On point!!! I live down here in texas and i do the same thing with my c-rig. Tried the braid to fluro to see what ppl was talking about. Everytime on a hook set , the line would pop at the hook. Fluro to fluro same lb test, never snapped on a hook set!
Yep, I fished a BFL on Rayburn years ago as a co and my boater was whacking them on a C rig. So I rigged one up on a flipping stick. I lived outside of Shreveport then and had braid on it cause that’s what I used to flip up there and was too cheap to respool. I broke off more leaders than I care to remember. Probably had the drag as tight as I could get it, but was too frustrated to adjust it. Your videos on Carolina rigs are always the best. Keep spilling the beans!
I used to throw a Carolina rig in the 90’s a lot on Rayburn and Toledo when I fished the Redmans and Bass n bucks. I have no clue why I quit throwing it. I’m getting a rod together this week to add it back in to my arsenal. Thank you Todd
hadt the same complaints about spinning rods a while back, so i took a 7-2 med-fast casting rod and ground off the finger knob behind the reel, changed the two lower rod guides, and mounted a spinning reel on it. nice stiff little spinning set up.
I don’t throw Carolina rigs hardly ever. But damn this was some good info. I never would have even thought about some of the stuff in this video. Thanks Todd! Good stuff. Really good
I understand your level of perfectionism about these small things. I obsess over things like breaking my line, or lost fish, and if I feel like something is my fault I will change things systematically one at a time until I can Isolate the problem, and then experiment until I find the solution. So over the years I've developed a lot of ways to do things that are often very different than the "common knowledge" that is out there. Like you I don't claim that my way is the only way because a lot of people do things differently that may mean their solutions should be different to solve the same problem. But what it all boils down to is that you have to be willing to analyze everything and be willing to suck it up and change something when it's not working for you. By the way, that tip you gave about the Sunline Xplasma braid, and how it doesn't get the wind knots around your rod is a life saver. Thank you so much for that one!
So true! I tried braid main line on my c-rig last year because of a YT video. 50 lb braid with 15 lb Big Game leader. I ended up straightening a couple hooks on hook sets. Then I broke the leader line on the hook set. Switched back to 20 lb Big Game for both after that.
I like the way you think Todd. Some people are kinda ridiculous in their way of thinking. They think there is some big secret that is so much better. No,go fishing and get bit.Thank youTodd.
Great video. I do both braid and fluoro main lines. I have a couple older 7'3" fast action medium heavy rod that won't break me off or straighten hooks out when using braid. They have more of a moderate fast action to me. Anyway, I don't mind using braid on those. All my XF rods are fluoro main line only for me if c-rigging with them. I know some guys on Toledo that will only throw c-rigs. They will have 8 different rigs on the deck with varying leaders and weights and baits. They will use spinning gear with braid main lines on their lighter setups.
What are tour thoughts on rigging a c rig for floating a bait vs flat on the bottom? I use 2 setups. 1 to drag- 20# to 20# fluro and 1- 20# to 17# mono
I haven't used braid to litter in couple years now. I did do it for years. But I got tired of tieing on new litters & I didn't think I could tell much of a difference in casting distances? So I've been back on straight floro, mono
Some really good tips, that nobody talks about, great video Todd thanks for sharing the knowledge love the Carolina rig,I kinda have to being from NC lol
A weird c-rig trick that nobody does, run a deps cover scat or osp spinnut on it. You can actually get it to walk the dog like a spook but on the bottom. It's a lot of work but there are times when it is worth it. The only time I like braid on a c-rig is if I'm having problems with the weight hanging up in rocks. Using braid will help keep the weight from digging since it floats. But I also use 30# Sunline saltimate fluoro shock leader because it is made to stretch without weakening like most standard fluorocarbon lines. It absorbs shock and stress really well without over stretching/weakening and it returns to form much better.
Good stuff, Todd! To me, you are like the king of the Carolina rig. Lol well for that matter all of you Texas guys. I can tell you we don’t use it enough in Georgia.
On the St. John’s river is fished a c-rig for years. Best setup for me was a one ounce egg sinker, 20lb flouro main line. Rubber bead instead of glass. 10 pound flouro leader 6ft. To a straight shank owner hook 1/0. Lews med./heavy speed stick. That’s with a straight zoom trick worm. Dunno why for sure best I could use out there. Broke less leaders , hooked every fish that would bite. Plus I would get three hookups to the guys fishing c-right on the same boat. Tiny hook like that but I boat flipped five and six pounders when it was hot fishing with no prob. Different set up with glass bead and braid I’d break 20lb leader. Get a lot less bites with braid or a heavier leader. That’s my 2 cents for st. John’s shell bars.
Todd, do you fish a C rig on highland lakes without vegetation? None of the lakes I fish in Ky have grass. I do occasionally fish a CRig but not as often as I probably should.
I used to fish c-rig religiiously won lots of money on it , but I did 50# braid and 20# flouro leader mostly because over time I noticed "hard spots" on the bottom that would hold fish. It also wore more arms out casting this way , so now just flouro all the way ,but can't feel those juice spots as well, maybe for you tourny guys you could use it with curved in hook prefishing , an idea.
Todd, How about doing a Carolina Rig live show or interview with some of the local C-Rig guys like Danny Iles, Brian Shook Cory Rambo, Stephen Johnston, Kris Wilson and Harold Moore.. Some of those guys. Similar to the show you done with Chris McCall about Trap fishing . That would be interesting. Anyway good content, I enjoyed this one and your other recent Carolina rig videos.
As a co-angler I use 15 to 12 as a leader so if I get hung-up, I can break off and not lose my whole rig. If I was a boater, I would do what you do and keep it simple with the same main and leader line.
Thanks Todd.Maybe guys use braid to cast farther? And use a lighter leader because they want that leader to break so they dont lose the whole rig? I dont think people are breaking off on fish, but breaking off on snags most the time.Maybe guys dont have problems with there set ups.Just a matter of prefrence.
I keep a Carolina rig tied on in the kayak all year. But I don't use a traditional c-rig. I use 2 bobber stops, one on each side of my weight. That way I can move/adjust my length between hook & weight. Or peg my weight to my bait, or slide the top bobber stop up my line so my weight can freely slide like a traditional texas rig. I guess its more of a adjustable texas rig. But most of time I keep weight separate. So it's like a c-rig with no bead. But like you mentioned in your last video. I have been using lighter weights because I was in shallower water. So I have a 3/4 on it now. Try that out. Definitely keep in on bottom better

You have to use a mono leader

You bet

Thanks for the info. That explains why I keep breaking off
Between the 2. Lines. Very good point. 🧐🧐
I’ve used the c-rig a few times but I guess I need to build me a c-rig set up.
Agree with your logic on the Carolina Rig, as I do what you do as well, but I do use all Flouro on spinning gear.
So true! I tried braid main line on my c-rig last year because of a YT video. 50 lb braid with 15 lb Big Game leader. I ended up straightening a couple hooks on hook sets. Then I broke the leader line on the hook set. Switched back to 20 lb Big Game for both after that.
Great tips. Never looked at it that way.
Awesome Intel!! Do you ever throw the pre-made C rigs??
Thanks for the No BS approach and keeping it real.
Never, maybe they are good maybe not I just think they are gaudy
I like the way you think Todd. Some people are kinda ridiculous in their way of thinking. They think there is some big secret that is so much better. No,go fishing and get bit.Thank youTodd.

Palomar
Plus I couldn't get braid to cast very good for some reason

I almost always use mono for the leader usually 15 pound seaguar to 17 pound mono stren

I will try this in Michigan this year you have convinced me it’s worth a try what would you recommend for fishing it here in Michigan

Excellent video Todd, I love C-Rigs buddy
Great analogy

Hey Todd: Love your Carolina-rig advice. For 10" Ribbontail Worms do you go bigger than 3/0?
Yes I’d throw a 5/0 if it was something like an ole monster
Thanks for the confirmation (I have been very happy with the Gamakatsu 07415.)@@toddcastledinefishing5924
Todd, do you fish a C rig on highland lakes without vegetation? None of the lakes I fish in Ky have grass. I do occasionally fish a CRig but not as often as I probably should.
Yes big time, not sure if I was recording back then but let me see if I can find some old videos.
Awesome stuff

Stephen would be good, Cory would be good I know them pretty well. Don't know of some of the others would want to give up some juice.😂
Those two would be good. Yeah some of them may not want to give up the goods 😃
Word.

I like the way you think. I can go for that
You are a thinking man!!
7'6" Heavy or Med Heavy?
I edited it in the description with the link, but it's a heavy 7'6 fast
I have had this issue a few times lol

In. Minnesota Iff your a. Walleye fisherman. It’s a Lindy rig. Caught big walleye that way over a lifetime.
Have you experimented using rubber peg stops on your C-Rigs? Then you only have one knot to attach your hook.
Braid also can add to putting bigger hole in the fish’s mouth

How much $$ you think Rusty Clark (just to name one guy) has won on the ole ball and chain.
Way more than everyone in Texas, Kris Wilson would be second
