      Best invention on roads. Don't like waiting at stop lights when the roads are empty, feels like a stupid thing. Also less chance for a nuts to crash into you because driving on red/yellow light. And less traffic congestion.

    Hi I just wanted to say thank you very much for your videos. My test is on Monday, and I'm really nervous but your videos make so much more sense to me than my instructor does sometimes!🤣 I've been learning to drive since I was 17, I'm 20 this year but stopped having lessons after a car accident, but recently gained the confidence to go out again. Hoping I pass, but if not I'll take the test as some experience and book straight back in! Thank you😃

    5:35 you should be able to go here. If the car ahead does what it is supposed to do, i.e. go around the centre, you would have enough time to cross it safely. The issue is that people cut corners all the time.

    This is very simplistic. There are other mini roundabouts where the car turning right will have to stop. Many people think once they are turning right and have indicated to do so at a mini-roundabout, they have priority of passage. WRONG. At some mini-round abouts the one turning right has got a give way sign and the road marking on the approach on their lane has two lines. That means what it indicates on their approach that they should rather give way. There are two signs 1) give way sign 2) on the ground there are two parallel lines but they think so far as they are turning right they have priority of passage. Another video should be uploaded to show this typ of mini roundabout

    Clearly very few have watched this video . . . Or if they have, they have not understood the advice.
    Mini roundabouts are a distinct danger because many drivers will simply not give priority to cars approaching from the right - I came close to a collision on my way home this evening because of this very problem . . . I really do think you should include this on your video . .
    WHEN APPROACHING A MINI ROUNDABOUT TAKE EXTRA CARE TO BE READY FOR AN EMERGENCY STOP AND/OR AVOIDING ACTION . . .

    At 5:40 in the video you said you must give way because they're coming from your right. But you're also their right?
    If you both entered the roundabout and then they indicated whilst on the roundabout to come acorss you and you had to swerve away from them as for them not to hit into you who would be in the right?

      Yh that’s extremely unacceptable, Some drivers would go onto the roundabout thinking you will go around the isle, giving them enough time, but cutting it would cause a collision

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      5:30 They do not turn in accordance with the rules in The Highway Code and if one did this on a Driving Test you would incur a fault, possibly serious fault depending on circumstances. In this example we have already stopped and they can see we are giving way to them. Pragmatically it works provided they are aware about any other road users which may be a problem. There is a requirement on the rule to go around the roundabout and as a general minimum your front wheels should do this. A subsection to the rule deals with large vehicles such as big lorries which might legitimately drive straight over the island because of their massive size. When cars do this typically it is more about their speed which is not a correct interpretation of the rules.

    Francis do you need to indicate left when exiting a roundabout if you are going right on a mini roundabout?

  • @florinmoldovanu

    The Lexus at 5:33 and the van at 5:44 are at the same distance from the roundabout yet the instructor chooses to stop for the Lexus (even though the car had momentum) yet proceed when the van is approaching (even though the car was at a stand still).
    This goes on to prove that on 1st instance he made the stop on purpose in order to exemplify a situation (how it's done by the book) whereas on the 2nd instance shows his actual instinct as a driver (he fructified a gap in traffic like everyone would do - look at the cue of cars behind the van).
    A beginner driver should give themselves more time on approach in order to assess the situation whereas an experienced driver should be able to take that turn given the circumstances on the first go. The Lexus coming from the front had just as much time to pass the roundabout as the van did.

    Can you clear something up for me please.
    In this video you had a Volvo estate cut across the roundabout from your left as you were approaching.
    Is the rule that you give way to the right IF the vehicle is at the roundabout or IF they are approaching the roundabout.
    Reason that I ask is that near where I live there is one particular roundabout and people do go straight over it at ridiculous speeds despite the speed limit being 20mph as the road goes past a school. If approaching from the leg where you turn left or right you do take your life in your hands.
    Grid Ref : 53.520163, -2.667684 in Winstanley, Wigan.
    Cheers.

  • @millomweb

    3:40 If you both reach the give way line at the same time - carry on. If the car turning right goes properly round the roundabout, there is room for them. Many cut over the centre which is wrong then find themselves held up by the other car.
    As you demonstrate working at 4:04 LOL

    • @keith6400

      On four exit mini-roundabouts where two drivers turning right arrive at the same from opposite directions I think it is sensible for learners to time their approach such that the other car has come round more and give way to them. Whilst it is possible for both cars to proceed safely and complete their respective turns this is only possible is both cars arrive simultaneously, go round the roundabout at similar speeds and neither car cuts across the island. You have no control on the other car and if a near collision occurs on test, how do you think the examiner will mark the incident?

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@keith6400 Fair comment re learners. Knowing that instructors struggle with mini roundabouts, I suspect examiners do to. However, if there is an 'incident' and the learner is not at fault, the examiner should realise this and mark accordingly.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keith6400 I would like to see examiners' names on licences - so that records of bad driving can be kept for each examiner.
      Should a candidate have passed their test only to kill themselves a matter of months later (+a friend + badly injure another friend and the other motorist they hit) ?

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@millomweb Where I live mini-roundabouts exist very similar to the examples given in the video. These are very straight-forward easy to understand and deal with junctions. The difficult ones are on our urban main city through routes. The problems with these are more to do with there being up to three lanes on approach and queues of traffic waiting to join at each exit. It is not generally possible to negotiate these safely unless you understand about "blockers" and knowing about legitimate "shielding" will help too. I personally think the term give way to traffic coming from the right is inadequate because oncoming traffic can confuse people thinking this way, "is it coming from the right or not?". I like to think; give way to "Vehicles coming from the right which are going to pass across the front of you". This clarifies oncoming traffic and splits it into two groups with different relevance.

    • @millomweb
      @millomweb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@keith6400 You give way only to traffic on the roundabout. Knowing whether traffic is going to pass in front of you OR not is often not clear due to poor signalling by other drivers ! If they don't signal and stay on the roundabout and you collide with them, it's your fault. "Coming from the right" is very poorly understood. "Give way to traffic on the roundabout" is what is actually meant. MIni roundabouts are a bit of a fail on busy roads. 3 lane approaches also sound like a nightmare. I don't think a mini roundabout should have more than 2 lanes, IF THAT ! There is no need for the left lane to be part of the roundabout - it should just lead to the first exit only. Maybe that'd help a little.

    • @keith6400
      @keith6400 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I assume you mean three exit mini-roundabout. Quite often these are converted from a side road on the right. Your approach most likely will be on two lane section but there might be just one lane. I think the official view is that it is not generally required but signalling could be helpful to another road user. So depending on circumstances it may be a good idea. If you were on a one lane approach the oncoming traffic might be unsure if giving way was required and a signal from you might resolve this as you could be a non-signalling right turner.

      Did you see their left indicator on? That means that they were NOT approaching us from our right as they were leaving the roundabout early and not coming anywhere near our right side.

    3:41 Why do you have to stop for a car ahead going right?
    If you were going left, then you could do that by the time they get to you
    If you were going straight, then you could do that by the time they get to you
    If you were going right too, then you could pass each other no problem. So I don't see why you have to give way to cars ahead that are turning right. Please clarify why I may be wrong

    • @prog3142
      @prog3142 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you are able to safely go without affecting the other driver, as he did with the van then that’s fine. If you both reach the roundabout at the same time, then you should give way if the car ahead is turning right. Sometimes you might think you have enough time to go but you can’t predict the speed at which the oncoming driver will approach the roundabout, so I think it’s safer to give way.

    3:40... - "not just cars on our right that we have to consider giving way - yes it is. The roundabout is a circular road and you should give way to all vehicles on it.

    You don’t explain what happens if all four cars arrive at the same time?

    I don't see any difference between scenarios at 3:40 and 4:00. The extra car is irrelevant. The red car can go in both scenarios given that it is quick enough to get out of the way of the car inside of the roundabout.

    Those cars that turned right went through the roundabout. That’s a failure in the test isn’t it?

    i got a SERIOUS fault for doing as these two cars did at 7:41, i thought it would've been a minor
