I love the first picture, knowing the story behind the picture. It's a honest picture taken in the bitter cold on a day, where everything just showed how the cold effects everything. Even the line up for the perfect picture.
Thank you for your insights. I too went “Wow” to your first photograph but maybe appreciate it even more when you pointed out its flaws when I went “I see what you mean” multiple times. Your professional eye, joy of sharing the details , and your calming voice makes your amazing photos and videos even better.
Your pursuit of perfection in your work is truly inspiring but remember always to use that inner drive to improve one picture at a time. What you consider as a throwaway we novice types just say WOW. Thanks as always for sharing and enduring the biting cold.
My wife and I thought the first image of the Block was amazing. Excellent video once again. Thank you for braving the elements for boat nerds everywhere.
You’re probably used to it by now and don’t notice this sort of thing but when you walked onto the beach I couldn’t help but notice the cloud bank out on the lake. I had to do a double take. It looks like you were in the Pacific North West with mountains behind the ship. Fun video. Nice pics. Always enjoy your compositions.
Yes, we too, are having fun keeping semis running and not gelling up, parts breaking that usually don't break and brakes freezing or getting cammed over. Aargh! I feel for you. But to tell you the truth, even though the first image you took of the block was unbalanced and distracting for you, I LOVED the mystical and surreal effect of that hastily taken image. It truly encapsulates the image of the frozen ghost ship from the smokey waters of the lakes. Yes, the main subject is blurred. Yes, the lens is a bit dirty, but in the original photo, you really don't see it, it blends into the foggy frame that makes it so fascinating for me. The enhanced image loses all that for me, but I do appreciate all the hard work you put into getting out there in the cold to get it. I have been awaiting your shots of this year's winter layup, you brought a smile to my frozen face today! Thank you and God Bless!
Excellent video as always. Sometimes the trials to obtain a photo are just as interesting as the photo itself. The photos looked fine to me, especially once a little cropping was applied. We're always the harshest judges of our own work! Hope you had a better experience shooting the Cort.
I have been waiting for your videos. You are so dedicated to your work to go out in that freezing weather. Such a professional. I hope you are okay. Nasty sneezes. Looking forward to the next one
You learnt a lot today, mainly how technology struggles with extreme temperature, maybe you should have a good old 35mm film camera as backup lol. But we as viewers experienced the beauty of your county on a cold winter day, such extreme temperatures are something we don't experience in our neck of the woods. While not perfect, the images you obtained portray the harsh winter environment these mariners, and "photographers", experience. l look forward to the next ship coming home.
Beautiful. I've discovered the cams at the Maritime Museum and watched all the ships come in. Unfortunately, Joe Block has been the only one that's come through the canal, and while that was pretty great, it isn't close to watching your footage even with the problems you encountered. 👍🍁
I have been waiting for your videos of winter layup ever since it started getting cold. How impatient is that? Sorry that you had so much trouble to begin the season and know things will be better. Keep up the good work and also the lessons for the amateur photographer.
Well Kevin, it's better to have tried and well sort of failed to your standards , than to not try at all, the bitter cold can really wreck havoc on a good plan. To us your pictures were amazing , thank you for fighting the elements to share wonderful experiences, travel safe
Like several of the commenters, I thought the first photo was terrific! On a humorous note, as the Big Joe Block was transiting from the Strait of Mackinac to the canal, her AIS destination was "VEGAS, BABY!"
Kevin, looking at the Block entering the canal entry; I have to disagree with your criticism of the photo. If you took the photo from further out then yes I get the issue of the composition. But what the photo does show is how small a hole the Block is entering. The end of the pier on the bow screams tight fit to me. Yep, I am a boat nerd and know how tight harbor entrances are on the Great Lakes. Clean up the shot in photoshop and be pleased. Sometimes the pro in you looking over the photo misses the picture right in front of you. No worries, we’ve all missed the forest through the trees. Dan
Hi Kevin. Geez, what a very frustrating day you encountered. It was painful to even watch this video. I could tell you were fuming and weren't happy or satisfield with anything. No matter how carefully a project is planned, something may still go wrong.....and it did for you. I follow ships each day throughout the Great Lakes. I may be wrong, but isn't the Block the only layup ship that has so far used the canal? They all used the Green Bay entrance. But as I'm writing this note, I see the Sykes off Two Rivers heading north to Sturgeon Bay. I bet she too will use Green Bay. Guess time will tell. Anyway, I'm sorry for all the problems you experienced. Keep your chin up. Things can only improve!
You are having the same problem I was having with our 2018 Subaru Outback. I joined a class action lawsuit regarding this matter. Subaru finally came up with a fix for this problem. It cost me nothing for repairs. Check websites for more info
Best laid plans…thanks for your chilly efforts. Very interesting editing commentary.

Despite the frustrations you felt that day, it still made for a wonderful video experience! Many thanks for sharing .
Your bad shots are still better than most folks really good shots. Lookin forward to the next vid!! Thanks!!
Thank you again. Well done. Happy your car got going. The freezing cold won't help.

Been looking forward to these!
I know your looking at those pictures with an artist eye, but to those of eyes who look through non artists eyes they are amazing.

Ah, I see the Sykes did use the ship canal. I hope you were able to capture her arriving.
Yes, video coming soon.

sometimes the "perfect" photos are the worst ones. don't knock yourself for taking a photo that is outside of the norm.
