Long Marston Airfield was until 1988 home of the Stratford Upon Avon gliding club, where they used that long runway for reverse auto tow. Basically a long length of piano wire with a glider on one end something meaty like a MOT failed Jag XJ6 (4.2 were more better at taking the load than a V12) and something heavy like a tractor to mount a big pulley on for the wire to run round. Jag driver puts his foot down to the floor does his best to do 60 mph down the runway while the glider pilot does his best to pull the back off the Jag by climbing at 45 degrees. Result glider ends up at 1000+ feet and Jag drops its end of the piano wire off at the launch point, where another Jag will be ready to start the process again. They did this till 83/84 when the farmer said "the dragsters need to build some removable armco", only it was not so the Gliding Club ended up using a winch on 2/3 of the runway before finding a home the others idea of Stratford at Snitterfield in 1988. The old RAF Snitterfield became available when first the old GPO radio car phone service ended and plans to use it to build a large low frequency radio centre to communicate with nuclear submarines was scrapped when tests showed they woukd have been at risk at blowing the lighting board at the RSC theatre in Stratford.
The irony of this series is that none of the journeys have been 'great' or even interesting, whilst the videos are hilarious and genuinely educational.
Unbelievable you missed commenting on the most important thing to have ever happened at Long Marston. The burning of the Crossroads Motel. Also, I remember watching a Vulcan take off from Long Marston. Sometime in the late 70's/early 80's. Flew straight over the top our house at very low level.

You know, the theater being a mishmash of different styles from different eras seems to really fit it. Somehow feels right for something meant to memorialize Shakespeare spanning so many different time periods considering the influence his works have had over the centuries.
Could have done more, parts of the rather large Long Marston site are used to store redundant trains. It also hosted the Phoenix music festival in the 1990s, which ended in (I think) 1996. There was an attempt to restart it a few years later but, ironically for a festival named Phoenix, it failed to rise from the ashes.
Great stuff, went a couple of time to the Long Marston raceway as a teen and also to my mate who lived at Wellesbourne - nice coincidences that make the video that little more special. Keep up the great work.

Very sad to see the end of Ling Marston raceway. In 2000 I bought a Yamaha R1. A few weeks later there was a Run Wot You Brung day at Long Marston. The R1 made a 9.8 second 134mph terminal speed at Long Marston. Not bad for standard road bike. I still have the print out showing the data. 😊
Had a family holiday in that area 45 years go. My parents thought we should go visit Warwick Castle, which us kids were less than thrilled about. Whatever they charged for entry back then, it was enough for my Dad to say 'bollocks to that' and we were spared a couple of hours of dreary history. Nice to see it's not changed.
My Warwick Castle Story: My wife and I were visiting on a late honeymoon (we'd married the previous July), and a friend lived in Warwick, so of course we had to do the castle. We parked (don't remember how much it cost), and were walking up to the castle as a marching band strode out. And on the 4th of July, an Australian high school marching band played "Waltzing Matilda" as we watched. Rest of the tour kind of paled in comparison. Except for the moment I was in the dungeon and got sick, but that's another story
Long Marston airfield is where they used to hold Global Gathering festival every year and also the Bulldog Bash. Regulations and costs saw the demise of those aswell
Not just £7 to park but somewhere north of £40 per person to get in to Warwick Castle, standing outside and flying a drone over was a wise choice….
For 25£ you can get a half an hour boat ride on the river near it!

Danke! Thanks for including St. Mary's Abbey, which had strong connections with my home county Rutland.
You should be a history teacher,I’ve listened and learnt more watching your videos over many months than year’s at school 😢.fantastic thanks
Finally on my home turf. Brilliant content and I look forward to the next episode.
The irony of this series is that none of the journeys have been 'great' or even interesting, whilst the videos are hilarious and genuinely educational.
Thank you for your kind enquiry but no I have not had a good week as I have had bastard covid.
Amazing series better than anything on TV.
Excellent tour.
I'm looking forward to the road trip around Staffordshire 😊
He ought to see RAF Fauld if he does Staffordshire. One of the biggest non-nuclear explosions in history.
The Warwick bypass had a hit song written about it by Nislopi
Long Marston was home to gods kitchen global gathering dance festival , was amazing weekend, loads of vids on line
Sad to see Long Marston derelict like that. I used to love going to the Bulldog Bash and the racing in the 1990's.
I've stayed in the Kenilworth Holiday Inn :)
Were you an illegal immigrant then?
my first job when i moved back it was old hotel name de montford hotel or something like that, my last night as i got restaurant manger the sack i got my self it but was given notice he was dismissed on night big event as he gave away £5-10k worth drink as he signed for it and left them to it they driven off. last night running the bar i decided to party with guests, buy one get one free and odd free shot and everyone i gave away i had one it was 6am when night porter came im said manager about to turn up i was so drunk i fell up the steps even had an illegal smoke with guests, no glasses got washed that nice they got recycled. i was wronged i got bar out debt to profit a new restaurant manger tried to take over my bar it was war after that. i had really fun last night, but as uk law says cannot give bad reference but can refuse and my mum old boss before a different surname i soon found a god night job running hotels over night for quite some years. but got out the hotel jobs now and id never go back, but always found ways to top up my wage
Outstanding in his field.
You know, the theater being a mishmash of different styles from different eras seems to really fit it. Somehow feels right for something meant to memorialize Shakespeare spanning so many different time periods considering the influence his works have had over the centuries.
you managed to squeeze a bit of railway in there, good on you xxxx
Could have done more, parts of the rather large Long Marston site are used to store redundant trains.
It also hosted the Phoenix music festival in the 1990s, which ended in (I think) 1996. There was an attempt to restart it a few years later but, ironically for a festival named Phoenix, it failed to rise from the ashes.
Great stuff, went a couple of time to the Long Marston raceway as a teen and also to my mate who lived at Wellesbourne - nice coincidences that make the video that little more special. Keep up the great work.
Long Marston Airfield also home to the Phoenix Festival in the 90's
Which ironically failed the attempted relaunch in the 2000s...
Awesome video on this Sunday
You ain’t lived until you’ve heard the Vulcan scream!!
The opening spiel gave me a great idea for a coffee-table picture-book'; '100 Most Picturesque, British Dog-Latrines for the Weekend Driver.'
Used to go there loads in the 90’s, Vw shows, phoenix fedtival there too, great memories of the raceway .RIP
As someone who was brought up in Henley In Arden, this is amazing nostalgia. It’s a shame about Long Marston, they used to have a fantastic biker festival called Bulldog Bash there.
Also Wellesbourne is pronounced “Wellsbourne” you can ignore the extra E
We were similarly shocked at the £7 cost to park at Avebury last year. Just some stones innit.
Raced my Turbo Mini at Shakspear raceway, good times!
I think the episode has has some of the best one liners so far. Great job Jon.
Can’t believe you came to my little town. Next time pop in for a coffee🤛🏼 Love the show and all you do.
Ahh Long Marston Airfield.. the home of Global Gathering... Fun times
Not for the locals it wasn't.
Had a family holiday in that area 45 years go. My parents thought we should go visit Warwick Castle, which us kids were less than thrilled about. Whatever they charged for entry back then, it was enough for my Dad to say 'bollocks to that' and we were spared a couple of hours of dreary history. Nice to see it's not changed.
ah some memories of Avon Park.
I ran my turbo supercharged Ibiza at that drag strip.
Lovely, thank you.
Spent many a weekends in those fields at the dragstrip
Another waste of a fantastic venue
Great memories 😊
Long Marston airfield is where they used to hold Global Gathering festival every year and also the Bulldog Bash. Regulations and costs saw the demise of those aswell
I like this video so I pressed the button specifically for that 👉🏻
Lucky devil ur first in the comments
I also pressed the button specifically for that!
I like this comment so I pressed the button specifically for that
I really liked it. I simply had to make do with button specifically for liking it though. It was the nearest option
John's Planes, Trains & Autos. Thanks for the tour M8. Take care & stay safe.
