  • Sharing my approach to growing houseplants in semihydro or LECA. I've gotten quite a few requests regarding this topic so I am going to share how I go about growing my plants in LECA. I am not an expert and definitely not saying this is the correct and/or only way to go about it but this is the way that has worked for myself and my plants. Hopefully you guys find this somewhat helpful and answers some of your questions. If you have any more questions that I did not address in the video please feel free to write them in the comments section below.
Thank you so much for watching and please don't forget to comment, like, and subscribe. I really appreciate it!

The best no fuss video. No drilling of holes or PH measuring. I use filtered water and that’s been working for my plants .

don't you need to use fertilizer when you use leca or semihydro? since the plants aren't getting the nutrients from soil?

Awesome that your plants are doing so well!! I would put a disclaimer that this is your current routine with leca and not a tutorial on how to convert a plant, as many people will not know that converting plants to semi hydro is a very involved process that requires cleaning the roots thoroughly, etc. (: just want to make sure no one tries to convert based off your routine video then have their plants die...which would be their fault for not doing the research but you know how people are these days...😂😂😂

I tried leca with orchids, I only have 2 orchids left, a mini orchid in leca & it seems to be surviving. The other is an older orchid & roots didn't do well, started rotting in leca so I placed in in orchid mix & thriving. I've learned both orchids need watering almost daily but I just squirt a small am out for quenching.

Thank you for doing this. I've seen your semi-hydro plants in your other videos and wondered how you were doing them in jars. I have been using the leca+jar method to root plants for several months and it works well. I have only converted one actual plant to leca and only because it had mealy bugs that I couldn't seem to get rid of. It was good to see your method with jars with no side/drain holes. And I'm with you on the PH-testing. I would really not be up for all that.

One other thing. I like your little "mat" that you use for potting. I always have to do my leca stuff outside because while those balls are cleaner, they roll everywhere when one gets loose!

Just started with leca, watching lot of different people and their experiences with it.
I like the simplicity of it, like no dirt that rots, less pests, and you can fertilize exactly, as nothing is "lost" in the dirt.
I do see more people changing to pon, so I might get into that later..
Right now, I am just testing out, and having fun with this hobby.

I love that you keep it simple and realistic. I also have the same philosophy: 1. if it's working, don't change it up too much. 2. don't overcomplicate things. If it gets too cumbersome, I might abandon it all together, which would not be good. lol Looking forward to more of your videos!

You’re excellent at this type of video, good job 👍 . Subscribed. Clear, direct, quick explanations on how to get it done, much appreciated. I have been watching a bunch of videos on doing a semi-aquatic situation for inside my shower/tub enclosure as I have a rain shower head directly over my large jetted tub with a tiled surround edging where I could set plants, and I needed to know which plants might work getting doused regularly with water and how to do soil-free growing for obvious reasons. This video was almost perfect. The only thing I would have asked you if I could was what the light requirements were for each plant-but I can look that up myself. I have medium to low light in there, so I need a plant that can handle that.

Do you continue to add nutrients in the winter? Or is it okay to water with just plain water?

I only fertilize about once a month - the other times I just water with regular water. 🙂

Hi. Are your glass jars have holes above 1/3rd of the glass? If yes, is it okay not have holes? Ty :)

Pleasant voice and informative. But we don't need the background noise that's at the same or greater volume as your voice. I couldn't finish.

do you have problems with algae growth in the transparent containers? and do you have tutorial on how to wash out or flush semi hydro in transparent countainers? thank youu

Whenever I see the algae buildup getting to be too much in the glass containers I would empty out all of the LECA along with the plant and clean it. Unfortunately that is the only way I found to clean the containers.

I have noticed that if I leave that much water on my philodendrons I get root rot, I have converted other plants that looooove sitting in that much of a reservoir, like polka dot, spider plant, fittonias caladiums but most of my monsters got badly root rot by letting them a water reservoir, now I am wondering if it might have been the nutrients rather than the water... have you had any issues with root rot? and pests? I have seen a few times some larva like insects playing around the leca. Thanks for sharing :)

interesting. Maybe try water propagating first so you have water roots and therefore no issue with root rot. Check my videos for how to do it.
