjective" is very much a cop out. Yes this is a creative medium, but a universe has an internal logic, and fans are quick to point out when this logic is broken. And unfortunately, developers are much less quick to take an L it appears. Regardless. Thank you very much for the content. And thank you to Mr Ward for sharing your perspective with us!!!
Because the ultramarines are the template. Other chapters do view them like that. It’s been that way since Rick priestly wrote the lore in 2nd edition. Calgar IS the spiritual liege of the codex compliant chapters, with a few exceptions.

The thing that makes me laugh is that there is plenty of Matt Ward's work that is still there in the lore. People just don't realize it because they like it.
The problems people have with Matt Ward are many fold. He wrote a SM codex that was wildly OP and made up lore to hype them even more to the detriment of other factions. He wrote a demons of chaos army book for 7th edition WHFB that KILLED the whole edition because of how OP it was. He also made Grey Knights absolutely OP with some cringeworthy lore to boot, and then there’s the whole mess with the End Times (the problem there was the execution, which was extremely shoddy and disrespectful towards established characters, we all know what the editorial mandate was). These are all specific examples but the general problem with Matt Ward was he kept overhyping what he was working on to the detriment of other factions and even the game system. When you release something completely broken in an ecosystem like 40K or WHFB you can generate short term sales but you also ruin the game in the medium and long term. And when you release lore that brutalizes other factions just to make the one you are working on look cool the effect is similar (or when you take an old piece of in character lore intended as propaganda and make it become true to the detriment of a whole faction and characters people love…). All in all Ward’s work was very shallow and he certainly did nothing to resist the worst decisions coming from guys like Merrett
I see he still doesn't get it. He was a fan boy who was over promoted and nearly ran GW into the ground with his aggressive attitude towards the fans. Abuse is wrong but when you are accusing anyone with any kind of criticism of being a hater then it isn't exactly unexpected. He has such a victim complex
Personally I don't know how you get that assessment from this video - he's far from aggressive towards fans and in terms of a victim complex he seems if anything to be downplaying the weight of abuse he received.
I’m pretty so most fantasy players hated the daemons books he is credited for writing, which absolutely destroyed the balance of 7th Ed (along with dark elves and vampire counts). 7th Ed probably in general, had the worst books of any edition.
You may be right - I didn't delve into Fantasy much because i'd not played it much during his time so wasn't as knowledgeable to challenge him on it. Apologies for not asking more!
