I'm watching this series again because it is so good. All the cast members, all the scripts and dialogues, the sets, and those awesome period costumes are high quality in every way. Thank you for this wonderful series. As it comes to an end, I am glad I found Endeavour and keep re-discovering it.

Shaun Evans is a brilliant actor, subdued, breathing life into this character with ciphers, small gestures, looks. It must be a challenge to play a character so sketchily drawn.

@@robertolee1730 Shaun was Morse from the very first shot and we only saw his back. He says he never watched Inspector Morse, but it’s eerie how he inhabit Morse physically in many ways as John Thaw did. When he handles a telephone, or put on his coat, or touches the back of his neck while he’s thinking… I see John. I see John in his eyes even though Shaun’s are gray and John’s were a brilliant blue. The spirit looking out from them feels the same. That’s why I think Shaun won the part-his eyes. The two actors have no other physicality in common. Shaun is a lanky boyish looking redhead and John certainly was none of those things. But the eyes of both are magnetic and windows to a very deep soul.

Strange sure is the dark horse! I really didn’t see that coming, but it makes perfect sense. There was the moment where Jim says to Joan, “Mind how you go”. Yes, it’s an idiom of the local parlance, but, even so, it always seemed a bit by-gone days whenever Fred says it, as he is in a way, but a good way. Thursday is old school, but in all the best of what that means. When Strange said it to Joan, it made me see the similarities between Jim and Fred. They’re cut from the same cloth. He would be the kind of person that Joan would feel the most comfortable and safe with. He’s more stable, and would be family oriented. He would be a better match for Joan, and quite the son-in-law for Fred. In a scene in Terminus, Thursday and Strange are basically dressed identically! Literally cut from the same cloth ~ lol!
We can’t help but want everything for Endeavour. He’s the protagonist; the eponymous, central character. But, we have to face that the Morse we know from, “Morse”, had to become the bit of a tragic figure he became, some way, yes? Endeavour became Morse through so much emotional loss. Shutting himself off lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy of never having lasting, nurturing relationships.
We should want better for Joan, although our hearts break for Morse.

My Lord, Sean Rigby has lost weight! Looking very dapper. From the moment we saw Jim at the top of the stairs in “Girl” I knew he was “Strange” to the life. If you’ve watched Inspector Morse, you know that Jim Eventually becomes Morse’s boss as the DCS of Thames Valley. We never meet Mrs. Strange, But to envision her as Joanie Thursday adds a whole other layer to their backstory. Endeavour begins by out ranking a lowly PC Who becomes his friend, Only to rocket past
him in promotion and then steal the girl he loved. The two became estranged over the Masons and never recover their friendship, but they retain a mutual respect for one another, even if the future DCI Morse will continue to be a giant pain in the ass to the future DCS strange as an employee. And, if you watched Inspector Morse all the way till the end, do you know that Jim is sitting by Morse’s bedside when he dies. If Joan winds up with Jim, she will have a happier and more peaceful life than she ever could with Endeavour, the self pitying and emotionally closed off alcoholic. Faint heart never won fair Lady, and Morse Is too damaged to make anyone happy, least of all himself.

@@Sarah_9132 Shvorne Marks is gorgeous and I enjoyed the Monica storyline. It was quite bold of Russell Lewis to put it in but ultimately it could not go anywhere. Morse never takes a wife, and certainly not a black one. I do not think the character of Endeavour was inherently racist by any means, but this romance as presented was decidedly more of our time than what Is supposed to be 1967. Even supposing that Oxford in the 1960s was more open minded toward integrated couples than the United States would have been at that time, I find the character of Monica much too forward with the white bachelor policeman who lives on her hall. Standards of conduct for nurses at the time were very strict… As a single woman, She might’ve even been compelled to live in a dormitory if she was not living with family. It doesn’t seem very likely to me that a young woman living alone would feel so comfortable barging into the apartment of an unclothed male neighbor such as Monica did. As a young lady of color, she would be even more circumspect about being overly familiar with a white man she’s only just met. Also with the realities of the time being what they were, I doubt rental buildings were integrated. Monica seems to be welcomed without comment into Apartment buildings, pubs, and department stores where all the other patrons are white. The scene where she in Morse are rolling around together on a mattress in a department store and are invited to do so by the store clerk who assumes that they are a couple feels particularly unrealistic. Russell Louis is depicting of course how it should have been according to our modern sensibilities, not how it was. There is a plot line in the series “inspector George gently” which is set in the 60s contemporaneous with endeavor, in which the senior officer advises his junior colleague that continuing a romance with a black woman would be career suicide. No such conversation ever takes place here, even though Fred seems to be acquainted with Monica. He knows about her at any rate, since he goes to her when he’s looking for Morse. George gently is set in the North, But I have a hard time believing that Oxford would’ve been so progressive that everyone would have accepted Monica without question as Morse’s girlfriend. The other show is far more realistic. Monica is simply a plot device, and she deserved far better because she is a very lovely person. In fact none of the female characters in the series get to do much other than prop up our hero. It might be nice to see an offshoot series dealing with being a young black professional woman in Oxford. I would say the same for Miss Frazil and the departed WPC Trewlove… Each of these women could have interesting stories to tell in her own right, but get wasted as minor supporting characters.

I think Fred would approve the match. Young Strange is a lad with prospects, Being a company man through and through. He will be the DCS one day. And he is a self-confident and emotionally healthy individual who does not have a drinking problem and he knows how to treat a woman in a romantic relationship. Morse Is the brighter one by far, but he winds up alone for a reason. Too many demons. Fred regards him as a son in many ways But Morse is too unstable to be a good partner for anyone. I
I would’ve preferred to see Morse end up with WPC Trewlove. I think she was more like endeavor in her make up, being career driven, and very smart in the ways which he is smart. It might’ve worked between them because she would have given him space to breathe. Joan had always been boy mad and Easily influenced by bad boys.

The most interesting and touching relationship is that between Morse and DCI Thursday. - Though Morse's loneliness is hard to bear, I no longer consider a close personal relationship between Morse and Joan Thursday to be possible or desirable for him. Professionally, Joan is not a competent social worker. Social work means "supporting a self-determinate und compentent life" and not constant unnecessary evaluation and intervention, especially not in a conflict between her parents or in Morse`s police questioning of an adult witness.

I really don't care what the explanation is. It's way too late in the series to make this sort of drastic change. It would have been slightly more plausible to bring in some guy she met while she was away in Season 7 than put her with Strange. @@peterburke3944 Hi Peter, I love your idea of Joan returning with a new partner and an adopted child! That would have been great. Her adopting might even reflect back on the sense of loss she must have felt during her miscarriage in Harvest. You know, there are so many ways Russ could play this, and since he’s the writer and will have his way, all we can do is toss around our own ideas. If I were writing the show, lol, I would have a dramatic moment where Endeavour finds out that Joan is dating Strange. Maybe first some bad thing happens involving the Masons, then Strange himself lets slip he’s seeing Joanie. Endeavour would flip out enough to hasten to her flat and actually ask her to give him another chance. How about that coffee, Joan (he’d ask, using her first name, finally). Joan would smile and say yes and they’d leave the flat together. END SHOW. Haha. That way, we’d all know they never got together since Morse is alone, but we’d be free to have hope they were happy for a little while. Thanks for listening to my ramble!
