I agree. When I first saw the print, I thought of a totally different way to model it. I wish I would have thought that way. I like the way he thinks. I am trying to learn to think that way. But everyone has their own style I suppose. He is good.

  • @samysnes

I find it more elegant to revolve the entire cone. This allows me to do the center bore in the same operation. I then negative extrude the empty space between two branches and circular pattern the negative space instead of the branch itself. This also allows me to draw the 22mm radius in the sketch and removes one fillet operation from the tree. The biggest downside to this method is that the cbore hole is not part of the circular pattern, but it still results in a more compact tree.

I can’t seem to get the counterbore hole in the right orientation, either it’s perpendicular to the curved surface or I place it at the bottom which makes it impossible to edit the way he did. Any solution to this?

Hi Craig, I was using the option "Enable on screen numeric input on entity creation". Go to Tools->Options->Sketch and look for "Enable on screen numeric input on entity creation" I have this checked, and also the option below it "Create dimension only when value is entered". This allows me to sketch normally without dimensions when I do not enter a value. Hover your cursor over the surface and hit the tab key. This will hide the surface body. If you want the surface body to reappear, hover your mouse over where the hidden surface was, and hit Shift-Tab to unhide the body. These techniques work for both solid and surface bodies.
As good practice you should delete the surface body after using it. Go to the Surface Bodies folder, RMB on the surface body and choose Delete/Keep Body. This will create a Body-Delete feature in the tree. Had I deleted the body, I would not have had to exclude the surface body from my simulation like i did at time 7:50

Just create another sketch. Then convert the edge entities of the corner that you are having trouble filleting with. Then Fillet the sketch with 30 radius. extrude the created contour up until the revolve surface. Hide the revolve surface again and THATS IT!

@@Repomam2000 He does go fast but this is also a great way to learn. There are lots of videos you can watch through out TH-cam on just about everything in Soldiworks. Some are defiantly better than others. If you are a student join FSAE or Baja. That will give you access to a lot of parts to look at and see how those parts were made.
Plus the point of Model Mania is to see just how fast a certain part can be made and then modified.

Very clunky way to model that shape.
Revolve the xz-plane profile, cut extrude a single leg with the main sketch terminating at the 120° planes then drive that angle by adding two equations: "qty"=3 and "angle"=360/"qty", add a c/bore hole and pattern the cuts and cbores linking them to the "qty". Finish off by adding the fillets.
Really the rads between the legs should be controlled with an offset from the central cylindrical face so that changing size doesn't detonate the model. Id also drive the offset around the c/bores from the hole feature.
But then I love to future proof models as I go.

Way too cumbersome. Construct it the same way as you would machine it. 1. Draw the three armed profile. 2 extrude to full height. 3. Use the conical profile to cut away the top. Continue with the counterbore holes and the voids.
