I just watched it, the 3rd time for me, first time for the latest restoration. I was blown away- again. The camera angles, the contrasting light and shifting shadows, the powerful and unnerving presence of Orson Welles on screen- people who have not seen this one are living deprived lives. Fyi, Joseph Cotton is in it too, he plays a coroner and he is un-credited.
In my eyes, Welles made 5 masterpieces: Kane, Ambersons, Touch of Evil, The Trial, and Chimes At Midnight. All are incredible to watch time after time.
@ImJaredRoss Ambersons might be my personal favorite of his films. If you don't know the back story of the butchering of that film, read about it. And when you watch it, realize the last two scenes had nothing to do with Orson and his vision of the film. Having said that, what's left behind is still incredible and should be seen by any true fan of film. The Trial is a very confusing story that's based on a very confusing book by Josef Kafka. Learn about the book, then watch the film. It's still very hard to follow, but just focus on the visuals in this one. Orson created a post modern world that is absolutely terrifying. You won't believe your eyes, believe me. And Anthony Perkins is great in the lead. Both are essential if you're a Welles fan. And also check out Lady From Shanghai. Like The Trial, focus more on the visual than the wacky storyline. Plus Rita Hayworth with the short blonde hair is stunning. Sorry for rambling, but I get that way when I discuss Orson.
The mighty Welles. Thank heavens he is finally getting the appreciation who so richly deserves! We should also remember the wonderful Akim Tamiroff as Uncle Joe, a fabulous performance!
