Gotta love the intermediate sized cars of the late 60s and early 70s.

Really, they were well over 200 inches long, our huge '68 Bonny was 224 inches long. Parking lot spaces were bigger then. My '67 Catalina, GM's intermediate, stretched out 207 inches.

Happy holidays! I love how the list quite precisely prioritises those vehicles that embody "mid-size" in their respective markets, rather than those which would be comparably mid-size through an American crucible; we didn't build many of the latter out here in the rest of the world.

And the difference in size would continue to grow.

I agree with your comment to @Mark1405Leeds about the Jag being iconic. My Dad had one; a delightful car to ride in. His was 10 years old when he bought it, but it was low mileage and pristine inside. He loved that car.

My first car was an R-10 and it was great. Great mileage, tough enough to to off road, and 4 people could pick it up and carry it back to pavement. Incredibly comfy front seats, and an occasional engine fire out back.

Excellent video for the content. I liked how you covered the world and put all that footage together. That is some work. It shows. What is interesting is what they called midsized in the 1960's is now considered fullsized in 2023.

    • @thehopelesscarguy
      @thehopelesscarguy  ปีที่แล้ว +1

I space is much more effectively used now, but the proportions just don't flow like they used to.

@@thehopelesscarguy Well stated. This is indeed true. Prime example: Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger. big on the inside but smaller on the outside. Both are less than 200 inches long. Some of the midsized cars got larger( Honda Accord and Toyota Camry).

    Another great video.
I love seeing the foreign cars with their American “counterparts “(🤣).
Some cars are missing from your list:
    France:
    Citroen Ami,
    Simca 1100 or 1301/1501,
And somewhere in these videos, so far I’ve not heard of the
    “Autocars Co. LTD”
    Israel.
They made the Susita, and the Sabra.
[ the Sabra being a reworked Reliant Saber sports car.]
The Susita was made with help from the Greek “Attica” automaker.

The Buick's were quits stylish! Can't understand why anyone in the USA bought the British crap! Had a Watrburg in the seventies - a fantastic car with an engine like a turbine!

There is a local Mark II Jag with a Paisley vinyl top and I would say it might be the most 60s car I've ever seen.

The Rebel was priced at €2,900? I think we mean dollars, not pounds. Nobody ordered an Oldsmobile Cutlass with a six-cylinder engine. Nobody. It was an option that never saw the light of day.

The Ford Cortina was not all that bad for a British car. A teacher had the wagon.
As with most cars back then, they tended to rust away quickly. Other than that, I was pretty reliable. More for city driving. It wasn’t designed for the U.S. Interstate driving, or the Autobahn.
Mostly it was British Leland that were so horrible, and Roots Group had problems with Striking workers, but ALL the auto manufacturers in Britain did.
Ford and Vauxhall were pretty good.
[ Vauxhall was owned by General Motors ].
